Janitorial Safety Checklist: Daily, Weekly and Monthly Custodial Checks (2026)

Short answer: a janitorial safety checklist should be organised by cadence, not by room โ€” daily checks that protect the person working the shift, weekly checks that catch drift, and monthly checks that keep the paperwork defensible. Every line below carries the OSHA standard it comes from, because a checklist item nobody can trace gets skipped first.

Custodial work concentrates four OSHA-recognised hazard families into one job: walking and working surfaces, hazard communication, bloodborne pathogens, and ergonomic strain. A checklist that only lists cleaning tasks misses all four. The version below is built for the person supervising a crew โ€” if you are inspecting the building itself rather than the shift, use the facility safety checklist instead.

Why this matters.
Slips, trips and falls are the signature custodial injury, and the surface being cleaned is the surface causing them. OSHA 1910.22(a)(2) requires walking-working surfaces to be kept clean, orderly and dry so far as possible โ€” which means the wet floor a crew creates is the crew's hazard to control while it exists, not after.

Part 1 โ€” Start of shift

Six checks, before the cart moves. These are the ones that fail quietly: the missing goggles nobody noticed, the sign left in the van.

The PPE column is the one most often filled in from habit. If you want it derived from the actual task rather than from memory, run the tasks through the OSHA PPE hazard assessment tool and keep the printout with the written certification.

Part 2 โ€” Chemicals and labels

  1. Every secondary container is labelled. A spray bottle filled from a concentrate is a secondary container and generally needs the product identifier and hazard information under 1910.1200(f)(6). The one narrow exception is immediate use โ€” a portable container filled and used entirely by the employee who filled it, within that work shift. Unlabelled secondary containers are a common and easily spotted HazCom failure in cleaning operations.
  2. Dilution is measured, not eyeballed. Over-concentration is a chemical burn risk and wastes product; under-concentration silently voids the disinfectant claim.
  3. Nothing is mixed. Bleach with an acid or an ammonia-based cleaner produces chlorine or chloramine gas. The rule is one product at a time, rinse between.
  4. Safety data sheets are reachable on shift. Not in a binder in a locked office โ€” reachable by the person using the product, while they are using it.
  5. Gloves match the chemical. Disposable nitrile handles routine cleaning; immersion or aggressive solvents need a chemical-resistant glove chosen on breakthrough time.

Part 3 โ€” Floor care and signage

29 CFR 1910.22 requires walking-working surfaces to be kept free of hazards such as spills and dry so far as feasible. It does not name wet floor signs. Signage is the accepted control for a floor you have deliberately made wet, and OSHAโ€™s own slips and falls guidance treats warning signs that way โ€” but the requirement is the dry, hazard-free surface, not the sign.

Part 4 โ€” Restroom and waste

This is where custodial work meets sharps and body fluids, and where the checklist stops being about cleaning.

  1. Never press down on a waste bag. It is a frequent route to a needlestick in building services.
  2. Sharps come up with tools. Tongs, forceps or a dustpan and brush, into a puncture-resistant container โ€” never a gloved hand.
  3. Blood or body fluids trigger the other procedure. Stop, barrier the area, and run the bloodborne protocol rather than the cleaning routine.
  4. Liners rated for the load. A bag that splits mid-carry puts the contents against the legs of the person carrying it.
  5. Hands washed after gloves come off. Required immediately or as soon as feasible under 1910.1030(d)(2)(v).

Part 7 โ€” Worked example: one restroom route

A single evening restroom route, run against the checklist:

  1. Before the cart moves. Gloves and sealed goggles on the cart, two wet floor signs at each end of the corridor, disinfectant already diluted and labelled, body-fluid kit sealed and present.
  2. Entering. Signs out first, both doors. The route is closed before the first surface is touched.
  3. Waste first, by hand-free method. Liner lifted and tied without compressing; nothing reached into. Anything sharp goes to tools, not fingers.
  4. Fixtures, then floor. Bowl cleaner and disinfectant never in the same pass; contact time observed off the label rather than guessed.
  5. If blood appears at any point. Stop the route. Barrier it, switch to the bloodborne procedure, and only resume cleaning once the area is decontaminated.
  6. Close-out. Floor dry, signs collected, gloves off, hands washed, kit restocked before the cart is parked.

Is a monthly eyewash check enough?

ANSI Z358.1 is the design and maintenance reference and calls for weekly activation of plumbed units, with an annual full inspection; monthly is a common shortcut that does not match it. Bottle stations are supplementary only and never a substitute for a compliant unit.

Who is responsible for a contractor cleaning crew's safety?

Both parties, in practice. The employer of record owes training, PPE and the written programs; the host facility owes the hazard information about its own building. Contracts that leave this vague are where it fails.

Should the checklist be signed?
