Why the 3M 6885 is a replacement window, not a whole shield

A face-shield program runs on fresh windows: the visor scratches and hazes long before the headgear wears out, so keeping spare windows on hand keeps the shield protective. The 6885 is that consumable — a hard-coated optical-grade clear window with coverage of the respirator lens area and side flanges for lateral protection, meeting no impact rating of its own (the respirator lens provides the protection) for general industry. It mounts to compatible 3M face-shield headgear, which is sold separately. As face shields go, this is the replacement-window pick, and the best face shields guide and the glasses vs face shields guide explain how it layers with primary eyewear. It keeps a shield in service with a fresh window.

Safety first: a face shield is secondary protection — it must be worn over primary safety glasses or goggles, not instead of them. A chemical splash hazard also needs sealed D3 goggles under the shield to seal the eyes. This is a peel-off lens cover only: it adheres to the lens of a 6000 Series full facepiece respirator and is peeled away when it clouds the listing. Retire the window when it is scratched enough to impair vision.

What the 3M 6885 listing documents

From the published specs: a clear peel-off lens cover for 3M 6000 Series full facepieces; a soft film that takes scratches, chips and overspray off the respirator lens; no impact rating of its own; and a design that adheres to the 6000 Series facepiece lens. Note the listing markets it with face shield wording; 3M classifies the 6885 as a peel-off lens cover, not a face shield. Confirm the Z87 marking and headgear on the listing.

How the 3M 6885 compares to other face and eye protection

For a polycarbonate chemical-splash window, the 3M WP96C; for a clear chemical window, the 3M WCP96; for a complete shield with headgear included, the 3M 8270 Deluxe; for a full-face shield with headgear, the Uvex Bionic; and for the goggle you wear under it, the Uvex Astrospec. The eye protection buyer's guide covers the range.

Choosing the right window and eye protection

Match the window, headgear, and primary eyewear to the hazard. Browse the eye protection and safety goggles collections; for the standard, the ANSI Z87.1 guide; and for shield selection, the grinding and cutting shields guide and the best eye protection guide.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The 6885 suits general manufacturing, maintenance, and assembly programs that already run 3M face-shield headgear and need fresh replacement windows — see the manufacturing eyewear guide and the mechanics eyewear guide. Pair the window with the safety glasses or goggles it supplements, and keep the anti-fog eyewear underneath clear — see the anti-fog eyewear collection and the anti-fog guide. Confirm the headgear compatibility and Z87 marking on the listing, and retire the window when it is scratched. Frequently asked questions

What is the 3M 6885?

A clear peel-off lens cover for the 3M 6000 Series full facepiece respirator, protecting the respirator lens from scratches, chips and overspray. It is not a face shield and has no impact rating of its own. Used in general manufacturing and maintenance. It fits over the lens of a 6000 Series full facepiece respirator.

Does it come with headgear?

No - the 6885 is the visor window only. It is designed for use with compatible face-shield headgear assemblies, which are sold separately. Confirm the headgear compatibility on the listing before ordering.

Is a face shield primary eye protection?

No - a face shield is secondary protection worn over primary safety glasses or goggles, not instead of them. It adds face, cheek, and jaw coverage that eyewear alone cannot provide.

What impact rating does it carry?

The listing states it meets no impact rating of its own (the respirator lens provides the protection) requirements for general industrial use, rated to ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA 1910.133 for impact and particle hazards. Confirm the exact Z87 marking on the listing.

Is it rated for chemical splash?

The 6885 is described for general impact and particle hazards. For a chemical splash hazard, use a splash-rated shield and wear sealed D3 splash goggles under it; confirm the ratings on the listing.

What is it made of?

The listing states a hard-coated optical-grade lens window providing impact resistance and surface durability; confirm the exact material on the listing.

What does it cover?

Full frontal face coverage from brow to below the chin, with side flanges or curved geometry providing lateral protection beyond the direct forward field.

Which headgear does it fit?

It is designed for compatible 3M face-shield headgear assemblies; confirm the specific crown and bracket compatibility on the listing before ordering the visor.

Can I wear it over prescription glasses?

Yes - as a face shield it is worn over your glasses or goggles; confirm the headgear clearance on the listing.

How do I care for it?

Clean the window with lens-safe wipes, avoid abrasive cloths, and retire the visor when it is scratched enough to impair vision or a component is damaged, since a worn shield no longer protects as intended.

When should I replace the window?

Replace the visor window when it is scratched, cracked, or hazed enough to impair vision, or when the coating degrades - keeping fresh windows on the headgear maintains protection.

Authentic 3M part, 25 pieces as advertised
I ordered this item twice from the seller. Each time, it arrived in a sealed package of 25 pieces with a 3M instructional pamphlet. This is a good value for an authentic 3M product. Thank you.

These are a must have
If you are looking to lengthen the life of your respirator faceplate then these are a must! The Adhesive is only on each end which makes it's very easy to remove and swap out. Yeah but adhesive being on the only end unfortunately makes it so small. Concrete particles can get in there but that is a minor issue and not worth docking a star. I know they also make these tinted so you can use your respirator outside in the sun more comfortably. I shopped around as well and this was definitely the best price I found and great value for as many that you get.

Great Idea! Good product
This is a GREAT idea, I have gone through several masks because they get scratched up. I use them mostly out on the farm while chipping wood, cutting grass, using the chainsaw.. so much rougher use than a guy in a paint spray booth. I wish there was more adhesive on the edges to hold the unit in place. But it works and protects the new full face respirator.

Clear & Covered
Fits my 3M face shield and keeps my shield protected. Does not distort vision. Just as clear as the face shield.

can use for goggles
I paint and do body work for a living and the clear covers are great for keeping overspray and grinding sparks from ruining the clear lens on my face mask. I also cut them down for use on my goggles, work well with them also. Just be careful not to cut off the adhesion when usingon goggles
