WC Safety Editorial Pick: The SU-690 Violet is WC Safety's pick for healthcare workers with mild glove-related skin sensitivity who need a reduced-accelerator exam nitrile—thinner than the fully accelerator-free Supreno SE but more skin-friendly than standard nitrile.

For a full performance breakdown, sizing analysis, and comparison against alternatives, see our Ansell Microflex SU-690 Violet Nitrile Exam Gloves in-depth review published by the WC Safety editorial team.

The Ansell SU-690 Violet Nitrile exam glove uses a reduced-accelerator formulation—lower concentrations of the thiuram and carbamate vulcanization accelerators responsible for Type IV contact dermatitis in sensitive workers—at 3.9 mil with a violet color to distinguish it from standard blue or purple exam gloves in multi-glove clinical environments.

Healthcare workers, dental professionals, and clinical lab technicians who have experienced mild skin irritation from standard nitrile exam gloves but have not been confirmed with Type IV accelerator allergy. Also suitable for facilities transitioning to accelerator-reduced gloves as a proactive skin-health measure without the premium of fully accelerator-free options.

Compatibility and Application

The SU-690 is exam-grade for standard clinical procedures. For confirmed Type IV contact dermatitis requiring zero accelerator content, see the Microflex Supreno SE Accelerator-Free. For chemo drug handling, see Kimtech Purple USP 800 or Medline Restore ASTM D6978. For a broader selection, browse the complete nitrile gloves collection at WC Safety, organized by thickness, brand, and intended use.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Reduced-accelerator formulation addresses mild glove-related skin irritation without full accelerator-free premium
  • Violet color distinguishes it from standard blue and purple chemo gloves in multi-glove dispensing systems
  • 3.9 mil thin gauge maintains tactile sensitivity for clinical exam and phlebotomy work
  • Ansell manufacturing quality and documentation for compliance verification

Cons

  • Reduced-accelerator is not zero-accelerator — workers with confirmed Type IV allergy need the Supreno SE
  • 100/box at Ansell exam-grade pricing is higher per-pair than basic commodity exam nitrile

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 'reduced-accelerator' the same as 'accelerator-free'?

No. Reduced-accelerator gloves lower the concentration of vulcanization accelerators (thiurams, carbamates) versus standard nitrile. Accelerator-free gloves (like the Microflex Supreno SE) eliminate them entirely. For mild sensitivity without confirmed Type IV allergy, reduced-accelerator is often sufficient.

How do I know if I need reduced-accelerator or fully accelerator-free?

If you have had skin irritation from standard nitrile and your symptoms resolve with reduced-accelerator gloves, that formulation is sufficient. If symptoms persist with reduced-accelerator, consult an occupational medicine physician—confirmed Type IV dermatitis requires the fully accelerator-free Supreno SE.

What sizes are available for the SU-690?

XS, S, M, L, XL. Confirm your size using Ansell's sizing chart (palm circumference measurement) before ordering a full case.

How many pairs per box?

50 pairs in a 100-count box. The SU-690 is ambidextrous.

Can I order a mixed-size case?

Amazon does not currently support mixed-size single orders. Place separate orders for each size needed.

Is the violet color specific to Ansell's reduced-accelerator line?

Violet/purple is used by Ansell to distinguish the SU-690 from standard blue exam gloves. Note that other manufacturers also use purple/violet for chemo-rated gloves—verify which glove is in use when working with multiple SKUs in a facility.

Can the SU-690 be used for food handling?

Yes. Nitrile, powder-free, latex-free. Violet is atypical in food-service color coding; verify with your local food authority before adoption.

Is this glove appropriate for phlebotomy?

Yes. 3.9 mil exam-grade barrier is appropriate for blood draw, venipuncture, and blood-borne pathogen protection under OSHA standard precautions.

Can I get a documentation letter confirming the accelerator-reduced formulation?

Yes. Ansell provides technical data sheets confirming the SU-690 reduced-accelerator formulation for occupational health and compliance documentation. Contact Ansell directly or through their professional distributor network.

What is the shelf life?

