How do you store incompatible chemicals safely?
Short answer: You separate them by hazard class, and you take the rules from each chemical's own safety data sheet rather than from a federal table โ because OSHA does not publish a general chemical-segregation matrix. The one explicit segregation rule in 29 CFR 1910.106 is at paragraph (d)(7)(iv): materials that will react with water shall not be stored in the same room with flammable liquids. Why this matters.
Incompatible storage is the rare hazard that does nothing at all until it does everything at once. A bleach concentrate and an acidic descaler can sit on the same shelf for years without incident โ until one leaks, or someone decants both into the same bucket, and the reaction generates chlorine gas in an enclosed closet with no ventilation and no eyewash. The controls that prevent this cost almost nothing: a shelf reassignment, a secondary containment tray, and a chemical list that was actually walked past the storage area.
What the standards actually require
There is no single federal chemical-segregation standard. What exists is a set of narrower obligations that, taken together, produce a segregation duty:
Flammable liquid storage โ 1910.106
Paragraph (d)(3)(i) limits what a storage cabinet may hold: not more than 60 gallons of Category 1, 2 or 3 flammable liquids, nor more than 120 gallons of Category 4 flammable liquids. The hazard communication standard does not prescribe shelf layout, but it requires you to maintain a list of the hazardous chemicals present and to train employees on their hazards and on protective measures. Segregation is physical, not alphabetical
The most common storage error in small facilities is arranging chemicals alphabetically, which reliably places incompatible materials beside each other. Effective segregation uses one or more of the following, in rough order of strength:
- Separate rooms โ the only option where a standard requires it, as with water-reactives and flammable liquids.
- Separate cabinets โ flammables in a rated cabinet, corrosives in a dedicated corrosive cabinet.
- Separate secondary containment โ trays or bins that keep a leak inside one hazard class rather than letting it reach another.
- Vertical rules โ never store a corrosive above eye level, and never store anything above a chemical it reacts with, because leaks travel downward.
- Physical distance plus labelling โ the weakest control, and adequate only for low-hazard pairs.

Running a segregation walk that finds things
- Bring the chemical list, not your memory. The list from your written program is the only complete inventory you have.
- Open every door. Closets, under sinks, mezzanines, contractor lockers and the back of the maintenance shop.
- Record what is beside, above and below each container. Vertical adjacency matters as much as horizontal.
- Pull Section 7 and Section 10 for anything you are unsure about. The sheet names the incompatibility, not a generic chart.
- Check for the two cleaning-product pairs first. Bleach with acid, bleach with ammonia โ these are the highest-frequency findings in ordinary facilities.
- Verify containment under corrosives and flammables. A leak with nowhere to go finds the next shelf.

Decanting is where storage becomes exposure.
