Heiman S1-S Photoelectric Smoke Detector — 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke Alarm Overview

The Heiman S1-S Photoelectric Smoke Detector is a standalone, battery-operated smoke alarm built around a 10-year sealed lithium battery. You install it once and leave it: there are no removable batteries to buy and no nightly low-battery chirps until the alarm reaches the end of its service life, at which point you simply replace the whole unit.

Its photoelectric sensor is optimized for the slow, smoldering fires — smoldering upholstery, bedding, or electrical insulation — that tend to produce thick smoke before they flare. That makes it a sensible choice for bedrooms, hallways outside sleeping areas, and living rooms. For whole-home coverage, fire-safety guidance calls for a smoke alarm on every level of the home and inside or near every sleeping area.

Be clear on what this unit is and is not: it is a smoke-only alarm. It does not detect carbon monoxide, and it is a self-contained battery unit rather than a hardwired, interconnected alarm. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and requires a dedicated CO alarm — pair this smoke detector with a separate carbon monoxide alarm for complete protection. Browse all smoke detectors or compare picks in our best smoke detectors guide.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Bedroom & sleeping-area protection Excellent Photoelectric sensing reacts fast to smoldering bedding and upholstery fires; sealed battery means no chirps to wake you. Install inside or just outside each bedroom.
Hallways and living areas Excellent Mount on the ceiling or high on the wall in hallways outside sleeping areas and in living rooms where smoldering fires commonly start.
Whole-home, every-level coverage Very good Place one on every level including the basement. As a standalone alarm it sounds locally only — it is not interconnected, so units do not trigger each other.
Carbon monoxide detection Not suitable This is a smoke-only alarm and does not sense CO. Add a dedicated CO alarm near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances.
Kitchen / near cooking Limited Keep at least 10 ft from cooking appliances to reduce nuisance alarms; photoelectric units resist cooking smoke better than ionization but should still be sited away from the stove.
Hardwired interconnect retrofit Not suitable This is a self-contained battery unit, not a hardwired/interconnected alarm. Choose a hardwired model if you need linked alarms wired to AC power.

A smoke alarm and a carbon-monoxide alarm detect different hazards — install both (or a combination unit) on every level and near each sleeping area, and interconnect them where possible. Test monthly and replace at the unit's end-of-life date (CO sensors typically last 5–10 years; smoke alarms about 10). Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so a working alarm is your only warning — look for UL 2034 (CO) / UL 217 (smoke) listing. See how to test a smoke & CO alarm and the CO detector placement guide.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • 10-year sealed lithium battery — no battery replacements for the life of the alarm
  • No late-night low-battery chirps until end of service life
  • Photoelectric sensor responds quickly to smoldering fires common in bedrooms and living spaces
  • Battery-operated and self-contained — installs anywhere with no wiring
  • Lower nuisance-alarm tendency than ionization-only units near everyday smoke
  • Single test button for routine function checks
Cons
  • Smoke-only — does not detect carbon monoxide
  • Standalone unit, not hardwired or interconnected, so alarms do not link together
  • Sealed battery is not user-replaceable; replace the whole unit at end of life
  • Must be replaced roughly every 10 years (smoke-alarm end-of-life)
  • Less optimized for fast-flaming fires than an ionization sensor

How It Compares

Within WC Safety's battery smoke-alarm lineup, the Heiman S1-S pairs photoelectric (smoldering-fire) sensing with a 10-year sealed battery, so it never needs a battery swap. If you specifically want ionization sensing — quicker on fast-flaming fires — and a user-replaceable 9V battery, the Kidde i9010 ionization smoke alarm is the alternative. For a simple, traditional battery smoke alarm, see the Kidde 10SDR battery smoke alarm. None of these detect carbon monoxide; for CO coverage choose a dedicated unit such as the First Alert CO250 carbon monoxide alarm. The S1-S is the pick when you want set-and-forget power and smoldering-fire response in bedrooms and hallways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Heiman S1-S detect carbon monoxide?

No. The S1-S is a smoke-only photoelectric alarm and does not sense carbon monoxide. Because CO is colorless and odorless, you need a separate detector — see our selection of carbon monoxide alarms at /collections/carbon-monoxide-alarms-detectors.

What type of sensor does the S1-S use?

It uses a photoelectric sensor, which responds quickly to the slow, smoldering fires that often start in bedding, upholstery, and living spaces. This differs from ionization sensors, which react faster to fast-flaming fires.

How is the S1-S powered?

It runs on a built-in 10-year sealed lithium battery. It is battery-operated and self-contained, so there is no wiring and no removable battery to replace during the unit's service life.

Do I ever have to change the battery?

No. The sealed lithium battery is designed to last the alarm's full service life — about 10 years. When the battery nears end of life, the unit signals replacement and you replace the whole alarm rather than the battery.

Will it chirp in the middle of the night when the battery runs low?

The sealed 10-year battery is built to avoid the periodic low-battery chirps that come from swappable-battery alarms. It only signals at end of life, at which point you replace the unit.

Is the S1-S hardwired or interconnected with other alarms?

No. It is a standalone, battery-operated unit. It is not hardwired to your home's AC power and does not interconnect with other alarms, so one alarm sounding will not trigger the others. If you need linked alarms, choose a hardwired interconnect model from /collections/smoke-detectors.

Where should I install the S1-S?

Fire-safety guidance recommends a smoke alarm on every level of the home and inside or near every sleeping area. Mount it on the ceiling or high on the wall, and keep it at least 10 feet from cooking appliances to reduce nuisance alarms. See /blogs/guides/best-smoke-detectors-2026 for placement tips.

Is photoelectric better than ionization?

Photoelectric sensing reacts faster to smoldering fires and is generally less prone to cooking-smoke nuisance alarms, while ionization reacts faster to fast-flaming fires. For balanced coverage many homes use both types; if you want ionization, see the Kidde i9010 at /products/kidde-i9010-ionization-smoke-alarm-9v-battery.

How often should I replace a smoke alarm?

Smoke alarms should be replaced about every 10 years. Since the S1-S battery is sealed for roughly that span, you replace the entire unit at end of life rather than servicing it.

Does the S1-S have a digital display?

No. It is an audible alarm with a test button rather than a digital-readout unit. You confirm operation by pressing the test button periodically.

How do I test the S1-S?

Press the test button to confirm the alarm sounds, and test regularly. For a full routine, see our walkthrough on how to test a smoke and CO alarm at /blogs/how-to-guide/how-to-test-a-smoke-and-co-alarm.

What should I pair with this smoke alarm for full home safety?

Pair it with a dedicated carbon monoxide alarm, since this unit detects smoke only. A combination approach — smoke alarms plus CO alarms near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances — gives the most complete coverage. Browse CO options at /collections/co-detectors.

Small package and modem look
Won't really know how well this works unless I have a fire or wait to see if the battery lasts the expected 10 years. But I like the small size and modern look. I put them in four of my bedrooms. Well priced and easy to install too.

Not true 10 year batteries
Other reviewers have photos of 10-year sealed non-removable batteries. I received These smoke detectors and they look the same but when you flip them over and open up the back it has a 10-year shelf life when not in use and it's a removable 3 volt battery.. Not what I needed. Does not meet HUD standards. Had to return and go to the store and buy 10 years smoke detectors with sealed non-removable batteries.

Small, unobtrusive detector
This is a really small detector, so it's less intrusive than most. I have no experience with how well it works or how loud it is, but i expect it will be fine. I like the magnetic mount.

Good detector
I bought it as it has a photoelectric sensor which is less likely to have a nuisance alarm from cooking. I like the 10 year battery life as detectors should be replaced after 10 years anyway