Three to five years in cool, dry storage away from UV and ozone.

Does the thin 3.9 mil gauge make the SU-690 more likely to tear?

At 3.9 mil, the SU-690 is a standard exam-gauge glove appropriate for clinical tasks. Replace immediately upon any visible tear or puncture. Not designed for mechanical or industrial tasks that create elevated puncture risk.

Is the SU-690 available through a GPO or hospital purchasing contract?

Contact Ansell or your hospital group purchasing organization (GPO) for contract pricing and availability under existing agreements.

Great gloves, much more durable than other brand I tried
TL;DR: These are very good gloves and are much more durable than the other ones I bought. They are a little more expensive, so if durability isn't an issue, those others will suffice, but then, since those appear to be no different from the generic gloves available everywhere, you may be able to find cheaper ones with similar performance. However, if durability is important, while I can't say these are the best since I only tried the two, they are definitely significantly better.I bought a box of these and a box of Semperguard "Blue Nitrile Disposable Gloves Powder Free Textured 4 Mil Thickness Latex Free Food & Safety Glove (Large Box)" at the same time. I've used both several times, almost exclusively for light-duty tasks, mainly cleaning, and for that purpose both work fine, and since those are a bit cheaper they're really the better choice for that. These are also a tighter fit (snug, not tight), but I got them in medium whereas the others I got in large (I almost always get gloves of all types in large, and I wasn't sure which way to go for these; medium works but large probably would as well), so it's not a straight comparison. I generally prefer the snugness of these, but they're harder to take off because of it, so the others are my go to if I'm doing something where I want to be able to reuse them. If I'm doing something more detailed, the second-skin fit of these is nice. But again, that's largely due to the difference in ordered sizes. I only mention it in case it helps someone who's tried one pick a size in the other, and to basically say that for light-duty tasks, they work equally well to the point the fit is how I choose which to go with. That said, for heavier-duty tasks that are going to be rougher on the gloves, I would definitely recommend these. The other gloves are just your generic, cheap nitrile gloves you can get pretty much anywhere, whereas these have a more durable look and feel to them that's slight but instantly noticeable. I did some tests to compare the durability and the results were pretty much what I expected (I tried very hard to not be biased by the expectation while doing the tests and did what I could to keep them fair). The first thing I did was put a glove on each hand and repeatedly dragged my index (pointer) and middle fingers across a large rough stone, one hand next to the other. I also crossed my hands after a while to make sure each glove was exposed to both areas of the stone, in case one was a bit rougher than the other. It didn't take very long for a hole to develop on one finger of the other gloves. It took a while past that before a hole developed in the second finger and the first hole developed in these, both of which happened close to the same time. I went a bit longer after this then stopped. Even the second hold in the other glove was a bit larger than the first hole in these (again, they started at roughly the same time), so it seems not only are those more prone to tearing, but the tears worsen quicker as well. Then again, it's only a small difference, and a small sample size, so it's hard to be sure based on that. The second test I did was I inserted a tool into the ring finger of each glove (to simulate a finger, for safety vs using an actual finger) and used my Milwaukee "Dremel" to "grind" the finger with a 1" felt polishing wheel at a speed setting of 2.5/6, which is ~13,500rpm assuming the speed increases linearly. I had to lift up periodically to check the progress, but I did so briefly and tried to keep the frequency and duration of doing so similar for each glove. I also tried to keep the pressure the same. Not the most scientific of tests, but I'm satisfied with it. This glove lasted around 45-50 seconds before a tear developed, and I stopped at one minute. As you can see in the picture, that extra 10-15 seconds didn't do much to increase the size of the tear, as it's still quite small. The other glove, on the other hand, developed a tear within 15-20 seconds, and I stopped at 30 seconds, a whole half-minute less than this one. As you can see, it was basically demolished. And again, it seems that once a tear starts, it enlarges much more quickly.

