Honeywell North 7506R95 β R95 Oil-Resistant Snap-On Prefilter for North Gas Cartridges, NIOSH 42 CFR 84
The Honeywell North 7506R95 is a NIOSH 42 CFR 84 R95 oil-resistant snap-on prefilter that attaches to Honeywell North N-series and 75SCL gas-only cartridges β adding 95% particle filtration efficiency with oil resistance for metalworking, coolant mist, and other oil aerosol environments. The R95 class is required when oil-based aerosols are present β the 7506N95 (N95) is not rated for oil and degrades in oil mist environments. For higher efficiency in oil environments, see the 7504R95 R95 in the North cartridge holder format. For dry dust only (no oil), the 7506N95 is more economical. Compatible with all North N-series gas cartridges.
- Model: Honeywell North 7506R95
- Type: R95 Oil-Resistant Snap-On Prefilter
- NIOSH Approval: 42 CFR 84 R95 β 95% filtration efficiency, oil-resistant
- Oil Resistance: R (oil-resistant) β rated for oil aerosols up to 8 hours per NIOSH
- Attachment: Snaps onto North N-series gas cartridges (N75001L, N75002L, N75003L, N75004L, 75SCL)
- Oil-free alternative: 7506N95 (N95) β use only in dry environments
- APF: Determined by facepiece β APF 10 (half-mask), APF 50 (full-face)
Key Features
- R95 oil-resistant filter media: Designed for oil aerosol environments β R-class filter media maintains β₯95% particle efficiency in the presence of oil-based aerosols for up to 8 hours of use time per NIOSH testing
- Required for oil mist environments: N95 filters lose efficiency when exposed to oil aerosols. Any operation involving cutting fluids, metalworking coolants, lubricant mist, or other oil-based aerosols requires at minimum an R95 or P-class filter
- Snap-on convenience: Attaches to North N-series gas cartridges without removing the cartridge from the facepiece β adds oil-resistant particle protection to an existing gas cartridge configuration
- Economical oil mist upgrade: More cost-effective than replacing gas cartridges with P100 combination cartridges when only an oil-resistant particle layer is needed and gas sorbent life remains
Applications β When to Use the 7506R95
The 7506R95 is the correct prefilter whenever oil aerosols are present alongside gas cartridge users:
- Metalworking with coolant mist: CNC machining, grinding, and turning operations using water-soluble or oil-based cutting fluids that generate aerosol mist co-located with gas exposure from coolant additives or other chemicals
- Industrial maintenance with lubricant aerosol: Maintenance operations in areas with oil mist from rotating equipment combined with gas cartridge requirements from chemical processes in the same space
- Welding with oil-based anti-spatter: Operations using oil-based anti-spatter compounds that generate aerosol alongside welding fume β R95 covers the oil aerosol; the gas cartridge covers any gas co-exposure
- Fluid handling and pump maintenance: Operations involving hydraulic oil aerosol, lubricating oil mist, or other petroleum-based aerosols in environments that also require gas cartridge protection
Compatible Gas Cartridges (Snap-On)
The 7506-series prefilters snap directly onto Honeywell North N-series and 75SCL gas-only cartridges already installed on the respirator facepiece. They do not attach directly to P100 combination cartridges (7581P100L, 7583P100L, etc.) β those already contain integrated P100 filtration.

OSHA Compliance
- NIOSH approval required: All filters and cartridges in OSHA-mandated programs must be NIOSH approved under 42 CFR Part 84
- Hazard assessment required: OSHA 1910.134(d)(1) β filter/cartridge type must match the documented workplace hazard class
- Fit testing required: OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) β annual fit testing for any tight-fitting facepiece before operational use
- Filter replacement schedule: P-class and N/R-class filters are replaced when breathing resistance increases or visible contamination occurs β not on a fixed time schedule
- Medical evaluation prerequisite: OSHA 1910.134(e) β required before fit testing and before operational respirator use
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 7506R95 and 7506N95?
The 7506N95 is N (not oil-resistant) β it is not rated for oil aerosols and loses efficiency when exposed to oil. The 7506R95 is R (oil-resistant) β it maintains 95% efficiency in oil aerosol environments for up to 8 hours. Use 7506R95 any time oil-based aerosols are present.
Which cartridges does the 7506R95 snap onto?
North N-series gas cartridges: N75001L, N75002L, N75003L, N75004L, and 75SCL. Not for P100 combination cartridges β those already have integrated P100 filtration.
Why not just use a P100 combination cartridge instead?
Combination cartridges (e.g., 7581P100L) integrate gas sorbent and P100 filter together. The 7506R95 snap-on is appropriate when the underlying gas cartridge still has usable sorbent life and only a particle upgrade is needed. For new cartridge selection, a combination cartridge with integrated P100 is more convenient and provides higher particle efficiency (99.97% P100 vs. 95% R95).
What does the R95 rating mean?
R = oil resistant (maintains performance in oil aerosol for a limited time), 95 = 95% minimum particle filtration efficiency. NIOSH R-class filters may be used in oil environments for up to 8 hours of use time per single-shift NIOSH testing criteria. After 8 hours of oil exposure or per your written replacement schedule, the filter should be replaced.
Is fit testing required?
Yes β OSHA 1910.134(f)(2). Annual fit testing for the facepiece before operational use.
