Rating shown is the Amazon customer rating at the time of writing, not our own score. Specification-based assessment by Steven Eaton, WC Safety Editorial, from the published Carhartt listing and ASTM F2413 protective-footwear requirements. We have not hands-on or laboratory-tested this product.
The Rugged Flex FF6213 is Carhartt's mobility play: a waterproof 6-inch steel-toe built around outsole and midsole flex, for trades that climb, kneel, and drive as much as they stand. The premise is simple β a boot that bends where the foot bends gets worn properly laced instead of half-tied.

Where this model fits
It suits delivery-heavy site work, equipment operators, and crews on mixed terrain in wet weather. Where maximum underfoot stiffness matters β rebar walking, shovel work β a traditional welted pattern like this family's Traditional Welt serves better.
Category guidance lives in our safety-boot selection guide and the steel vs composite toe comparison; ASTM F2413 markings are decoded in the footwear ratings reference.
How we assess this product
WC Safety is an independent PPE review and research site. We do not sell, ship, or stock anything, and we have not physically tested this work boot. What we do is read the published Carhartt specification against the governing standard, flag what the listing does and does not state, and place the product in context next to the alternatives we cover. Where a number matters for compliance - a rating, a class, a temperature, a voltage - we take it from the manufacturer listing and expect you to confirm it on the live listing before you buy. The star rating on this page belongs to Amazon customers, not to us. Read more across our hand protection and hard hats coverage.

What to check before you buy
- ASTM F2413 markings
- The marking on the boot tells you what it is rated for - impact and compression (I/C 75 or 50), plus optional ratings such as metatarsal (Mt), electrical hazard (EH), static dissipative (SD) or puncture resistance (PR).
- Toe cap material
- Steel is thinnest for a given protection level; composite is non-metallic and does not conduct temperature or trip metal detectors; alloy sits between the two.
- Electrical hazard vs. static dissipative
- EH insulates the wearer from live circuits; SD does the opposite and bleeds static to ground. They are not interchangeable and choosing wrongly removes the protection you wanted.
- Fit over the whole shift
- Feet swell during a shift. A boot fitted tight first thing in the morning is a different boot by mid-afternoon.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'Rugged Flex' actually change?
Flex zones in the sole package that reduce the break-in fight and the mid-day fatigue of stiff boots. Protection is unchanged β the steel cap carries the ASTM rating β the difference is how the boot moves through a work day.
Is a flexible boot less protective?
The rated protections β toe cap, and whatever marks the label carries β are identical. What a softer package gives up is shank-stiff support for ladder rungs and shovel edges; trades living on those pick stiffer builds.
How should the waterproofing be maintained?
Rinse off site mud, dry away from direct heat, and condition the leather before it cracks β waterproof membranes fail early when the leather around them dries and splits. Standing water past the collar defeats any 6-inch boot.