Great automotive gloves
Great gloves for working on vehicles. I have used most of my first box, will be ordering more.I just removed/reinstalled the transmission in a 2000 Audi TT Quattro, which is probably one of the toughest transmission jobs on any car. Not only did these gloves protect my hands from the years of gunk on the engine/transmission, but also oil, break fluid, gear oil and gasoline. There were lots of sharp edges/corners and these gloves held up to this abuse great, I only split open 1 glove and it have been work for several hours and had already held up to many snags. They are thin enough that I still have good dexterity, allowing me to pick up small items and deal with other situations where a typical automotive working glove simply will not work. One note, don't put hand lotion on shortly before trying to put these gloves on, it makes them very difficult to get on. Other than that lesson learned, I had no problems getting these gloves on and they fit snug on my hands.I wear a medium or large glove depending on brand, so I got medium for these, I like the fit, snug but not too tight.

Best Gloves That I Have Found
I found these gloves years ago when working as a mechanic. As long as you buy the correct size the grip is great and the thickness is just right as you still retained that minute feeling in your fingers. These were also durable enough to use around all kinds of chemicals without it causing the glove to deteriorate. As long as the price is not outrageous, like during Covid, these are an excellent value.

Good gloves
I have been buying these gloves routinely for years - I work as a consultant for automotive dealerships and wear them while inspecting service departments and body shops. They are more durable than others I have tried, easily last for a couple of hours, and give me the confidence that I am keeping nasty chemicals off my hands (check your Material Safety Data Sheets to ensure you are selecting the right gloves for the job!). Occasionally, I can even get them off and on again for re-use, albeit it can be a little tricky. The purplish color is a bit odd, but since I'm a girl I can get away with it. :)Since most of my glove-wearing constitutes picking up a chemical bottle and examining it or digging a not-quite-empty paint can out of the trash, I haven't put them through constant rigorous work. I do, however, wear them for personal automotive maintenance jobs (e.g. oil changes, coolant flushes) and they hold up well through these tasks. One pair has always lasted the entire job.In my opinion, gloves are a personal choice, and you should keep trying until you find ones you like. Since I work around automotive technicians every day, I can verify that no one brand of glove will make everyone happy. This brand makes me happy!

One of the best Nitrile gloves for the garage, hands down!!
.For those like me that are allergic to latex of any kind these gloves are a must. They hold up way better than cheaper gloves and seem to be a little more puncture resistant than others I've tried. They are not super long cuffs as some of the other gloves but will cover past the wrist. The only drawback is if they sit around too long they seem to get a little brittle and tear more easily when trying to put on your hands, but I'm talking over a year. I usually purchase by the case of 1000 to make them cheaper but use that many in about a year’s time. It's when I get to the last box or two I notice that they seem to tear a little more easily. I've tried the off brands white or black and even the vinyl gloves but these seem to be the best for the money. Thanks Amazon for another great product at a reasonable cost

Decent gloves for mechanical work
I'm a home / hobbyist mechanic these days. I use these to keep from getting greasy, or covered in paint, etc. They seem to hold up to brake cleaner, oil, grease, brake fluid, etc. Compared to "el-cheapo" nitriles I bought before which tore after a few minutes, these hold up for hours. They are thin enough to feel what I'm doing but don't tear when I brush up against what I am working on. The texture lets my grip my tools well. I know that something thicker will hold up even better, but these are a good compromise for me. Relatively good price, and worth the cost difference.Recommended!

Fits like a glove
I found my glove for patrol. In my line of work I need a glove that isn’t too thick, isn’t too thin, can be put on quickly, and fits well. This glove checks all the boxes.

Overpriced - I recall when these were much cheaper -- just a year ago.
The gloves are fine, and they actually ARE Extra Large - a number of companies cheat on this and unless the people have VERY small hands such that Extra Large is more of a normal medium - their idea of Ex Large is way too small. But THESE fit fine and even have a bit of looseness . That said however, the prices on these are ridiculously high. I have been buying rubber gloves of this type for over 15 years and never have I paid over $9 a box for them...these were almost 3 times that. Now, I understand there is big Virus out there but over-charging the public is unethical. I doubt that Amazon will let this review go through so I am speaking my mind anyway so that maybe someone there will live up to their word (Amazon) to stop these Covid 19 price gouging tactics some sellers are doing.
