What the 3M 6006 Multi Gas and Vapor Cartridge Covers
It is a multi-gas and vapour bayonet cartridge, NIOSH-approved against a deliberately broad list: certain organic vapours, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, chlorine dioxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde and hydrogen fluoride. That breadth is its whole purpose β it is the cartridge you reach for when an environment mixes several gas hazards and a single-gas cartridge would leave a gap. The olive color band is the NIOSH code for exactly this kind of multi-gas cartridge, a quick visual confirmation you have the broad-spectrum one in hand.
What it is not is a particulate filter. The 6006 does nothing for dust, mist or fume, so for a job with both gas and particulate you either add a 2000-series filter with a 501 retainer, or reach for the 60926, which is the same multi-gas chemistry with a P100 built in. Broad-Spectrum vs Single-Hazard: Choosing the 6006
The temptation with a multi-gas cartridge is to treat it as a universal answer, and the honest guidance is the opposite: pick the narrowest cartridge that covers all your hazards. If your exposure is only organic vapour, the 6001 is the right, cheaper tool; if it is organic vapour plus acid gas, the 6003 fits. The 6006 earns its place when your environment genuinely mixes hazards the narrower cartridges miss β when ammonia, methylamine or formaldehyde sit alongside organic vapour and acid gases. There, a single broad cartridge beats trying to guess which narrow one to wear.
Two cautions come with the breadth. First, "broad" is not "everything" β the 6006 covers its approved list and nothing beyond it, so a gas outside the approval, or carbon monoxide, is still unprotected. Second, some of the listed gases carry different approval terms; hydrogen sulphide in particular may be an escape-only approval rather than continuous-use, and only the printed label tells you. Read the approval for your actual gas before relying on it, and manage service life with a change-out schedule since gases like formaldehyde have poor odour warning. Does it filter dust or particulate?
No β the 6006 is a gas-and-vapour cartridge only. It has no particulate filter and does nothing for dust, mist, welding fume or aerosols. If your job has both a gas hazard and a particulate one, you either add a 2000-series filter held on with a 501 retainer, or you use the 60926, which is the 6006's multi-gas chemistry with a P100 filter already built in. Do not assume a gas cartridge stops particles β it does not.
What is the difference between the 6006 and the 60926?
They share the same multi-gas chemistry; the 60926 adds a P100 particulate filter to it. Choose the plain 6006 when your hazard is purely gases and vapours, and the 60926 when you also face dust, mist or fume and want one cartridge to do both. The 6006 is lighter and lower-profile; the 60926 saves you stacking a separate filter. Match it to whether particulate is in the mix.
How does it compare to the 6003 acid gas cartridge?
The 6003 covers organic vapour and acid gases; the 6006 covers a wider list that adds ammonia, methylamine and formaldehyde on top of the organic-vapour and acid-gas coverage. If your hazard is only organic vapour and acid gas, the 6003 is the tighter, cheaper fit. If your environment is a mix that includes ammonia or formaldehyde, the 6006's broader approval is what you need. Pick the narrowest cartridge that actually covers all your hazards.
Is hydrogen sulphide protection for escape or continuous use?
Check the printed NIOSH approval β for some gases on a multi-gas cartridge, hydrogen sulphide among them, the approval can be for escape only rather than continuous work exposure. That is an important distinction: an escape rating means the cartridge is approved to get you out of an atmosphere, not to work in it. Do not assume every gas on the list carries the same continuous-use approval; the label is the authority.
How long does the cartridge last?
There is no fixed hours figure β service life depends on the gas, its concentration, humidity, temperature and your breathing rate. You manage it with a change-out schedule based on your exposure assessment, and you replace on that schedule; any odour, taste or irritation breakthrough instead means leave the contaminated area immediately and investigate. Gas cartridges have no particulate-style breathing-resistance cue, so the schedule matters more than it does for a filter.
What protection factor does it give?
Fitted to a half facepiece it gives an assigned protection factor of 10 β protection up to ten times the OSHA permissible exposure limit for the covered gases. On a quantitatively fit-tested full facepiece that rises to 50 times the PEL. This is rated gas protection, not nuisance-level relief. If your exposure needs more than a factor of 50, you move up to a powered or supplied-air system beyond what any negative-pressure cartridge can give.
Which respirators does it fit?
The 6006 uses the 3M bayonet connection and fits the 3M 6000, 6500, 7500 and 7800S half and full facepieces and the FF-400 Series, plus the 3M Scott AV-3000 SureSeal. It does not fit the Secure Click HF-800 or FF-800 respirators, which use a different push-lock connection and their own cartridges. Keep to the bayonet range on a bayonet facepiece, as NIOSH approval covers the facepiece and cartridge as a tested assembly.
Is it good for formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is on the 6006's approved list, which makes it a valid choice for formaldehyde exposure where the other gases in your environment also fall within its approval. Formaldehyde has poor warning properties β you may not smell breakthrough reliably β so a strict change-out schedule matters especially here rather than relying on odour. Confirm the concentration against the PEL and the protection factor before relying on it.
Can I reuse a cartridge after a break?
Gases already adsorbed can migrate through the sorbent bed during storage, so a partly used gas cartridge does not simply pause. Follow your program's rules on reuse and storage β sealing it in a bag between uses slows but does not stop this, and once a cartridge is near its change-out point it should be replaced rather than stretched. When in doubt, a fresh cartridge is cheap next to a breakthrough exposure.
What does it not protect against?
Anything not on its approval: carbon monoxide, gases outside its list, and all particulate β dust, mist and fume β since it has no filter. It cannot add oxygen, so it is useless in a low-oxygen space, and it must never be used in an atmosphere that is beyond the limits of an air-purifying respirator. A cartridge removes only the specific gases it is approved for from otherwise breathable air; confirm the atmosphere and the hazard first.
Do I replace both cartridges together?
Yes. They are worn as a matched pair and load at the same rate, so a fresh cartridge run against a partly spent one gives uneven breathing resistance and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Change them together on your schedule, and record the change so the next person knows where the pair is in its life. Even wear across the pair keeps the assembly predictable.
