Malta Dynamics APEX Type 2 Class E Safety Helmet Overview

The Malta Dynamics APEX Type 2 Class E Safety Helmet (HHW3004) is a non-vented, full-brim helmet rated ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 2 for top and lateral impact and Class E for electrical work, with its shell proof-tested to 20,000 volts.

As the Malta Dynamics HHW3004, this Type 2 Class E safety helmet is a non-vented safety helmet built as a full brim safety helmet electrical crews can wear on the line β€” a true 20kV safety helmet.

It uses a lightweight ABS shell, a comfort ratchet suspension for head sizes 6.5 to 8, and a removable 4-point chin strap. Because Class E needs a solid shell, it is non-vented; the airflow version is the vented APEX (Class C). Learn the ratings in hard hat classes explained and Class E vs Class G.

Who It Is For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Electrical & utility work Purpose-built Class E, 20kV proof-test.
Falling & lateral impact Purpose-built Type 2: top plus side, front, back.
Sun & rain exposure Strong Full brim gives 360Β° coverage.
Hot, non-electrical work Choose vented Pick the vented Class C APEX.
Built-in eye protection Add a shield This SKU has no integrated visor.

A safety helmet protects your head, but it does not keep you from falling. Any time you work at height above the trigger set by OSHA 1926.501, head protection has to be paired with a personal fall arrest system β€” an anchor, a full-body harness, and a connecting device β€” not treated as a substitute for one. On the electrical side, Class E means the shell is proof-tested to 20,000 volts, but that is a supplementary test, not authorization to work energized: crews still de-energize, verify absence of voltage, and follow NFPA 70E and their own electrical safety program. Class E also gives no protection if the helmet is drilled, has stickers over the shell, or is paired with non-rated accessories, so keep it intact. Fit matters too: use the ratchet and the 4-point chin strap so the helmet stays put during a side impact or a climb. See Type I vs Type II and helmets vs bump caps to match the helmet to your hazard.

Pros & Cons

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Type 2 mean on this helmet?

ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type 2 means the helmet is tested for both top and lateral impact, so it helps protect against blows to the front, back, and sides as well as the crown. Type 1 is tested for top impact only. This APEX is a verified Type 2.

What does Class E mean?

Class E (Electrical) means the shell is proof-tested to 20,000 volts to reduce the hazard from contact with electrical conductors. It is one of three ANSI electrical classes: Class E (20kV), Class G (2,200V), and Class C (conductive, no electrical protection).

Is this helmet vented?

No, it is non-vented. Electrical Class E requires a solid shell with no vent holes, so a Class E helmet cannot be vented. If you want airflow and do not need electrical protection, choose the vented APEX, which is Class C.

Does Class E mean I can work on live circuits?

No. Class E is a supplementary proof-test, not authorization for live work. You still de-energize, verify absence of voltage, and follow NFPA 70E and your electrical safety program. The helmet is one layer, not a substitute for safe work practices.

What is the difference between this and the vented APEX?

This HHW3004 is non-vented and Class E (20kV electrical). The vented APEX has airflow vents and is Class C, which offers no electrical protection. Choose Class E for electrical or utility work and the vented Class C for hot, non-electrical environments.

Does it have a face shield?

No. This is the full-brim helmet without an integrated visor. If you need built-in eye and face protection, look at the APEX with a flip visor, and remember that an impact visor is not a sealed chemical-splash goggle.

What size heads does it fit?

The comfort ratchet suspension adjusts to fit head sizes roughly 6.5 to 8. Turn the rear ratchet to tune the fit, and use the 4-point chin strap to keep the helmet stable during climbing and overhead work.

Does it come with a chin strap?

Yes. It includes an adjustable, removable 4-point chin strap, which helps keep a Type 2 helmet in place during a side impact, a slip, or work at height. Many jobsites require a chin strap for climbing and elevated work.

Is it a full-brim or cap-style helmet?

This is the full-brim version, which gives a 360-degree brim for added shade from sun and runoff from rain. The brim does not change the impact rating; the helmet is Type 2 either way.

What standards does it meet?

It is rated ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 2, Class E, and it also references EN 12492 and OSHA 1910 and 1926. Confirm the current markings on the helmet and shell label against your site and regulatory requirements.

When should I replace a safety helmet?

Replace it after any significant impact, when the shell or suspension shows cracks, dents, or UV chalking, or per the manufacturer's service life. A helmet that has taken a hit may not protect you again, even if it looks intact.

Is a safety helmet the same as a hard hat?

A safety helmet like this adds a chin strap and Type 2 lateral protection, closer to a climbing helmet, while a traditional hard hat is often Type 1. Both must meet Z89.1, but a Type 2 helmet is designed for a wider range of impacts.

comfy but head band pops lose often.
Nice and comfy, BUT the ratchet "high / low" pins let go when you tighten the ratchet to fit your head. They popped free also taking the helmet off. I will have to figure out a better way to keep it in place.

Don't be an egghead
Forced to buy one of these new-fangled chin strap hard hats. I really didn't want the eggshell looking one that home depot sells from the red company. Glad this one exists, the brim isn't as nice as my old Honeywell, but I'll take what I can get. It sits a bit high on the head and the suspension isn't as nice either, but it'll do the job and keep me on the job.
