Kidde COPDLQW Smart CO Alarm with Air Quality Monitor, AA Backup (Plug-In WiFi) Overview

The Kidde COPDLQW smart CO alarm with indoor air quality monitor is a WiFi-enabled residential carbon monoxide alarm that also tracks air quality. It uses an electrochemical CO sensor, plugs into a 120V AC outlet with a rotating plug for upright fit, and uses two replaceable AA backup batteries (not lithium) for power-outage protection. A backlit display and multi-color LED indicators show status at a glance.

As the Kidde COPDLQW, this is a smart CO alarm with AA backup that you maintain by swapping batteries. As a plug-in WiFi CO alarm it sends alerts over 2.4GHz WiFi through the Kidde app, and as an indoor air quality monitor and carbon monoxide alarm with app it pairs CO protection with temperature, humidity, and TVOC trends.

This is a residential CO alarm, not a smoke alarm or an industrial instrument. Compare it against other smart CO alarms, including the sealed 10-year Kidde KN-COP-DP-10YL-AQ-WF, the wider Kidde CO alarms range, and the carbon monoxide alarms and detectors category before ordering.

What This Alarm Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Home CO protection Purpose-built Electrochemical CO alarm with local horn and display.
Replaceable-battery backup Strong Two AA batteries you can swap; do not use lithium.
Remote alerts while away Strong 2.4GHz WiFi and the Kidde app push notifications.
Air-quality awareness Strong Tracks temperature, humidity, and TVOC trends.
Smoke detection / industrial CO Not suitable Add a smoke alarm; use industrial monitors at work.

A carbon monoxide alarm is a life-safety device, so treat any CO alarm as an emergency: get to fresh air, call for help, and have the source fixed by a professional. This is a residential early-warning alarm; it is not built for occupational settings where carbon monoxide can climb to IDLH concentrations that demand industrial gas-detection instruments and rescue procedures, so use the right tool for each environment. Install and place it per the Kidde manual and local codes, keep it plugged in with fresh AA backup batteries (not lithium), do not treat the TVOC air-quality reading as a substitute for the CO alarm, and replace the unit when it reaches end of life. Learn placement and CO risks in our CO detector placement guide and carbon monoxide exposure symptoms guide.

Cons
  • CO only β€” not a smoke alarm
  • Air-quality monitor omits particulates and CO2
  • AA batteries need periodic replacement (no sealed 10-year cell)

How It Compares

The COPDLQW is the AA-backup version of Kidde's smart CO and air-quality alarm. Weigh it against the alternatives before ordering:

Frequently Asked Questions

What backup battery does the COPDLQW use?

It uses two replaceable AA backup batteries to keep working during a power outage. Kidde specifies not to use lithium batteries in this unit. This differs from Kidde's sealed 10-year lithium model, where the whole unit is replaced rather than the battery.

How is the COPDLQW different from the 10-year sealed Kidde model?

Both are plug-in smart CO alarms with air quality monitoring, but the COPDLQW uses user-replaceable AA batteries, while the KN-COP-DP-10YL-AQ-WF uses a sealed 10-year lithium backup. Choose AA if you prefer swapping batteries, or the sealed model for a maintenance-free backup.

What does the air quality monitor measure?

It tracks temperature, relative humidity, and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), which are airborne chemicals that can affect comfort and health. It does not measure particulate matter, CO2, or smoke; it pairs those air-quality trends with carbon monoxide alarming.

Is this a smoke detector?

No. It is a carbon monoxide alarm with an air quality monitor, not a smoke alarm. If you also need smoke detection, add a dedicated smoke alarm or a combination smoke and CO alarm elsewhere in the home.

How does it connect and notify me?

It connects over 2.4GHz WiFi and sends real-time alerts through the Kidde app whether you are home or away. It also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice status and smart-home notifications.

What is the rotating plug for?

The rotating plug lets the alarm sit upright in most electrical outlets regardless of orientation, so the backlit display and multi-color LED status indicators face the right way and are easy to read.

How does it detect carbon monoxide?

It uses an electrochemical CO sensor, the standard technology for residential CO alarms, and alarms faster at higher CO concentrations. The backlit display and LED indicators show status at a glance.

How do I know when to replace the batteries or unit?

The alarm signals a low-battery condition so you can replace the AA batteries, and it will indicate end of life when the CO sensor has reached the end of its service span. Follow the Kidde manual for the exact battery and replacement guidance.

Is it a replacement for an industrial CO monitor?

No. It is a residential early-warning alarm. Workplaces where carbon monoxide can reach high, hazardous levels need occupational gas-detection instruments and procedures, not a home alarm. Match the device to the environment.

What is TVOC and why does it matter?

TVOC is total volatile organic compounds, a combined measure of airborne chemicals from sources like cleaning products, paint, and furnishings. Watching TVOC trends can prompt you to ventilate, though it is separate from the life-safety CO alarm.

Does the alarm work without the app?

Yes. It functions as a standalone CO alarm with a local horn and display. The app and voice assistants add remote alerts and air-quality trends, but the core carbon monoxide protection does not depend on your phone or WiFi.

