Dräger X-plore 5500 Full Face Respirator Overview

The Dräger X-plore 5500 full face respirator (R55270) is a reusable, tight-fitting full-facepiece air-purifying respirator with two lateral bayonet connections for the Dräger X-plore bayonet filter series. The EPDM mask body has a double sealing frame with threefold sealing edges, a 180-degree distortion-free impact-resistant polycarbonate lens, and a five-point harness in a universal size.

As the Dräger X-plore 5500, this X-plore 5500 full face mask is the Dräger R55270 mask. As a Dräger twin filter respirator, this Dräger full face respirator is the mask only, so the filters that provide protection are sold separately.

Add the Dräger filters for your hazard: a Dräger X-plore P100 particulate filter or a gas cartridge such as the OV/P100 combination cartridge. Compare the Dräger X-plore 3300 half mask and the powered Dräger X-plore 8500 PAPR, and browse the range in full-face mask respirators.

What This Respirator Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Higher-protection respiratory work Purpose-built Full facepiece; APF 50 with the right filters.
Eye and face plus respiratory Strong 180-degree impact-resistant polycarbonate lens.
Particulate or gas hazards Filter-dependent Fit the Dräger X-plore filter for your exposure.
Clean-shaven wearers Required Tight-fitting; needs a fit test and seal.
Oxygen-poor or emergency air Not suitable Air-purifying; not for emergency atmospheres.

A respirator only protects within a complete, matched, compliant system. The X-plore 5500 is the mask only, so it provides no respiratory protection until you fit the correct Dräger X-plore bayonet filters; the protection you get is whatever those filters are rated for, so match the filter to your exposure. As a tight-fitting full facepiece it requires fit testing for each wearer and a clean-shaven seal, with a user seal check before every use; facial hair breaks the seal. Used correctly with the right filters it carries an OSHA assigned protection factor of 50. Because it is an air-purifying respirator, it is not for IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres, which require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA. Inspect and clean the mask, replace filters on schedule, and run the system within a written program under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dräger X-plore 5500 full face respirator?

It is a reusable, tight-fitting full-facepiece air-purifying respirator with two lateral bayonet connections for Dräger X-plore bayonet filters. It has an EPDM mask body, a 180-degree impact-resistant polycarbonate lens, and a five-point harness.

Are filters or cartridges included?

No. This listing is the mask only. The filters or cartridges that provide protection are Dräger X-plore bayonet filters, sold separately. Choose the filter for your hazard, such as a P100 particulate filter or a gas and vapor cartridge.

What assigned protection factor does it provide?

As a tight-fitting full facepiece air-purifying respirator it carries an OSHA assigned protection factor of 50 with the correct filters and a good fit. Achieving that protection depends on fit testing and a proper seal for each wearer.

Does it require fit testing?

Yes. Because it is a tight-fitting facepiece, it requires fit testing for each wearer under OSHA and a user seal check before every use, plus a clean-shaven seal area. Facial hair breaks the seal and voids the protection.

What filters does it use?

It uses the Dräger X-plore bayonet filter series, including P100 particulate filters and gas or combination cartridges such as organic vapor P100. Dräger bayonet filters are specific to the Dräger platform and are not interchangeable with other brands' bayonet filters.

Does the mask also protect my eyes and face?

Yes. The full facepiece has a 180-degree distortion-free impact-resistant polycarbonate lens that protects the eyes and face along with the respiratory protection from the filters. A glass lens option is also available for chemical resistance.

Why does it have a separate inner mask?

The X-plore 5500 has a separate inner half mask that directs incoming air across the lens, which keeps the lens fog-free and the view clear. It also helps lower breathing resistance and carbon dioxide buildup inside the mask.

Is it NIOSH approved?

Yes. The X-plore 5500 is certified to EN 136 Class 2 and NIOSH standards when used with approved Dräger X-plore filters. Use it only within its NIOSH approval and a written respiratory protection program.

Does it protect against gases or only particulates?

It depends on the filter you fit. With a P100 filter it is particulate; with a gas or combination cartridge it also addresses the gases that cartridge is rated for. Match the Dräger filter to your specific exposure.

Can I use it in an oxygen-poor or emergency atmosphere?

No. It is an air-purifying respirator, so it filters ambient air and is not for oxygen-poor or immediately dangerous atmospheres. Those require a supplied-air respirator or a self-contained air-tank apparatus, and you must confirm the environment first.

Do I need a written respiratory program?

Yes. Reusable respirators and their filters are used within a written respiratory protection program under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including training, medical evaluation, fit testing, and maintenance. Follow the Dräger manual for use and care.

How do I maintain it?

Inspect the facepiece, lens, valves, seal, and harness before each use, run a seal check, clean the mask per the Dräger schedule, and replace filters when spent or per your program. Store it clean and away from heat and sunlight.

Great working respirator
Respirator works very well, currently when I wear the mask I use p100/ov cartridges that work really good. A mask that I've added into my rotation of masks I use for my respitory allergies and sensitivity issuesDrawbacks are one size fits all, five point head harness, price.

Does not fit, fogs up, and can not be returned. Be warned
Bought for epoxy and painting VOC protection. I am very disappointed in this mask. There is not enough free flow when you exhale and you end up fogging up the mask, I’ve checked the one way valves and they all are functioning properly. The exhaust valve should be placed directly in front of your mouth but it’s below your chin instead. Terrible design. It is a not a good fit for someone with a larger face, even though it says one size fits all. Worst part is that it can’t be returned.

Great mask!!!
Great for splash exposure!! Use for cleaning where sprays can spash back into face. Nothing gets through. Takes a bit of figuring out for best fit but when that happens, it fits amazing!!

Expensive but you only have one set of lungs
I do some hobby auto painting and as such do not have a professional spray booth so protecting my lungs is important considering some of the chemicals in paints, thinners, hardners etc

I can breathe in severe weather now.
I have asthma and severe allergies. This is the easiest breathing respirator so far. I wish they had 2 sizes, this is about 2-3 percent to small for me (I have 7 5/8” head). Thank you Dräger. I am taking the box to my doctor’s office to recommend these. The one size fits all, never does.

Couldn’t return and the product was performing worse than 3m
Had odors coming through the mask and the straps are less comfortable than 3m full-face I have, wanted to return but yeah no option for that so if I could take the time back I would not order this one idk what I was think that this might be better than the 3m

Navy seals use drager for rebreathers. Their masks are top notch
Best mask ever for protection from chemicals. I resurface countertops and bathtubs. Some of the stuff we mix up and spray is really nasty. My coworkers are always coughing and complaining.. not me I don’t smell it at all with my Drager
