Rating shown is the Amazon customer rating at the time of writing, not our own score. Specification-based assessment by Steven Eaton, WC Safety Editorial, from the published KEEN Utility listing and ASTM F2413 protective-footwear requirements. We have not hands-on or laboratory-tested this product.
The Flint 2 with VersaTREAD is KEEN's slip-first answer in this set: a mid-height steel-toe whose outsole compound and geometry are aimed at oily and wet floors β the hazard class where most real boot incidents happen. It reads as an athletic-build work boot rather than a traditional leather platform.
Key details from the KEEN Utility listing
- KEEN Utility Men's Flint 2 VersaTREAD Non-Slip Mid Steel Toe Work Boot
Where this model fits
It suits plants, kitchens-adjacent industrial work, and warehouse floors where slip is the daily threat and heavy drop hazards are occasional. For sustained wet outdoor work, the waterproof members of this KEEN set take over.
Category guidance lives in our safety-boot selection guide and the steel vs composite toe comparison; ASTM F2413 markings are decoded in the footwear ratings reference.
How we assess this product
WC Safety is an independent PPE review and research site. We do not sell, ship, or stock anything, and we have not physically tested this work boot. What we do is read the published KEEN Utility specification against the governing standard, flag what the listing does and does not state, and place the product in context next to the alternatives we cover. Where a number matters for compliance - a rating, a class, a temperature, a voltage - we take it from the manufacturer listing and expect you to confirm it on the live listing before you buy. The star rating on this page belongs to Amazon customers, not to us. Read more across our hand protection and hard hats coverage.

What to check before you buy
- ASTM F2413 markings
- The marking on the boot tells you what it is rated for - impact and compression (I/C 75 or 50), plus optional ratings such as metatarsal (Mt), electrical hazard (EH), static dissipative (SD) or puncture resistance (PR).
- Toe cap material
- Steel is thinnest for a given protection level; composite is non-metallic and does not conduct temperature or trip metal detectors; alloy sits between the two.
- Electrical hazard vs. static dissipative
- EH insulates the wearer from live circuits; SD does the opposite and bleeds static to ground. They are not interchangeable and choosing wrongly removes the protection you wanted.
- Fit over the whole shift
- Feet swell during a shift. A boot fitted tight first thing in the morning is a different boot by mid-afternoon.

Frequently asked questions
What does VersaTREAD change on an oily floor?
Compound and tread geometry tuned for oil-wet traction β the slip-resistance rating class most relevant to indoor industrial floors. No sole makes oil safe; the difference is the margin it buys while housekeeping catches up.
Is an athletic-build boot durable enough for site work?
For its intended floors, yes β the trade is that softer athletic builds wear faster under abrasion-heavy outdoor use than full-grain leather platforms. Match the boot to the floor it will live on.
Mid height versus 6-inch β what am I choosing?
Ankle mobility versus coverage: mids move faster and run cooler; 6-inch shafts guard against strikes and debris. Slip-focused indoor roles usually take the mid; mixed site work takes the taller shaft.
