"Adequate and suitable": the two-word selection test

HSE's HSG53 compresses all of RPE selection into two words, and they generalize worldwide:

  • Adequate โ€” enough protection for the hazard and concentration. Fit, facial hair, and the daily habits

Every tight-fitting device in the family tree โ€” disposable through full-face โ€” depends on the seal, which is why all six jurisdictions require fit testing for occupational use and why fit failure quietly erases paper protection. The wearer's two daily habits are correct donning and the user seal check before every entry. Worked example: selecting RPE for a concrete-grinding task

  1. Characterize the hazard. Concrete grinding = respirable crystalline silica; check the measured or task-assumed exposure against the limit โ€” the silica standard guide maps common tasks.
