EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.3/5WC Safety Review β€” SAS EP6 Medium Corded Earplugs

Best For: corded single-use foam hearing protection at NRR 24 dB with a retention cord.

Not For: non-noise hazards, or noise that earplugs alone can't bring under ~85 dBA (add earmuffs).

Bottom Line: a solid corded single-use foam plug at NRR 24 dB β€” the cord earns its keep on jobs where dropped plugs get lost.

SAS EP6 Medium Corded Earplugs Overview

The SAS EP6 Medium Corded Earplugs are corded single-use foam ear plugs from SAS, rated NRR 24 dB. The permanent cord keeps the pair together so a plug isn’t lost, and lets you hang them around your neck between tasks. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The SAS EP6 Medium belong to the corded ear plugs range. They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy); for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 24 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 24 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~87 dBA after derating Add earmuffs
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~92 dBA after derating Add earmuffs
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~82 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the SAS EP6 Medium?

Buy them if you want single-use foam hearing protection with a retention cord at NRR 24 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare EP6 Large, 6101-B, Whisper+. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The SAS EP6 Medium reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Helpful Hearing-Protection Guides

SAS EP6 Medium Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the SAS EP6 Medium?

The SAS EP6 Medium are rated NRR 24 dB (EPA-labeled per ANSI S3.19). Real-world protection is usually lower, so NIOSH recommends derating the NRR when estimating exposure.

Are the SAS EP6 Medium corded?

Yes. The permanent cord links the pair so you don't lose a plug, and lets you wear them around your neck between tasks β€” the cord does not change the NRR.

Are the SAS EP6 Medium reusable or single-use?

They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy).

How do I insert the SAS EP6 Medium?

To fit them, roll them down between your fingers, pull the ear up and back, and insert β€” they expand to seal the canal. A proper seal is what delivers the rated protection.

Can I wash the SAS EP6 Medium?

They are single-use foam β€” replace rather than wash once soiled or no longer expanding.

Are the SAS EP6 Medium metal-detectable?

No. For food or pharma lines where a lost plug must be detectable, see our metal-detectable ear plugs.

What size are the SAS EP6 Medium?

They are one size fits most.

What noise levels suit NRR 24?

NRR 24 dB suits common industrial noise once derated; for very high or impulse noise, add earmuffs for dual protection. See what NRR means.

Do corded ear plugs reduce the NRR vs uncorded?

No. The cord is only for retention; the plug body and seal determine attenuation.

Are the SAS EP6 Medium NIOSH/EPA labeled?

Yes β€” NRR 24 dB is EPA-labeled under ANSI S3.19. WC Safety sells authentic SAS hearing protection through legitimate channels.

Can I buy the SAS EP6 Medium in bulk or by the case?

Yes. Use the Request a Quote option for case and dispenser pricing on volume orders.

Should I choose ear plugs or ear muffs?

Plugs suit tight spaces, heat and all-day wear; muffs are faster on/off. Many high-noise jobs use both β€” see ear plugs vs ear muffs.

Great Ear Plugs
Use them in residential construction and they work great. They really reduce loud noise even with the caps off and I can still talk and understand others because they don't muffle voices too much. I have rarely used them with the caps in but when I do I have to take them out of my ear to take them out or put them in because its every loud if you do it when its in your ear. Also very confortable and easy to put in and take out.Very stable in your ear, you could ride a roller coaster and they would stay in.(Every ear is different though)I have had them for a few months now and it seems like they will last a long time.

Great for LEO EDC
I purchased this set of ear-plugs as a replacement for the Surefire EP4 Sonic Defender Ear Protection (see my review of them too) because the EP6 come with a more robust case. I carry these in a small pocket on the outside of my cargo pocket of my work pants where the case can get bumped or pressed by surfaces on the interior of a vehicle or other confined seating areas. The case shows no deformation, dimpling or crushing after months of carrying it around during work. I also used them by themselves in a small 7 lane, 25 yard indoor shooting range with other shooters to maximize the sound of gunfire to test them out. In such a confined area, I did notice some pain in my ears when shooting, however, I also noted there was no ringing in my ears afterward, and I could easily hear the conversation and verbal comments of those I was shooting with during our time on the range. I purchased these for work to carry with me at all times to secure my hearing when unexpectedly facing a rapidly changing and dynamic tactical environment wherein pistol or rifle fire may erupt without warning. They're designed to protect your hearing from loud noise while allowing normal sound such as speech to be heard. Having these with me ensures I don't "go deaf" when trying to communicate with others who are also operating in the tactical environment.

Feel great
Use these earplugs all the time when I shoot or when I'm training people to shoot. I even used them in my last completion where I took 1st overall. I like these because they are comfortable, they block out the other competitors gun fire, and I don't hear myself breathing when I wear them. With that being said I've seen some decline in my hearing, which is fairly normal for my occupation. However the hearing specialist isn't sold on these types of ear pro, especially not the SureFire version of these which I have also used. Just be causios or double up with muffs.

Awesome product.
So far I have worn these at the range and at work. When shooting these realy impressed me at how well they worked for the size.At my job we use A LOT of compressed air and they work great without my co workers having to yell for me to hear them. I can even hear the radio with them on. I have yet to close the little plug as it was not needed.I had no discomfort after leaving them in for hours on end unlike the expandable ones I'm used to.

Love these at the gun range!
I was skeptical about these since my ear canals are somewhat small and they only have these in medium. They are made of a really nice material that squishes and actually fits very comfortably. I love the extra plug that I can put in when I'm on the rifle range. Otherwise I keep them open and they protect my ears better than those giant muff things I used to use(and they don't hurt my ears at all like those giant things). I have no problem hearing others speak, and can comfortably wear them a minimum of 5 hours (that's the most I've worn them so far). I'm going to buy extra of these - feels like I'm wearing nothing at all they are so comfy!

One ear great
This product appears to be relatively sensitive to ear size. Apparently I fall into two different ranges because the product works absolutely great in one ear, but not so much in the other.

Very comfortable!!
These were surprisingly very comfortable and could wear them for hours. Also pleased to find that I could wear my ear muffs over them giving added protection while shooting indoors. They come in a little carry case and are well made. Great product and won't disappoint.

Fits well enough. Sound reduction is not that great, though
Used this at an outdoor shooting range with overhead cover. Although not as loud an environment as an indoor range, The sound reduction of these units are akin to sticking 9mm bullets in your ears (come on, I know you guys have done that before). In other words, something like .223 is JUST below the painful thresh hold for sound. This was with the ports open. Little difference with the ports closed.

better than expected
Much better than I expected.I avoid muff style hearing protection in general and have carried a set of foamies in a case in my pocket for a long time. I make random near daily range trips and have a metal shop, so I'm always needing a set.I tried out 3 different types of ear plugs recently and these are by far the best. Very comfortable shooting .223 with a muzzle brake under a tin roof, nice ont he pistol range, very effective in the shop. And very comfortable feeling once you get used to putting them in.
