Acid Gas Combination Cartridge NIOSH Approved P100
Editor's take (4.6/5):

The 3M 60922 Acid Gas Respirator Cartridge is the acid gas + P100 combination: protection from chlorine, SO2, HCl and similar acid gases plus dust on one 3M bayonet cartridge. Match it to the contaminant — for acid gas with no dust the gas-only 3M 6002 is cheaper; for organic vapor too, the 60923. Browse acid gas cartridges.

3M 60922 Acid Gas Respirator Cartridge overview

The 3M 60922 Acid Gas Respirator Cartridge is a NIOSH-approved acid gas + P100 combination cartridge for 3M bayonet reusable respirators. It protects against certain acid gases — chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide and hydrogen sulfide — while a bonded P100 filter captures at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil particulate, in one housing. It carries the white (acid gas) and magenta (P100) NIOSH bands and is rated for use up to 10x the PEL on a half facepiece or 50x on a full facepiece. See our best respirator cartridge for acid gas guide and the acid gas cartridges collection.

Match the cartridge to the contaminant — ideally from an industrial-hygiene assessment. This is a combination cartridge for acid gas with particulate: if your air is acid-gas-only (no dust), the gas-only 3M 6002 covers it at lower cost; if it's particulate-only, a 3M 2091 P100 filter is the correct choice. The 60922 is rated for acid gas only — not organic-solvent vapor (use the 60921 OV/P100), and not ammonia, formaldehyde or carbon monoxide. If you face organic vapor and acid gas together, step up to the 60923 OV/AG/P100, or the broader 60926 for a wider gas mix. It mounts on a 3M full facepiece for the higher protection factor.

Safety note — a cartridge purifies air, it doesn't supply it.

The 60922 protects only against the acid gases and particulate within its NIOSH rating — it does nothing for organic vapor, ammonia, formaldehyde or carbon monoxide, and no cartridge adds oxygen. An oxygen-deficient, unknown or IDLH atmosphere requires a supplied-air respirator or SCBA chosen by a qualified professional, never an air-purifying cartridge. Some acid gases such as hydrogen sulfide have poor warning properties and are deadly, so use gas monitoring and a change-out schedule (OSHA 1910.134) rather than relying on smell, use it only on a fit-tested facepiece, and leave and change cartridges immediately if you detect odor, taste or irritation.

Where the 3M 60922 Acid Gas Respirator Cartridge fits

It's built for acid-gas exposures with particulate — water and wastewater treatment (chlorine, chlorine dioxide), chemical processing, pulp and paper, plating and metal finishing, and cleanup where acid gases occur alongside dust or mist, so you get gas and P100 protection on one cartridge. Where it's not the tool is an acid-gas-only exposure (use the cheaper 6002), a particulate-only job (use a P100 filter), an organic-vapor hazard such as solvents (use an OV cartridge), or any low-oxygen or immediately dangerous atmosphere. For matching a cartridge to a specific gas, see our chlorine cartridge guide and when do you need a respirator.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Acid gas + P100 in one cartridge — no stacking
  • Covers chlorine, HCl, SO2, ClO2, H2S
  • Oil-proof P100 (99.97%); white/magenta bands
  • Standard 3M bayonet — half and full facepieces
Keep in mind
  • Acid gas only — no organic vapor, ammonia or formaldehyde
  • Costs more than the gas-only 6002 when no dust is present
  • Not for carbon monoxide, low-oxygen or IDLH air
  • Needs a fit-tested facepiece — not a standalone respirator

Frequently asked questions

What does the 3M 60922 protect against?

Certain acid gases — chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide and hydrogen sulfide — plus particulate at P100 (99.97%) efficiency. It does not protect against organic-solvent vapor, ammonia, formaldehyde or carbon monoxide.

Does the 60922 include a particulate filter?

Yes — it has a bonded P100 particulate layer (99.97% of oil and non-oil particles), so it handles the acid gas and the dust or mist in one cartridge, with no separate filter or retainer to add.

What respirators does it fit?

It uses the 3M bayonet connection and fits 3M 6000, 7000 and FF-400 series half and full facepieces (and 3M Scott AV-3000 facepieces with the AV-632 adapter). It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS or 3M Secure Click respirators.

What's the difference between the 60922 and the 6002?

Both use the same acid-gas sorbent, but the 60922 adds a bonded P100 filter while the 6002 is gas-only and costs less. Choose the 60922 when dust or mist is present with the acid gas; choose the 6002 when the air is gas-only (add a prefilter later if particulate appears).

How is the 60922 different from the 60923?

The 60922 is acid gas + P100 only; the 60923 adds organic-vapor protection (organic vapor + acid gas + P100) on the same P100 base. Get the 60922 if acid gas is your only gas hazard; get the 60923 if you also face organic-solvent vapor.

Does it protect against organic vapor?

No — the 60922 is acid gas and particulate only. For organic-solvent vapor use the 60921 (organic vapor + P100) or the 60923 (organic vapor + acid gas + P100).

What concentration can it handle?

On a 3M half facepiece it's rated for use up to 10 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL), and up to 50 times the PEL on a full facepiece — always kept below immediately dangerous levels. Your industrial-hygiene assessment sets the actual maximum use concentration.

What is the NIOSH color code?

White over magenta — the white band indicates acid-gas protection and the magenta band indicates P100 particulate protection.

Does it protect against carbon monoxide?

No — no air-purifying cartridge stops carbon monoxide. CO exposure requires a supplied-air respirator selected under your respiratory-protection program.

Can I use it in a low-oxygen or confined space?

No — an air-purifying cartridge filters the air, it doesn't add oxygen, so it's never for a low-oxygen or immediately dangerous atmosphere. Those need a supplied-air respirator, and confined-space entry needs its full program.

When should I replace the cartridge?

Follow your employer's change-out schedule set under OSHA 1910.134 — don't rely on smell alone, since some acid gases like hydrogen sulfide have poor warning properties. Change it immediately if it's damaged, if breathing gets harder, or if you detect odor, taste or irritation; leave the area first.

Is a fit test required?

Yes — any tight-fitting respirator needs a fit test and a medical evaluation under OSHA 1910.134 before use, and the cartridge only works as part of a properly fitted facepiece. The cartridge alone is not a respirator.

Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety. Specifications reflect 3M's published data for the 60922 acid gas/P100 cartridge; it is rated for certain acid gases and particulate only — not organic vapor, ammonia, formaldehyde or carbon monoxide — and an air-purifying cartridge is never for low-oxygen or immediately dangerous air. Use it on a fit-tested facepiece under a written respiratory-protection program (OSHA 1910.134).
