Malta Dynamics Type 2 Safety Helmet with Visor Overview

The Malta Dynamics Type 2 Safety Helmet with Visor (HTW2002, from the APEX line) is a vented climbing-style safety helmet that meets ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 2 and Class C, plus EN 12492, with top, side, front, and back impact protection. Its integrated flip visor is rated to ANSI Z87.1-2015 for impact.

As the Malta Dynamics HTW2002, this Malta Dynamics APEX safety helmet is a Type 2 safety helmet with visor. It is a vented Type 2 Class C helmet and a safety helmet with integrated face shield for construction and industry.

The visor comes clear or tinted (tinted is 99% UV-resistant) with anti-fog, and the helmet has a lightweight ABS shell and a 4-point chin strap. Because it is vented, it is Class C with no electrical protection β€” covered below. Compare it with the JSP EVO VISTAshield and the Milwaukee BOLT, understand the ratings in hard hat classes explained, and browse the range in safety helmets.

Who This Helmet Is For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Head plus eye/face impact Purpose-built Integrated Z87.1 flip visor.
Lateral (side) impact hazards Strong ANSI Type 2 top and side.
Hot conditions, breathability Strong Sliding adjustable vents.
Electrical or arc-flash hazards Not suitable Vented Class C; use a Class E.
Chemical-splash eye hazard Add goggles Visor is impact-rated, not sealed.

Know what each rating covers. The integrated visor is an ANSI Z87.1-2015 impact-rated shield β€” it guards against flying particles and impact, and the tint helps with glare and UV, but it is not a sealed goggle and does not protect against a chemical splash hazard; where liquids can splash the eyes, add indirect-vented splash goggles. The helmet is Type 2, rated for top and side impact, and because it is vented it is Class C with no electrical protection, so choose a non-vented Class E helmet for energized work. A helmet also protects your head, not your body: working at height still requires separate fall-arrest equipment with a rated harness and anchor, no matter how secure the chin strap. Confirm the ratings marked on the shell and visor against your hazard, and inspect both before each use. Learn more in Type I vs Type II and OSHA 1910.133 eye and face protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ANSI rating does the Malta Dynamics Type 2 helmet have?

The helmet meets ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 2 and Class C, plus EN 12492, so it is tested for top and side impact. The integrated visor meets ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2015 for impact eye and face protection. Confirm the markings match your task.

What is the integrated visor for?

It is a flip-down face shield rated to ANSI Z87.1-2015 that guards the eyes and face against flying particles and impact, available clear or tinted with an anti-fog finish; tinted shields are 99% UV-resistant. Deploy it for eye and face hazards and flip it up when not needed.

Does the visor protect against a chemical splash?

No. The visor is impact-rated (Z87.1), not a sealed chemical-splash goggle, and the tint is for glare and UV, not for welding. Where liquids or chemical splash are a hazard, use indirect-vented splash goggles in addition to the helmet.

Is it vented, and can I use it for electrical work?

It has sliding adjustable vents for airflow, which makes it Class C with no electrical protection. Do not use it near energized electrical hazards; for electrical work choose a non-vented Class E helmet and follow your electrical-safety rules.

Is it Type 1 or Type 2?

It is ANSI Type 2, which adds side impact protection to the top-impact protection of a Type 1 helmet. That suits work where lateral impact, such as from a slip or a swinging object, is a concern.

Does it have a chin strap?

Yes. It has an adjustable, removable 4-point chin strap, which helps keep the helmet on during a slip or at height. A retained helmet is a key reason to choose a Type 2 safety helmet over a basic hard hat.

How does it adjust?

It uses a 6-point suspension with a comfort ratchet so you can dial the fit with one hand, plus the adjustable chin strap. Set it so the helmet sits level and snug, and re-check the fit after adding the visor or accessories.

What is the shell made of?

The shell is lightweight ABS, chosen for impact strength. Inspect it for cracks or dents and replace the helmet after any significant impact, since a damaged shell no longer protects to its rating.

Can I replace or swap the visor?

Malta Dynamics offers clear and tinted visors for the helmet, so you can fit the shield to your task and replace it if it is scratched or hazed. Confirm the replacement visor matches this helmet model before ordering.

Does the chin strap make it fall protection?

No. The chin strap keeps the helmet on, but a helmet is head protection, not fall protection. Working at height still requires separate fall-arrest equipment with a harness, connector, and rated anchor.

Is it good for construction and industrial work?

Yes. Malta Dynamics markets it as OSHA 1910 and 1926 compliant for construction and industrial environments, with Type 2 impact protection and an integrated visor. Confirm it meets the specific standards your site requires.

When should I replace it?

Replace the helmet after any significant impact, when the shell shows cracks or dents, or per Malta Dynamics' service-life guidance, and replace the visor when it is scratched or hazed. Inspect the shell, suspension, and visor before each use.

Way more durable than you’d expect.
I work at heights in the telecom industry, so I wear this 10+ hours a day 5-6 days a week, and have been for about 3 months. The helmet’s main selling point is its durability. It has been bumped and scraped countless times and taken impact from a (less than 1/2lb object) falling about 75 feet. This helmet was also dropped 350ft onto a steel walkway and you can’t even tell. The downsides to this helmet are comfortability. While it doesn’t have that headache effect some of the cheaper helmets do, it tends to sit as odd angles on the head and is difficult to adjust in a way that makes it sit well, which is not only affecting comfortability but safety as well. This hard hat also sits very high on the head, making it very prone to falling off your head if you don’t have the chin straps clipped snugly. This helmet would also be a no-go for those with smaller or medium heads. I usually go for larger sizes and the tightest adjustment on the headgear is just barely tight enough. It is however very light and causes no strain to the neck even after wearing it for many consecutive hours. If you want to try a climbing style hard hat before springing for the more expensive kask or petzl options this is definitely worth the price and is tough enough to take very heavy abuse.

Visor fell off
The hat is good, however after two weeks of use the visor came loose and a screw fell off on the trail. I don't see an easy option for replacement. The visor is not strictly necessary for me but it is useful.