What should I do when it alarms for CO?

Treat it as an emergency: move everyone to fresh air immediately, call emergency services or your gas utility, and do not re-enter until it is cleared. Then have the CO source found and fixed by a qualified professional before using the space again.

Smart, Reliable, and Easy to Set Up
This Kidde Smart Carbon Monoxide Detector and Air Quality Monitor is an excellent safety device for any home. Setup was quick and straightforward, and connecting it to Wi-Fi allowed me to receive real-time notifications directly on my phone for added peace of mind.I love that it not only detects carbon monoxide but also monitors indoor air quality, helping me stay informed about my home’s environment. The plug-in design is convenient, and the battery backup ensures protection even during power outages. The rotating plug makes placement flexible, and the alarm is loud enough to be heard throughout the house if an issue arises.Overall, this is a well-designed, dependable device that combines safety, smart features, and convenience in one unit. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enhance their home’s protection and air quality monitoring.

An excellent product to not only protect yourself but to learn about air quality
This carbon monoxide detector and indoor air quality monitor is an excellent product. Installation was very straightforward; one simply plugs it into an outlet and downloads the accompanying application to a smartphone or device. It features a very clear display, and the app provides comprehensive information regarding your home's air quality, which is truly beneficial. Not only does it offer peace of mind, but it also assists in improving the overall quality of the air breathed daily. We acquired this as a suitable replacement for our previous unit and are highly satisfied with it compared to our old monitor. Mounting was effortless, and there were no complicated instructions to follow to get it operational. The device includes a backup battery, which is a thoughtful feature in the event of a power outage, providing a significant amount of battery life until power is restored. Should a replacement be necessary in the future, it would be a simple process of swapping it out for a new one, which greatly simplifies maintaining the protection of one's home and self. Overall, this is a fantastic product that has provided valuable insights into aspects I hadn't previously considered. I truly appreciate it and would highly recommend it.

Device does not fit into a standard US electric outlet.
Beware. Plug did not fit into a standard US electric outlet. The device was not useable in my home.I have returned the device as directed at the Amazon store in Columbus Ohio but no refund issued. No communication at all that Amazon or Kidde even received the defective device.

Works great with slight annoyances
The Kidde Smart Carbon Monoxide Detector & Indoor Air Quality Monitor feels like a modern upgrade over the basic detectors most of us grew up with. Setup itself was easy, just plug it in, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and the app walks you through the process pretty quickly. I really like getting real-time alerts on my phone for CO issues or changes in air quality instead of relying only on an alarm going off in the house. The extra air quality features ended up being more useful than I expected. It tracks things like humidity and VOCs, so it’s interesting seeing how cooking, cleaning products, or even just daily activity affect the air indoors. The rotating plug is a small but genuinely thoughtful design choice, and the battery backup adds some peace of mind during outages. The alarm is loud, and overall the unit feels solid and reliable, which is exactly what you want from a safety device. My main complaint is the app/account side of things. Having to create an account for a carbon monoxide detector is annoying, and some features being locked behind a subscription feels unnecessary for a product already at this price point. The display also isn’t the easiest to read in a low outlet. Still, the smart alerts and added monitoring features make this feel much more useful than a standard detector.

Good Smart CO Detector - Best If You Actually Want the App Features
I bought this because I wanted more than a basic carbon monoxide alarm. The main benefit is that it plugs into the wall, has battery backup, and can send phone notifications, which gives more peace of mind when I am away and my pets are hpme. Setup through the app was reasonably straightforward, though like many smart home devices it works best if you already understand 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi setup. The display is useful because it lets you see status information without guessing from lights or chirps. The alarm is loud, and the unit feels like a serious safety device rather than a gadget. I also like having indoor air quality information in the same device, especially since it gives a little more context about what is happening in the room beyond just CO detection. There are a few tradeoffs. It is much more expensive than a simple standalone CO detector, so the value depends on whether you really want app alerts and air-quality monitoring. Also, some of the more detailed air-quality features appear tied to the app ecosystem, and I would prefer as much functionality as possible to be available without ongoing extras.Overall, this is a solid option if you want a plug-in CO detector with smart notifications and basic air-quality awareness. If all you need is a simple alarm, it may be more than necessary, but for remote alerts and added monitoring, it is a worthwhile upgrade.

Nifty device
The Kidde plug-in Wi-Fi enabled carbon monoxide detector is a great choice for many reasons. First, I appreciate the additional safety provided by AC power with battery backup. The battery is going to keep it running when electricity is knocked out, though of course you won’t get remote alerts if your WiFi is down. It’s a nice looking unit, compact and modern. The display is easily readable, but depending on where you plug it in, maybe not easy to access. And the reliability of a brand name device is definitely a plus. What most impressed me about it was the ability to access it through the app. You get instant reads of temperature, humidity, and air quality. They also have a subscription service for additional data, which we are not doing. Overall, while this is more expensive than a basic CO alarm, I really like the connected aspect of it. Very cool.
