What the GVS Elipse SPR321 P100 Replacement Filters Are

They are the P100 particulate replacement filters for the GVS Elipse half-mask system, sold as a matched pair and NIOSH-approved under TC-84A-6949 to capture at least 99.97% of solid and liquid aerosols, oil and non-oil alike. The Elipse filters exist to solve a specific annoyance: traditional twin cartridges stick out on either side of the jaw, clipping your peripheral vision and fouling on goggles, face shields and tight spaces. The SPR321's encapsulated media is thinner and more flexible, so it hugs the face and keeps your sightline clear — which is why the Elipse is popular for detailed bench work, spraying, and anywhere a wide field of view matters. What the slim design does not change is the underlying protection class. This is still a P100 particulate filter — it captures fine dusts, mists and fumes to 99.97%, and it does nothing about gases or vapours, low profile or not. It is not a substitute for a gas cartridge where solvent, acid gas or odour is present, and it does not last longer for being encapsulated; you still replace it on breathing resistance and damage. Which masks does the SPR321 fit?

GVS makes other Elipse filters that add nuisance-level relief, but this is not one of them — it is the straightforward particulate filter. If your hazard includes solvent odour or gases, you need a gas-capable filter or cartridge, not this one.

What does the 5-year figure mean?

That is the shelf life of the unopened filter, not how long it lasts in use. A sealed SPR321 stays good for up to five years from manufacture; once you are wearing it, its working life depends on how loaded it gets — dust, humidity and hours of use. Do not read five years as in-service life. Store sealed filters cool and dry, and judge in-use filters by breathing resistance, not by the shelf-life date.

Does one pair fit both mask sizes?

Yes. The SPR321 pair fits both the S/M and the M/L Elipse masks — the filter is common across the size range, and only the facepiece differs by size. That keeps stocking simple: you buy the filter to the mask model, not to the size. It is sold as a matched pair because the Elipse wears two filters, one each side.

Is it latex and silicone free?

Yes — the Elipse system, filters included, is latex and silicone free, which matters for wearers with latex sensitivity and for clean environments where silicone transfer is a problem, such as some paint and coating work. The facepiece is a lightweight TPE. If latex sensitivity is a concern on your crew, the Elipse platform is built to avoid it.

Can I use it on a 3M or other-brand mask?

No. The SPR321 is designed and NIOSH-approved as part of the GVS Elipse assembly, and it does not fit 3M bayonet, 3M Secure Click, or other manufacturers' respirators. NIOSH approval covers the mask and filter as a tested pair, so mixing a GVS filter onto another brand's facepiece — even if it seemed to seat — would fall outside the approval and cannot be relied on. When should the filters be replaced?

Replace them on a noticeable rise in breathing resistance as they load, on any damage to the filter or its housing, or on your workplace change schedule — whichever comes first. Like any particulate filter there is no end-of-service-life indicator and no odour breakthrough to warn you, so increasing breathing effort is your main in-use cue. Can I wash or blow out a loaded filter?

No. Washing soaks the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or tears channels through it, and either way the NIOSH P100 approval no longer holds. The encapsulated housing protects the media in use, but it does not make the filter cleanable. Filters are consumables — replace a loaded pair rather than trying to recover it, however lightly used it looks.

What is P100, and does it stop gases?

P100 is the highest particulate filter class, capturing at least 99.97% of airborne particles including oil-based aerosols — it is the right class for lead, silica, asbestos, mold and fine dusts. It does not stop gases or vapours of any kind, including carbon monoxide and solvent vapour, because it is a particulate filter with no sorbent. For a gas or vapour hazard you need a gas-capable filter or cartridge, not a P100.

Do both filters get replaced together?

Yes. The Elipse wears two filters and they load at the same rate, so replacing one while leaving the other gives uneven breathing resistance and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Change the pair together on your schedule so the mask breathes evenly and you always know where both filters are in their life.

What does it not protect against?

Gases and vapours of any kind — it is particulate only — and it cannot add oxygen, so it is no use in a low-oxygen space and must never be worn in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health. It protects only as well as the mask seals, so a fit test and a clean-shaven seal are prerequisites. It is one part of a respiratory program, matched to a particulate hazard, not a universal filter.
