It is not a filter — a common and costly misunderstanding

The 815392 is a retaining ring. It contains no filtration media. A worker wearing an MSA Advantage respirator with a 815392 Cover installed but no disc loaded is breathing completely unfiltered air through the open inlet port. This misunderstanding happens more often than it should — particularly when a program orders covers without discs, or when a worker removes a loaded disc for comfort and re-snaps the empty cover. The cover and disc must always be used together.

Not oil-rated and not interchangeable with the 815401 R95 Cover

Despite their similar appearance, the 815392 N95 Cover and the MSA 815401 R95 Cover are distinct SKUs designed for different disc specifications. The N95 Cover is not designed for use with R95 discs, and the R95 Cover is not designed for use with N95 discs. In oily environments, only the 815401 R95 Cover with 815397 R95 discs provides the correct oil-resistant assembly. Using the 815392 in an oily environment — even with N95 discs — does not upgrade the system to oil-resistant status.

Inspection and replacement burden at every disc change

The 815392 should be visually inspected at every disc change for cracks, warping, or deformation of the snap-lock mechanism. A damaged cover can allow the disc to shift or gap during use, breaking the filter seal. Understanding the MSA Advantage two-part snap-on architecture

The MSA Advantage snap-on prefilter system uses a two-component architecture that differs from traditional respirator cartridge designs. Classic cartridges (like the MSA Advantage GMA OV cartridge) are self-contained — they mount directly to the respirator facepiece and contain all filtration media within the cartridge body. N, R and P — and why the R class has a clock on it

Particulate filters are approved under 42 CFR 84 with a letter and a number. The number is efficiency against the most-penetrating particle size: 95 means 95 percent, 100 means 99.97. The letter describes behavior in oil aerosols, and it is the part that decides whether a filter is legal for your process at all.

N is not resistant to oil and must not be used where oil aerosols are present at all — cutting fluids, machining mists, some paints and coatings. P is oil proof, with no oil-related time restriction beyond the manufacturer’s guidance. R sits between them and carries the limitation people most often miss: an R-class filter is oil resistant but is restricted to a single shift of use when oil aerosols are present. It is not a filter you run for a week in oil mist because it still breathes freely. Where oil exposure is routine rather than occasional, a P-class filter is the one that avoids the single-shift bookkeeping altogether.

Two limits apply whatever the letter. A half facepiece air-purifying respirator has an Assigned Protection Factor of 10 under OSHA 1910.134 Table 1, and a full facepiece 50. And no air-purifying respirator may be used in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere — filtering particles adds no oxygen and does nothing about gases or vapors, so a particulate filter alone is never the answer where a gas hazard exists.

How the snap-on cover and prefilter work together

The Advantage particulate system is two parts, and confusing them is the most common ordering mistake. The reusable snap-on cover is a holder: it clips onto the facepiece and retains a prefilter pad. It is not filter media and it provides no respiratory protection by itself. The prefilter is the consumable that does the filtering, and it needs its cover to mount — a pad on its own is not a working assembly.

Two practical consequences. First, the classes have to match: an N95 prefilter belongs in the N95 cover and an R95 prefilter in the R95 cover, and the approval covers the combination rather than either piece alone. Second, the cover and the pad wear on different schedules — the cover is reusable and inspected for cracks, distortion and a clean seating surface, while the pad is a consumable replaced on increased breathing resistance, damage, soiling or, for an R-class pad in oil aerosols, at the end of the shift. Advantage and Comfo are two different systems

MSA runs two respirator platforms that look similar and do not interchange. The Advantage facepieces — 200 LS, 420, 900 and the full-face 1000, 3200 and 4100 — take snap-on, bayonet-style media that lock with a single twist, which is what the filters and covers on this page are. The Comfo line takes threaded GM-series cartridges instead. Neither fits the other, and no adapter makes the combination approved.

This matters more than convenience, because a NIOSH approval covers a complete assembly — a specific facepiece with specific media. Putting Advantage media on a Comfo facepiece, or a Comfo cartridge on an Advantage facepiece, takes the respirator outside its approval even if the parts engage, which means it is no longer NIOSH-approved equipment for the purposes of OSHA 1910.134. Where a program runs both platforms, keep the stores physically separate: a shared bin is the most common way the wrong media reaches a face.

What has to be in place before anyone wears this

A respirator is the one piece of PPE that comes with a program attached. Where respirators are required, OSHA 1910.134 obliges the employer to run a written respiratory protection program with a named administrator, and four elements govern whether the equipment on this page will actually protect the person wearing it.

Medical evaluation comes first. Under 1910.134(e), a worker must be medically evaluated — using the Appendix C questionnaire or an equivalent examination — before fit testing or use, because breathing through a respirator imposes real physiological load. Fit testing is annual and model-specific under 1910.134(f): a passing test on one make, model and size does not transfer to another, so changing facepiece or size means testing again. Facial hair that crosses the sealing surface prohibits use — this is not a grooming preference but a seal failure, and no amount of strap tension compensates. And a user seal check goes on every single donning, per Appendix B-1, which takes seconds and is the only check that happens at the moment of use. Cartridge and filter selection follows from air monitoring and a hazard assessment; where the contaminant or its concentration is unknown, the answer is not a better cartridge.
