Peltor Sport Banded Hearing Protector Overview

The Peltor Sport banded hearing protector (model Peltor 97065-00001 earplugs) is a reusable, NRR 28-rated ear defender built for intermittent noise exposure. As Peltor Sport NRR 28 banded earplugs, it pairs soft, washable plugs with a flexible band that can be worn over the head, under the chin, or behind the neck.

Safety note: a labeled NRR is a lab-tested ceiling, not a guarantee - real-world attenuation is typically lower once fit, wear pattern, and site noise conditions are accounted for. Firearm noise in particular can exceed 140 dB at the muzzle, so many shooters pair banded or foam plugs with earmuffs for double protection on centerfire rifles and pistols, especially indoors.

As a banded hearing protector for shooting, this 3M Peltor banded earplugs model suits range, hunting, and other intermittent-noise activities where you need to remove protection quickly to hear range commands or conversation. These reusable banded ear plugs detach individually from the band for washing, and Peltor also sells the corded Sport Tri-Flange line if you prefer a lower-profile alternative to the banded style. See our what is NRR guide for how the rating is tested, and our highest NRR ear plugs guide if you need a higher-rated option for louder environments.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Shooting range and hunting Strong fit Purpose-built for intermittent firearm noise; quick on/off for range commands.
Lawn and yard equipment, light DIY tools Strong fit NRR 28 covers moderate intermittent noise from mowers, trimmers, and hand tools.
Continuous industrial or shop noise all shift Verify first Compare against dedicated industrial banded or foam options if worn continuously for a full shift.
High-decibel centerfire firearms indoors Pair with earmuffs Consider double protection (plugs plus earmuffs) for very loud indoor ranges.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • NRR 28 dB rating, independently confirmed for this SKU
  • Soft, washable, individually detachable plugs
  • Flexible band worn multiple ways for comfort and hat compatibility
  • Lightweight alternative to full earmuffs for intermittent noise
  • Low price point for a reusable banded protector
Cons
  • Banded seal is generally less consistent than a well-fitted earmuff for continuous noise
  • NRR 28 may be insufficient alone for very loud indoor firearm ranges without doubling up
  • Not positioned as an industrial full-shift hearing protector
  • Judge.me review average of 3.75 - check current customer feedback before ordering

How It Compares

Peltor also sells this in a corded style - the Peltor Sport Tri-Flange corded earplugs - for a lower-profile pocket option instead of a band. For higher-rated protection in louder environments, compare the Peltor Sport Ultimate hearing protector (NRR 30), or step up to full earmuffs like the 3M Peltor X4A earmuffs for continuous high-noise work. Browse our highest NRR ear plugs guide for more options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR rating of the Peltor Sport banded hearing protector?

NRR 28 dB, verified against the manufacturer's published specification for SKU 97065-00001. NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) is the US ANSI S3.19 metric for hearing protector attenuation.

How is a banded hearing protector different from earmuffs?

A banded protector uses soft plugs on a lightweight flexible band instead of full ear cups. It weighs less and is faster to put on and take off, which suits intermittent noise like shooting between strings, but it typically doesn't match the consistent seal of a well-fitted earmuff for continuous high-decibel work.

Can I wash the plugs on this Peltor Sport protector?

Yes. The plugs are soft and washable, and they detach individually from the band for cleaning. Let them air dry fully before reattaching so the material doesn't degrade.

What positions can the band be worn in?

The flexible band is designed to be worn multiple ways - over the head, under the chin, or behind the neck - so you can pick the position most comfortable for your activity or that fits best with a cap or hat.

Is this a good fit for shooting and hunting?

Yes. This is the Peltor Sport line, positioned for range, hunting, and other intermittent-noise outdoor activities rather than continuous industrial noise. The banded design lets you quickly remove protection to hear range commands or conversation between shots.

Is NRR 28 enough for firearm noise?

Gunfire can exceed 140 dB at the muzzle, well above hearing-damage thresholds, so many shooters combine banded or foam plugs with earmuffs (double protection) for centerfire rifles and pistols, especially indoors. Match your protection to your specific firearm and range environment rather than relying on a single NRR number.

Are the plugs replaceable?

Yes. The plugs on banded designs like this one are meant to be replaced as they wear out, rather than requiring you to replace the whole band. Check for Peltor-compatible replacement pods sized for this model.

