1. Measure the gap, loaded. A trailer settles as it fills and lifts as it empties. Measure the worst case, not the empty one, and add margin so the plate never sits with only an inch of bearing on the trailer lip.

A steeper grade also means more force trying to push the plate out of position, which is why securing it matters more as the step gets bigger.
Can one person carry a dock plate safely?
The small ones, yes; the large ones, no, and 1910.26(e) requires portable dockboards to be "equipped with handholds or other means to permit safe handling" precisely because this is where dock injuries happen. Most plates here have a handle on each side for two-person lifting; the steel board has a lifting chain so a forklift moves it. If a plate is routinely being dragged rather than lifted, it is the wrong size for the crew.
How thick should a dock plate be?
Thickness is one of the inputs to the rating rather than a spec to shop on alone, and few manufacturers publish it. Where they do, it is useful for comparing like with like: the Vestil E-3624 is 3/8 in and the VNN plate is 0.42 in. Compare the published capacity at your span first; use thickness to break a tie.
When should a dock plate be taken out of service?
When a curb is bent, cracked or detached, when a leg is deformed or missing, when the deck is cracked or permanently bowed, or when a weld has failed. The curb is not cosmetic — it is the feature 1910.26(b)(1) is about, so a damaged curb takes the plate out of service even if the deck looks fine. Do not straighten and return a bent aluminium plate to service; the metal has already yielded once.
Does 1910.26 apply to a plate we have owned for years?
Paragraphs (a), (c), (d) and (e) apply to any dockboard in use. Only the run-off protection requirement at (b)(1) is dated, applying to dockboards "put into initial service on or after January 17, 2017" — so an older plate without curbs is not automatically non-compliant, though the general duty to prevent a foreseeable run-off does not disappear. Anything you buy now is squarely inside (b)(1).
Dock plate or dock leveller — when do you need the permanent version?
When the height difference exceeds what a portable plate covers, when the dock runs continuously and a plate would be placed and lifted dozens of times a shift, or when forklift traffic is constant. The portable plates here handle roughly 1 to 5 in of difference and the steel board up to 7 in. Past that, a leveller is an installed piece of building equipment and an engineering decision, not a purchase off a shelf.
What else belongs on the dock alongside the plate?
Chocks or a trailer restraint for 1910.26(d), marked and clear aisles under 1910.176(a) where the racking begins, safety-toe footwear because the injury a dock produces is a crushed foot, and a stocked kit — first aid kits for warehouses covers what a dock should hold.
