Short answer: EN 149 — in full, EN 149:2001+A1:2009 — is the European standard for disposable filtering half masks, and it grades them FFP1 (≥80% filtration), FFP2 (≥94%), and FFP3 (≥99%), tested at 95 L/min against both sodium-chloride and paraffin-oil aerosols. Its sibling EN 143 grades the replaceable particulate filters used on elastomeric facepieces P1, P2, and P3 (≥99.95%). Every legitimate European respirator carries a CE mark, a four-digit notified-body number, and the standard reference on the product itself — and under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, respiratory protection is Category III PPE, the highest conformity tier.

Why this matters.
Respiratory protective equipment sits in Category III of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 — the "risks that may cause very serious consequences such as death or irreversible damage to health" tier — which is why every FFP mask must pass EU type-examination by a notified body and ongoing production surveillance. A mask marked only "FFP2" with no CE mark and no four-digit notified-body number is not a certified respirator, and the pandemic years demonstrated how much uncertified product circulates when demand spikes. Reading the marking string is the buyer's single best defense.

FFP1, FFP2, FFP3: the classes decoded
EN 149 tests filtration at 95 L/min with two aerosols — sodium chloride and paraffin oil — and adds a total-inward-leakage (TIL) requirement per class that folds fit, valve leakage, and filter penetration into one number. That TIL ceiling is the structural difference from NIOSH, which certifies filtration and handles fit through workplace fit testing.

The NR, R, and D suffixes
After the class, EN 149 masks carry NR (non-reusable — single shift only) or R (reusable across shifts, cleanable per the manufacturer), and optionally D, meaning the mask passed the dolomite-dust clogging test and stays breathable in heavy dust exposure. "FFP2 NR D" is therefore a single-shift FFP2 with proven clogging resistance. Marking anatomy: reading a European mask

EN 143 particulate filters and EN 14387 gas filters
Elastomeric facepieces under EN 140 (half) and EN 136 (full face) take screw-on or bayonet filters certified separately. Particulate filters under EN 143 run P1 (≥80%), P2 (≥94%), and P3 (≥99.95%) — the P3 being the European counterpart of the P100 filters reviewed across our 3M cartridge guide. Gas filters under EN 14387 use letter types and colors: A (brown, organic vapors), B (grey, inorganic gases), E (yellow, acid gases), K (green, ammonia), plus combined types like ABEK, each in capacity classes 1–3. Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and how to verify a purchase
The PPE Regulation replaced the old PPE Directive in 2018 and put RPE in Category III, which brings the strictest conformity route: EU type-examination (Module B) by a notified body plus ongoing conformity — either supervised product checks (Module C2) or a quality-system audit (Module D) — and a signed EU Declaration of Conformity the manufacturer must make available. To verify a European mask before trusting it:
- Read the marking string on the mask itself — CE, four-digit notified-body number, EN 149 reference, class and suffix, per the decode table above.
- Look up the notified body — the four-digit number must resolve to a body scoped for PPE in the EU's NANDO database.
- Request the Declaration of Conformity — legitimate suppliers provide it; its absence on a Category III product is disqualifying.
- Check packaging coherence — class on mask, box, and instructions must agree, in the languages of the market of sale.
Mapping EN classes to NIOSH
The working equivalences: FFP2 ≈ N95 (94% vs 95%), FFP3 ≈ N99 on filtration (99%) with no true disposable NIOSH P100 counterpart, and EN 143 P3 ≈ P100 (99.95% vs 99.97%) on elastomerics. Safety note: EN 529 draws the same hard boundary as every other system in this hub — filtering devices, FFP1 through P3, are never used in oxygen-deficient atmospheres or IDLH-level concentrations, which belong exclusively to supplied-air and SCBA equipment selected by a competent professional.
