EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.5/5WC Safety Review — Mack's Ear Seals Corded Earplugs

Best For: corded single-use foam hearing protection at NRR 26 dB with a retention cord.

Not For: non-noise hazards, or noise that earplugs alone can't bring under ~85 dBA (add earmuffs).

Bottom Line: a solid corded single-use foam plug at NRR 26 dB — the cord earns its keep on jobs where dropped plugs get lost.

Mack's Ear Seals Corded Earplugs Overview

The Mack's Ear Seals Corded Earplugs are corded single-use foam ear plugs from Mack's, rated NRR 26 dB. The permanent cord keeps the pair together so a plug isn’t lost, and lets you hang them around your neck between tasks. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The Mack's Ear Seals belong to the corded ear plugs range. They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy); for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 26 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 26 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~85 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~90 dBA after derating Add earmuffs
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~80 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the Mack's Ear Seals?

Buy them if you want single-use foam hearing protection with a retention cord at NRR 26 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare Gel, Reusable, CEP001-R. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise — or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA — wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The Mack's Ear Seals reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Industrial & construction noise

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a corded NRR 26 plug you won’t lose between tasks.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

Pros & Cons

Helpful Hearing-Protection Guides

Mack's Ear Seals Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the Mack's Ear Seals?

The Mack's Ear Seals are rated NRR 26 dB (EPA-labeled per ANSI S3.19). Real-world protection is usually lower, so NIOSH recommends derating the NRR when estimating exposure.

Are the Mack's Ear Seals corded?

Yes. The permanent cord links the pair so you don't lose a plug, and lets you wear them around your neck between tasks — the cord does not change the NRR.

Are the Mack's Ear Seals reusable or single-use?

They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy).

How do I insert the Mack's Ear Seals?

To fit them, roll them down between your fingers, pull the ear up and back, and insert — they expand to seal the canal. A proper seal is what delivers the rated protection.

Can I wash the Mack's Ear Seals?

They are single-use foam — replace rather than wash once soiled or no longer expanding.

Are the Mack's Ear Seals metal-detectable?

No. For food or pharma lines where a lost plug must be detectable, see our metal-detectable ear plugs.

What size are the Mack's Ear Seals?

They are one size fits most.

What noise levels suit NRR 26?

NRR 26 dB suits common industrial noise once derated; for very high or impulse noise, add earmuffs for dual protection. See what NRR means.

Do corded ear plugs reduce the NRR vs uncorded?

No. The cord is only for retention; the plug body and seal determine attenuation.

Are the Mack's Ear Seals NIOSH/EPA labeled?

Yes — NRR 26 dB is EPA-labeled under ANSI S3.19. WC Safety sells authentic Mack's hearing protection through legitimate channels.

Can I buy the Mack's Ear Seals in bulk or by the case?

Yes. Use the Request a Quote option for case and dispenser pricing on volume orders.

Should I choose ear plugs or ear muffs?

Plugs suit tight spaces, heat and all-day wear; muffs are faster on/off. Many high-noise jobs use both — see ear plugs vs ear muffs.

They work very well
These may not be the most comfortable (that would be the foam type) but boy do they work! I use them mostly when pressure washing and even after hours there is no ringing or other issues with my ears. Any discomfort is temporary as once I get to work I totally forget about them. Also, the string is nice for when you need to remove them temporarily, say to talk with someone. They just hand around your neck until you’re ready to start again. Much nicer than having two loose earplugs. Two tips: wet them before inserting, and remove them slowly else you may get an uncomfortable pop when the pressure changes.

Best bang for my buck of any product this year
I’m very sound-sensitive (a good thing because I do a lot of music analysis). During the pandemic I’ve been “stuck” in an environment that’s not ideal. There is much noise throughout the day that would normally interfere with my work and enjoyment of life. I wear these earplugs around my neck all day so I can insert them the moment an intrusive noise begins. I put them in to start any work project requiring deep concentration (except to analyze music or listen to a video or audiobook.)One has to learn how to insert them properly so that they are effective and comfortable. At the beginning I had a few scary and painful moments of creating suction in my ear canal. The printed instructions that come with them are helpful. I also found that if I also focus on aiming one plug in the direction of the opposite ear as I insert it, then it will enter at the right angle. These inexpensive little plastic plugs with the cord connecting them are of very good quality. The cord comes out easily but not accidentally. Every part has retained its shape for over a year. I occasionally throw them into the basin when I hand wash a garment. Even the little rectangular plastic case is of good quality and is still like new. I keep the earplugs in the case when I’m not using them so they don’t get lost or the cord tangled.A few years ago I bought industrial earmuffs to do the same job. I spent about $35 for them. They squeezed my head - so uncomfortable and cumbersome to travel with. These little things do at least as well and are so convenient at less than 1/10 the price.

Good for water and noise reduction
I've worn these both in the pool and while shooting and they do a good job of keeping the noise out. Good for power tools as well (just keep the string way out of the way or cut it off).

Great product for noise reduction not noise cancellation
This is my second time ordering these air plugs... and obviously that means they are doing something right! I suffer with migraines so quite often I need something to reduce the noise. These air plugs however do not cancel the noise (my headphones do a better job at that) but rather they simply reduce the noise which works for me. But if you’re looking for noise cancellation this one may not be the best air plugs for you.

Non-Negotiable!!!
These are amazing! I use them in the pool at the gym and I can't hear any of the annoying blasting music I would be subjected to. Thanks to these, I can concentrate on my laps. Lightweight, fast drying, perfect.

Oh so comfortable
These are the best for overall comfort and enough sound reduction. Many ear canals are oddly shaped, and these plugs have soft ridges that can go where they need to go. They caution you to remove them gently and with a twist, so you don't "pop" them out. The stem is firm enough to insert and remove easily. The sound reduction of pretty good, though not complete, which is actually safer for most tasks. I use them for mowing, weed whacking and chain saw work, and almost forget they are in. Many other types are either too stiff, and become uncomfortable, or too soft and do not block enough sound. Love these!

Great for blocking out annoying neighbors
OMG I don't know what I would do without these. I am suuuuper sensitive to sounds, which is a pain since I work in an open office space and I have stompy upstairs neighbors. I used to use the little foam earplugs but they are hard to position correctly and are not good for putting in and out multiple times when folks come by to chat. So I tried these and they do a great job keeping out sound. I dont have to worry about positioning them just right anymore as they go in the same every time, and they are easy to clean and last a long time. I now have multiple pairs stashed at work and at home, to help block out all the eating noises, random phone conversations, etc., and get some work of my own done. I hope they make these for a while!
