What to check before you buy
- One lock, one key, one worker
- Under OSHA 1910.147 each authorized employee applies their own lock, and only that employee removes it. Shared or master-keyed locks defeat the purpose.
- Devices must be durable and identifiable
- Lockout devices have to withstand the environment they are used in and must identify the worker who applied them. A padlock with no identification does not meet the standard.
- Verify the isolation
- Applying the device is not the end. The standard requires verifying that the energy has actually been isolated and dissipated before work begins.
- Stored energy counts
- Springs, hydraulic and pneumatic pressure, capacitors, elevated components and thermal energy all have to be released or restrained, not just the electrical supply.
