Sellstrom 32155 Faceshield Flip Window Face Shield Review

Impact protection and splash protection are different tests. ANSI Z87.1 rates spectacles for impact, but only a device marked for splash (D3) is evaluated against a chemical splash hazard; safety glasses with open sides do not qualify, and a face shield is a secondary protector worn over primary eye protection rather than instead of it.

The Sellstrom 32155 is an ANSI Z87.1-compliant flip-window component for torch cutting and brazing β€” it mounts on Sellstrom DP4-series shields and is not arc-welding protection. Constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate, it provides full-face coverage from brow to below the chin β€” protecting the face, cheeks, and jaw from hazards that safety glasses and goggles cannot address alone. Polycarbonate Shade 5 IR visor for oxy/acetylene cutting and brazing (Sellstrom also lists plasma; OSHA 1910.133 requires shade 8+ for plasma arc cutting) - added protection from UV/IR rays.

Construction and Materials

The lens window is constructed from injection-molded polycarbonate, providing high impact resistance that exceeds acetate in ANSI Z87.1 high-impact testing, with strong resistance to UV-induced surface crazing. Meets ANSI Z87.1+ and CSA Z94.3 standards when assembled with Sellstrom DP4 series face shields. The lens window extends coverage across the full frontal face profile with side geometry providing lateral protection. Construction meets or exceeds ANSI Z87.1 high-velocity impact requirements.

Compliance and Ratings

Rated to ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA 1910.133 for eye and face protection in welding and thermal cutting operations. ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 governs occupational eye and face protective devices; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 mandates its use in workplaces with documented eye and face hazards. Additional ANSI Z49.1 compliance is required for welding; the lens shade must match the welding process and amperage per that standard. Measures 9.25" width by 4.375" height by 0.070" thick.

Performance

In welding environments, the shield protects against optical radiation, spatter, and slag. Confirm the shade number matches ANSI Z49.1 requirements for the specific welding process and amperage in use. Gloves, Eyewear, Ear Protection, Masks & Clothing. Maintaining lens cleanliness and replacing lenses when scratched preserves visibility quality for precision work.

Strengths

  • Polycarbonate lens provides ANSI Z87.1-rated impact protection for welding applications
  • Optical-grade lens maintains clarity without distortion at working distances
  • Compatible with standard face shield headgear assemblies
  • Adjustable headgear fits most adult head sizes
  • Full-face coverage from brow to chin protects areas beyond eyewear reach
  • Full-face coverage from brow to chin provides protection not achievable with safety glasses alone

Limitations

  • Face shields do not seal the eye surround β€” safety glasses or welding helmets must be worn underneath in chemical splash and grinding environments per OSHA 1910.133
  • Lens scratching from abrasive contact degrades clarity over time; replacement lenses should be sourced when transmission quality decreases
  • One-size-fits-most headgear may not accommodate all head sizes or hard hat platforms; verify compatibility before crew-scale procurement

Recommended Use Cases

MIG, TIG, stick, and flux-core welding; torch cutting and brazing; plasma cutting; foundry operations with molten metal splash. Appropriate for any OSHA-regulated workplace where face and eye hazard assessments document a risk requiring face shield-level protection.

Verdict

The Sellstrom 32155 face shield delivers ANSI Z87.1-compliant protection for welding applications in a polycarbonate construction suited for industrial environments. Buyers should verify headgear compatibility and application requirements before crew-scale procurement. What to check before you buy

A face shield is secondary protection
ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 treats face shields as secondary protectors. They are worn over primary eye protection - safety glasses or goggles - not instead of it.
Marking tells you the rating
Look for the Z87 marking, and Z87+ for high impact. Additional letters cover splash and droplet (D3), dust (D4) and fine dust (D5).
Window material and coating
Polycarbonate handles impact; acetate resists chemical splash better. Anti-fog coatings matter more than most buyers expect in humid or hot work.
Headgear and crown adapters
Shields mount to a ratchet headgear or to a hard hat via slot adapters. Adapter compatibility is not universal across hard hat brands.

Fits 3M 90028-80025 Face shield with some ingenuity
I was looking for a face shield I could use for grinding and plasma cutting. Face shields with a fold down #5 shield were $40 and up. I bought the 3M face shield (part 90028-80025) for $11 and this #5 shield for $13. I drilled 2 holes in the upper portion of the shield and it screwed and fit right on like it belonged there! $24 total for a nice shield for grinding and plasma!

Great accessory. The IR5 rating is dead on.
I bought as a spare. They work great with the clear shield. Wish they had an ir3. A ir5 and ir8 are available. They hold up well. Hard to scratch.

Good product.
These are great. They don’t last as long as I would like. They tend to catch a lot of slag from grinding. I leave it shut to make it last longer. I will buy many more.
