What does a CBRN filter rating actually mean?

Short answer: CBRN stands for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear. A genuinely CBRN-approved respirator or filter has passed a government certification program — in the U.S., NIOSH’s dedicated CBRN approval with live-agent testing; in Europe, EN 14387 gas-filter classes such as ABEK plus a P3 particulate stage. Many products marketed as “CBRN-rated” carry neither, so the label on the filter body — not the product listing — is what counts.
CBRN Filter Ratings Explained: What “CBRN-Rated” Actually Means
Search listings are full of gas masks and 40 mm canisters described as “CBRN,” “NBC,” or “mil-spec.” Some are certified to rigorous government standards; others borrow the acronym for marketing. Because these filters are bought for the worst imaginable day, the difference matters more than for any other product we cover. This reference explains the four hazard families, the two certification systems you will actually encounter, how CBRN canisters differ from the industrial filter classes we write about daily, and the honest limits of every air-purifying filter ever made.
Why this matters.
A CBRN canister is emergency equipment: it sits sealed for years and must work the first time. An uncertified look-alike fails silently — you cannot smell sarin, and you cannot test a filter at home. Certification, stamped expiry dates, and correct storage are the only assurances you get, so knowing how to read them is the entire game.
C, B, R, N: the four hazard families
The acronym replaced the older military term NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) and covers four distinct threat types:
- Chemical — toxic industrial chemicals and warfare agents: chlorine, ammonia, organophosphates, blister and nerve agents. Stopped (when stopped at all) by activated-carbon gas stages.
- Biological — bacteria, viruses, and spores. These are particles, so a high-efficiency particulate stage (P100 in the U.S., P3 in Europe) handles them; see our N95 vs P100 reference for how particulate classes compare.
- Radiological — radioactive dust and aerosols, as from a contaminated site or “dirty bomb.” The particulate stage captures the dust; nothing wearable stops penetrating gamma radiation.
- Nuclear — fallout particles after a nuclear event. Again: filters capture inhaled particles; distance, shielding, and time are the actual radiation defenses, per federal shelter guidance.
Notice the pattern: two of the four letters are handled by the particulate stage you already know from industrial work. The chemical letter is where certification programs earn their keep.
Who actually certifies a CBRN filter
In the United States, NIOSH runs a dedicated CBRN approval program created after 2001. It goes far beyond the familiar N95/P100 particulate tests: CBRN canisters are challenged against a battery of toxic industrial chemicals and validated with live chemical-warfare agents (the nerve agent GB/sarin and the blister agent HD/sulfur mustard) at a certified laboratory. Approved devices carry a NIOSH TC approval number and appear on the public certified equipment list.
Four device families can hold NIOSH CBRN approval:

The European system: EN 14387 letters and colors
Most consumer-market “CBRN” or “NBC” filters sold online — including the 40 mm NATO-thread canisters that fit most modern gas masks — are certified not by NIOSH but to the European gas-filter standard EN 14387, usually combined with an EN 143 P3 particulate stage. The rating is printed as letters and colored bands on the filter body:

EN 14387 letter classes. A filter marked ABEK-P3 combines all four gas families with the highest particulate class — the typical spec sold as an “NBC” or “CBRN” consumer filter in Europe.
A European ABEK-P3 filter is a legitimate, tested piece of equipment — but it is not the same thing as a NIOSH CBRN approval, and it has not necessarily seen live-agent testing. The 40 mm “NATO” thread (Rd40, EN 148-1) describes only how the canister screws on — a thread standard is not a protection standard.
CBRN canisters vs your industrial P100 and OV cartridges
If you already own a half-mask or full-face respirator for work, you own most of the concept: a multi-gas P100 combination cartridge is the industrial cousin of a CBRN canister — activated carbon plus high-efficiency particulate. The differences are scope and proof. An industrial multi-gas cartridge is certified against specific workplace chemicals at workplace concentrations; a NIOSH CBRN canister is certified against a much broader agent list at emergency concentrations, with live-agent validation and tighter whole-system requirements. Two hard limits apply to every air-purifying filter, CBRN or industrial:
- No carbon monoxide protection. Standard air-purifying filters do not remove CO — a critical gap in fires. That is why escape devices for smoke are engineered and certified separately.
- No oxygen. A filter only cleans the air that is there. In an oxygen-deficient space (below 19.5%), only supplied air works — the same rule OSHA applies to workplace respiratory protection.
Escape hoods vs CBRN gas masks
For most households, the realistic emergency is fire and smoke, not a chemical attack — and there is a purpose-built device class for it. Escape hoods are loose-fitting, one-size devices you can don in seconds without fit testing, over glasses and beards. A tight-fitting gas mask, by contrast, only delivers its rating with a proper face seal. That means fit testing (or at minimum a careful seal check), no beard interference, and practice. Worked example: verifying a “CBRN” claim before you buy
A listing says: “Military-grade CBRN 40mm filter — protects against all known agents.” Here is how to check that claim in five minutes:
- Find the certification marking on the filter body, not the listing. A genuine NIOSH CBRN approval prints a TC number (TC-14G-xxxx or similar) and the NIOSH name on the canister. A European filter prints EN 14387 classes (e.g., A2B2E2K2-P3) with colored bands. No marking, no certification — full stop.
- Look up the approval. NIOSH TC numbers are searchable on the NIOSH certified equipment list; if the number is absent or belongs to a different device, walk away. For EN filters, the marking itself plus a reputable manufacturer is your assurance.
- Check the expiry date and seal. CBRN and ABEK canisters ship factory-sealed with a stamped expiry (commonly 5–20 years, set by the manufacturer). An unsealed or undated canister has no defined shelf life.
- Confirm the thread and the system. A 40 mm Rd40 canister fits most modern full-face masks, but protection is certified as a system — mask plus filter. Check the mask manufacturer lists the filter (or its standard) as compatible.
- Match the device to the realistic scenario. For home fire escape, a certified escape hood beats an uncertified gas mask every time.
