How do you wrap a pallet with stretch wrap?

How to wrap a pallet (2026)

Why this matters.

What stretch wrap does and does not do

Stretch film is elastic polyethylene that recovers after stretching - that recovery is the containment force holding cartons together. A well-wrapped pallet resists the sway of travel and the bump of the dock plate as a single unit.

What it does not do: hold a pallet to a truck. In transit, securement is the tie-down's job, governed by FMCSA working-load-limit rules - aggregate WLL of at least 50 percent of cargo weight, from rated straps on rated anchor points. Stack the load before you touch the film

No wrap pattern rescues a bad stack:

  • Heavy low. Densest cartons on the bottom tier - the same logic the NIOSH lifting equation applies to bodies applies to loads: high mass up high multiplies every tip force.
  • Inside the footprint. Overhang concentrates edge damage, defeats column strength, and catches on racking. Keep every carton on the deck.
  • Brick the tiers. Alternate carton orientation layer to layer like brickwork so seams do not line up into a shear plane.
  • Flat top. A level top tier lets you cap the load and gives the top wraps something to bind.

Anchor and base wraps: lock the load to the pallet

Tie or tuck the film tail around a pallet corner block or press a fist-sized wad of film against the first carton corner and wrap over it - both anchor the start without knots.

Then make two to three base wraps that catch the pallet deck itself - the film must bind cartons to pallet, not just cartons to cartons. Keep the film above the fork openings so the jack can still enter. A load wrapped only to itself slides off the deck as a unit; the base wraps are the difference.

The spiral: overlap, tension, and the top

Walk the roll around the pallet, spiraling upward with about 50 percent overlap on each pass - every band of film crossed by the next. Keep steady tension: stretch the film as you go (hand film works at roughly 10-20 percent stretch; the elastic recovery is the containment force). Pull hard enough that the film bites, not so hard it necks down to a rope or crushes carton corners.

  • Walk forward around the pallet at a steady pace rather than shuffling backwards - backwards laps are the dizziness-and-trip pattern.
  • At the top, make two full wraps at the highest tier; for loose top cartons, a corner-to-corner X over the top locks them down.
  • Spiral back down to the middle and finish: tear the film, stretch the tail thin, and press it flat onto a wrapped face - it welds to itself.

Film gauge: the decode

Hand film vs machine film, and when to automate

Hand film is formulated to stretch under arm power; machine film is stiffer and reaches its containment force only on a powered carousel that pre-stretches it far further. Running machine film by hand delivers a fraction of its design containment - buy the film for the method you actually use.

The changeover signal is volume and shoulders: wrapping is repetitive trunk-twisting work, and a crew wrapping dozens of pallets a shift is a crew whose task design the ergonomics reference says to mechanize. Special cases: rain, cold, labels, and the trailer

  • Weather: stretch film sheds splash but is not waterproofing - top caps or covers handle standing rain. UV exposure degrades standard film over weeks outdoors.
  • Cold: film gets stiffer and less tacky below freezing; store rolls warm and expect more effort per wrap in a freezer or winter dock.
  • Labels out: place shipping labels on a flat carton face and wrap over them with a single clear layer at most - black or opaque film hides contents and labels alike, which is its purpose for theft-deterrence and its problem for receiving.

Worked example: wrapping a 1,000 lb mixed-carton pallet

A shipping crew unitizes a 1,000 lb GMA pallet of mixed cartons for LTL freight using the RAZCC 60-gauge industrial hand film.
