Acid Gas Hydrogen Sulfide Mercury Vapor NIOSH Approved Organic Vapor
Editor's take:

The 3M 6007 Mercury Vapor Organic Vapor Acid Gas Cartridge is the right pick when mercury vapor shows up alongside organic vapor and acid gas — its mercury ESLI tells you exactly when to change out, which matters since mercury gives no odor warning. If your air also carries dust, step up to the 3M 60927, which builds in P100. Read our full 3M 6007 review, or browse the 3M respirator filters and cartridges collection.

3M 6007 Mercury Vapor Organic Vapor Acid Gas Cartridge overview

The 3M 6007 Mercury Vapor Organic Vapor Acid Gas Cartridge is a NIOSH-approved gas/vapor cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators, with a built-in mercury end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI). It adsorbs mercury vapor together with organic solvent vapor and acid gases such as chlorine, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide, and twist-locks onto 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces. Reach for the 6007 when mercury vapor is the defining hazard and organic vapor or acid gas is in the mix — the ESLI removes the guesswork from change-out timing since mercury vapor has no odor warning.

It is a gas/vapor cartridge only — it has no particulate filter. If dust or mist is also present, pair it with a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter and 501 retainer, or choose the all-in-one 3M 60927 (mercury/OV/AG + P100). If mercury isn't part of your hazard, a general multi-gas cartridge like the 3M 6006 or 3M 60926 covers organic vapor, acid gas, and ammonia instead. To confirm the right class, see the how to choose a respirator cartridge guide.

Safety note — mercury vapor is highly toxic and gives no odor warning.

Change the cartridge at the first mercury ESLI indication — do not wait for odor or symptoms, since mercury vapor doesn't reliably announce itself that way. The 6007 has no particulate filter and does not protect against ammonia, formaldehyde, or carbon monoxide, and no cartridge adds oxygen. Oxygen-deficient, unknown, or IDLH atmospheres require supplied air, SCBA, or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional — never rely on this cartridge for those conditions.

Where it fits

The 6007 is a mercury-and-multi-gas cartridge — select it once a hazard assessment confirms mercury vapor is present alongside organic vapor or acid gas, and that dust is not a concern. It suits mercury reclamation and recycling, where the ESLI tells crews exactly when to change out rather than relying on odor; chlor-alkali plants, which generate both mercury vapor and acid gases like chlorine and hydrogen sulfide; and instrument, dental, and laboratory mercury handling, where mercury vapor can release alongside solvents. If dust joins the mix, step up to the 3M 60927 for combined gas and P100 protection in one cartridge.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Built-in mercury ESLI removes change-out guesswork
  • Covers mercury, organic vapor, and acid gas in one cartridge
  • Standard 3M bayonet fit on half and full facepieces
  • Rated for chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide
Keep in mind
  • No particulate filter — needs a prefilter for dust
  • Not rated for ammonia or formaldehyde
  • For dust + mercury, the 60927 is simpler (built-in P100)
  • Bayonet-only — won't fit non-3M respirator platforms

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3M 6007 used for?

Mercury vapor protection combined with organic vapor and acid gas — mercury reclamation, chlor-alkali process work, and instrument, dental, and lab mercury handling — on 3M bayonet respirators.

How does the mercury ESLI work?

The end-of-service-life indicator is a visual marker that changes color as the mercury sorbent approaches exhaustion. Mercury vapor gives no odor warning, so change the cartridge at the ESLI indication rather than waiting to smell or feel anything.

Does the 3M 6007 have a particulate filter?

No. It's a gas/vapor cartridge only. If dust or mist is also present, add a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter with a 501 retainer, or use the 3M 60927, which has P100 built in.

Does the 3M 6007 protect against chlorine and hydrogen sulfide?

Yes. It's rated for acid gases including chlorine, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide, along with mercury vapor and organic vapor.

What respirators does the 3M 6007 fit?

3M bayonet respirators: the 6000, 6500, and 7500 half masks and the 6000 series, 7800S, and Ultimate FX FF-400 full facepieces. It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click respirators.

What's the difference between the 3M 6007 and the 60927?

Both protect against mercury vapor, organic vapor, and acid gas and carry a mercury ESLI. The 60927 adds a built-in P100 filter for dust; the 6007 is gas-only and needs a separate prefilter if particulate is present.

Can I use the 3M 6007 for ammonia?

No. It's not rated for ammonia or methylamine. For those gases, use an ammonia/methylamine cartridge such as the 3M 6004; for a broad gas mix without mercury, the 3M 6006 or 60926.

Does the 3M 6007 protect against formaldehyde or carbon monoxide?

No. It's not rated for formaldehyde or carbon monoxide. No air-purifying cartridge protects against carbon monoxide — that requires supplied-air equipment selected by a qualified safety professional.

How many 3M 6007 cartridges do I need?

3M bayonet cartridges install as a pair, one on each side of the facepiece. Confirm the exact pack quantity on the current listing before ordering, as packaging can vary.

When should I replace the 3M 6007?

Replace it at the mercury ESLI indication, on your employer's change-out schedule, or sooner if you detect acid-gas or solvent odor, breathing becomes difficult, or the cartridge is damaged.

Should I buy the 3M 6007 or the 60927?

Buy the 6007 for clean mercury-vapor environments at the lower cost. Buy the 60927 if dust or mist is also present and you want mercury, organic vapor, acid gas, and P100 protection in one cartridge.

Is mercury vapor exposure serious enough to need the ESLI feature?

Yes. Mercury vapor is highly toxic and, unlike many gases, gives no reliable odor warning before harmful exposure — the ESLI is what tells you it's time to change the cartridge, so treat it as a critical safety feature rather than a convenience.
