What the 3M Secure Click D3096 P100 Filter Does
The particulate half is the real protection: NIOSH-approved P100 against oil and non-oil airborne particulate, using 3M's Advanced Electrostatic Media — highly charged microfibers in an open formation that capture particles by charge rather than by density alone, so air passes more freely. Combined with the filter's dual-flow shape, that is what makes it noticeably easier to breathe through than a dense mechanical filter. The filters are also flame and water resistant, which matters around hot work and damp environments. 3M lists them for mineral, coal, iron ore, cotton and flour dusts, spray mists, and metal fumes from welding, brazing, and cutting.
The second half is nuisance-level acid gas relief, and 3M is specific about both the gases and the limit: it addresses sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and chlorine at concentrations not exceeding the OSHA PEL or other applicable limit. Here is the clean way to prove that is not real protection: the D3096's NIOSH approval is a particulate filter approval (the TC-21C class), not a gas and vapour cartridge approval (TC-23C). If acid gas could reach or exceed its exposure limit, you need a rated cartridge — the Secure Click D8003 OV/AG, the D80923 OV/AG/P100 combination, or the D8006 multi-gas. Safety note: This is a P100 particulate filter with a nuisance-relief sorbent. The P100 rating is genuine protection against dust, fume, and mist — but the acid gas relief is comfort only, defined by 3M as concentrations not exceeding the OSHA exposure limit, and the filter carries a particulate approval rather than a gas/vapour cartridge approval. It is not rated acid-gas protection: never rely on it for sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, chlorine, or any gas at or above its limit — use a rated gas cartridge instead. As an air-purifying filter it also does not supply oxygen; never use it in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere, which requires a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA. Fit-test the facepiece and wear it clean-shaven, or the filtration does not count.
Platform & Where It Sits in the Line
The D3096 uses the Secure Click push-and-lock connection and fits 3M Secure Click HF-800 half-face and FF-800 full-face respirators. It does not fit 3M bayonet respirators — if you run a 6000, 7500, or FF-400 facepiece, the equivalent bayonet filter is the 3M 2096, which is the same P100-plus-nuisance-acid-gas idea on the older connection. Which acid gases does the nuisance relief cover, and what does "nuisance level" mean?
3M names sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and chlorine for the relief layer. "Nuisance level" has a specific meaning: concentrations that do not exceed the OSHA permissible exposure limit or other applicable government limit, whichever is lower. In other words, the sorbent takes the edge off a smell that is already below the legal exposure limit — it is comfort, not certified gas protection.
How can I tell the acid gas relief isn't rated protection?
Look at the approval class. The D3096 carries a NIOSH particulate filter approval (the TC-21C class), not a gas and vapour cartridge approval (TC-23C). A filter that genuinely protects against acid gas at exposure levels would carry that gas/vapour approval. That difference in approval class — not marketing wording — is the definitive test.
If I have real sulfur dioxide or chlorine exposure, what do I need instead?
A rated gas cartridge on the same Secure Click platform. The D8003 organic vapor and acid gas cartridge covers acid gases at exposure levels, the D80923 adds P100 particulate to that same OV/AG protection in one unit, and the D8006 multi-gas cartridge covers a broader mix. Match the cartridge to a measured contaminant — never substitute a nuisance-relief filter.
What is Advanced Electrostatic Media, and why does it matter?
It is 3M's proprietary filter medium: highly charged microfibers arranged in an open formation. The charge pulls particles onto the fibers rather than relying purely on a dense physical mesh, so the media captures efficiently while still letting air pass more freely. In practice that means P100-level filtration with noticeably easier breathing — helped further by the filter's dual-flow shape.
Are these filters flame and water resistant?
Yes — 3M lists the Secure Click particulate filters as both flame resistant and water resistant. That matters in hot work and damp environments, where an ordinary filter can be degraded by sparks or moisture. It is a durability feature, not a rating that changes what the filter protects against.
How many filters come in a pack?

What is the difference between the D3096 and the 3M 2096?
They are the same idea on two different platforms. The 2096 is the bayonet filter for 3M 6000/7000/FF-400 respirators; the D3096 is the Secure Click filter for HF-800/FF-800 respirators. Both are P100 with nuisance-level acid gas relief. Pick by which facepiece you own — the two connections are not interchangeable.
How does the Secure Click connection differ from a bayonet?
Secure Click filters push straight onto the facepiece port and lock with an audible click, so you get positive confirmation the filter is seated. A bayonet requires aligning and twisting. The click is the point: it reduces the chance of a partially attached filter, which is a real failure mode when people are gloved or in a hurry.
Can I use it for welding fume or mineral dust?
Yes for the particulate side. 3M lists the D3096 for solids from processing minerals, coal, iron ore, cotton, and flour, and for liquid or oil-based particles from sprays and metal fumes produced by welding, brazing, and cutting. If your welding also produces ozone or other gases, remember the P100 does not filter those — add rated gas protection or ventilation.
Does the nuisance relief have an end-of-service-life indicator?
No. There is no ESLI for the nuisance sorbent, so you cannot judge it by odor with any confidence. Replace the filter when breathing resistance rises, when it is damaged or wet, or on your written change schedule — and if odor returns, treat that as a sign the sorbent is spent, not as a safety margin you can lean on.
What does the magenta color coding mean?
Magenta is the NIOSH color code for P100 filters. It is a quick visual confirmation that you have the highest particulate class — at least 99.97% efficiency against oil and non-oil aerosols — rather than an N95 or P95. Colour coding helps a supervisor spot a wrong filter across a shop at a glance.
Can I use it in a confined or low-oxygen space?
No. It is an air-purifying filter — it cleans existing breathable air but cannot add oxygen or protect in an unknown atmosphere. A confined space or a low-oxygen atmosphere requires a supplied-air respirator, and any exposure at immediately dangerous levels requires supplied air regardless of the filter.