How does this compare to Peltor's corded earplugs?

This is the banded style - plugs mounted on a rigid-yet-flexible band you wear around your neck or head. Peltor also sells corded reusable earplugs, like the Sport Tri-Flange line, which use a cord between two individual plugs instead of a band. Choose banded for quick on/off convenience or corded for a lower-profile, pocket-friendly option.

Can I wear this under a shooting muff for double protection?

Banded plugs can be worn under some over-the-head earmuffs for double hearing protection in very loud environments, but confirm the band and plugs don't prevent the earmuff cups from sealing properly against your head, since a broken earmuff seal reduces its effectiveness.

What is the SKU for this product?

Model 97065-00001.

Is hearing protection required at a shooting range?

Most ranges require hearing protection due to firearm noise levels far exceeding safe exposure thresholds. Check your specific range's posted rules, and if you shoot regularly, consider a hearing conservation routine that includes properly fitted, rated protection every time. See our best in-ear hearing protection for shooting guide for more range-specific options.

When should I replace this hearing protector?

Replace the plugs when they harden, tear, or no longer seal well, and replace the band if it loses tension or cracks. Worn components no longer deliver the rated NRR attenuation, even if they still look wearable. Browse the wider reusable earplugs collection for other banded and corded replacement options.

Comfortable & Effective
A little more expensive, but the only hearing protection of this type I've found that works. The ear buds can flex on the mounting band, allowing the bud to comfortably & effectively seal to the ear.

Super quiet
I discovered these plugs by accident for motorcycle riding and loved them ever since. The hard plastic center makes it easy to push it into your ears and, once there, the world β€œdisappears”. They work amazingly and they are washable.

Good for Shotgun shooting in open spaces
I have tried numerous styles of earpro for use in trap and skeet including some expensive electronic models. Over the ear types interfere with mounting the gun, and even the most "compact" models causes loud noise as the gun bumps the earpro. Styles that depend on friction to stay in the ear tend to back out too frequently for me. This style works better than anything else I have tried including some banded types with multiple flanges. The foam plugs pivot making for an optimal fit even if the geometry of each ear canal differs. Although sound reduction is adequate for 12 gauge shooting in open spaces, I seriously question the 28 NRR rating. There is no way these would work for me with centerfire rifle or pistol and probably not even for 22 pistol on an indoor range. In fact, it is possible for me to hear conversations while wearing these. Your mileage may vary depending on how good the fit is. I love the fact that these are inexpensive and come with replacement foam plugs.

My ears are still ringing...
They fit great and were comfortable (I wore the band under the chin, because I was wearing a hat). Everything was good when I was the only one on the range. It was even fine when a guy came in two lanes down. I was learning a new gun with a much longer and heavier trigger pull than I'm used to, so I'd planned to be there a long time. By the time 4 or 5 other shooters came into the range, it was uncomfortably loud. When my ears insisted that everyone on the range was firing cannons, I had to leave (fyi: The rifle range is segregated on the opposite side of the building and to my knowledge, there aren't any canon ranges in, well... not anywhere, so it was just handguns on a half-full range). When I got to my car, the ringing in my ears informed me that I had put off leaving too long. The plugs were still firmly seated when I went to remove them, so I don't understand how my old, uncomfortable muffs with a smidgen lower NRR did a better job (and I'm kicking myself for taking them out of my bag to make room for extra ammo). Nine hours later, the ringing is almost gone, but the experience will never be forgotten. I'm not going to toss these in the trash, but they'll never go back in my range bag again.

Worked well until it broke.
Fits comfortably, good protection. Unfortunately after only a few uses the plastic band (orange) broke right at the curve.

Ok - but collect ear wax and become too filthy to use
They are a magnet for pulling wax out of ears. Then, when used in woodshop, the plugs collect sawdust and become disgusting very quickly.

these can replace your large ear protection!
i was skeptical about these when i bought them but i have been to both the indoor/outdoor range and they work just as well as my standard peltor ear protection.the reason i went for these is when shooting rifles standard large protection can be prohibitive.these dont get in the way at all, just buyem you wont be disappointed.one thing to note is that when you put then in your ears (instructions state this and it works) is to pull down on them while working them in, youll see what im saying when you get them and try them.great product and super cheap price, i wish i never bought the large ear muff ones!
