Moldex 6683 Softies Jar Cordless Earplugs Overview

The Moldex 6683 Softies Jar Cordless Earplugs are cordless reusable flanged ear plugs from Moldex, rated NRR 33 dB. With no cord to catch or snag, they keep a low profile for tight and confined spaces β€” the most economical choice for high-volume single-use. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The Moldex 6683 Softies Jar belong to the cordless ear plugs range and the NRR 33 ear plugs group. They are reusable and washable across many shifts; for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 33 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 33 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~82 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~87 dBA after derating Good fit
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~77 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the Moldex 6683 Softies Jar?

Buy them if you want reusable flanged hearing protection in a low-profile uncorded design at NRR 33 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare 6430 Alphas, 6450 Jetz, 6598 BattlePlugs. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The Moldex 6683 Softies Jar reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Industrial & construction noise

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a low-profile uncorded NRR 33 plug that won’t snag in tight spaces.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

Very best earplugs that I've tested
I absolutely don't tolerate any noise when going to sleep, and my hearing is very good, so I am using earplugs all the time. I've been using Hearos Xtreme Protection NRR 33dB for years. This year I started to run out of my stock, so I decided to perform a test of earpugs of different manufacturers. I've tested Moldex Softies "Drift to sleep", Moldex 6800 Pura Fit, 3M E-A-RSoft Yellow Neons and Hearos Xtreme Protection, all NRR 33dB. It turned out that these earplugs - Moldex Softies - are the very best at blocking sound. Sorted by blocking sound efficiency: Softies are best , 6800 Pura Fit are just a bit worse, then come 3M Yellow Neons, then Hearos Xtreme Protection which are the worst. Now, all of these are actually very good, and even I can go to sleep with any of them, yet some are still better than others at blocking sound. All of these were comfortable for my ears, none too large (Moldex Softies are quite large but it causes no problems for me) or too small (3M Yellow Neons are smaller than others I tested but it doesn't stop them from blocking sound very well), all are sufficiently soft and usually stay in place during sleep.

Good noise reduction, and comfortable enough to wear them all night.
I needed earplugs due to noisy neighbors. I tried different ones (including Mack's Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs, Flents Quiet Please, and some Hearos earplugs), but the Drift to Sleep are definitely the best so far.The Flents appealed to me because they are shorter, and I sleep on my side, so I figured they would be more comfortable, and I was wondering if the Drift to Sleep might be too long - but in reality, their length is not a problem at all. In fact, they are the most comfortable earplugs I have tried so far. With other earplugs, my ear canals would hurt in the mornings, but not with the Drift to Sleep. All else being equal, if you make earplugs shorter, you have to make them more dense in order to achieve the same level of noise reduction - and making them more dense increases their firmness, which makes them less comfortable. The Drift to Sleep strike a perfect balance. The level of noise reduction is excellent for my situation, that is, to block out the noise from upstairs neighbors who occasionally drop things on the hardwood floor. Normally, this would wake me up every time, but with the Drift to Sleep I don't hear this noise anymore - and in the rare event that I do hear something, it's so soft and distant that it doesn't bother me at all. But I can still hear my alarm clock in the mornings. Perfect.A little side tip for you: I use an iPhone app called "Progressive Alarm Clock" (by Spotlight Six Software) - you can choose from different Tibetan singing bowls, and the app wakes you up gently: it starts out very soft and then gradually gets louder and more frequent. There are a number of different patterns you can choose from. And for peace of mind, it has a "sure wake" feature that is pretty much guaranteed to wake you up if everything else didn't. Check the app out, it's great. So much better than the usual alarm clocks that give you a heart attack. (By the way, I am not affiliated with the developers in any way. Just a happy user.)Can you get cheaper earplugs than the Drift to Sleep? Sure. But these work great and are very comfortable - I don't know about you, but that's worth it to me. And let me tell you: you can easily use them for multiple days. I've tried it. They remain comfortable, and the noise reduction remains the same. I recommend you try them out and see for yourself. I haven't looked back since I've discovered the Drift to Sleep. One last thing: I could have sworn that when I bought these (on 3/17/2016), the Amazon listing said they have a noise reduction rating (NRR) of 29 dB. Because I remember thinking to myself "Hm, they have a different shape and length than the Flents Quiet Please, yet they have the same NRR. I wonder how they compare in terms of comfort of wearing." - the box they came in and the package insert don't specify the NRR, so I can't verify that they have a NRR of 29 dB. Maybe I'm wrong. But I noticed that one of the images on the Amazon listing now says they have a NRR of 33 dB. Now, if I am NOT wrong, and they DID have a NRR of 29 dB, and now they have changed the earplugs to bring them to a NRR of 33 dB, then obviously I can't tell you if this has changed anything about how comfortable they are. Mine are great, that's all I can say.I hope this review was helpful!

Had to cut to fit
Update: I cut the top third off and tried again. This time, they fit better and didn't hang halfway out of my ears, so helped me sleep comfortably. If most earplugs are too big, it may be just that they're too long and need cutting.Original review before cutting them: I was hopeful after reading other reviews that this would be helpful. I wake up to the slightest noise, and then can't get back to sleep for hours. My husband snores, we have a cat who is active at night, and we live in a city, so I frequently am awoken and just lie there forever. I'm exhausted the next day.I recently went to a concert and got a pair of disposable ear plugs (not this brand) from the venue. I wore them at night and I SLEPT. Nothing woke me up. I wore them the next 3 nights and slept the whole time (!!), but my ears were a little sore, so I looked at other options and ordered this large pack of earbuds because they were soft yet promised to be effective. These earbuds had reviews and a description that specifically said they were great for sleeping and blocking noises such as snoring. They also said that yes, they look large, but they really squish and are comfortable. Well. I guess they squish, but they also hang way out of my ear no matter how I twist and re-insert them (which I did multiple times through the night). They blocked very little sound for the discomfort of having something huge and fluffy stuffed in my ears. I heard the distant train whistle outside. I heard my husband snore and yawn and rustle the sheets. I heard my cat hunting for treats with the whisper click of his little nails. I heard the cat purr when he settled in next to me. I heard the songbirds start to sing at dawn, when I finally gave up trying to sleep and decided I'd track down the brand of earplugs that the concert venue used that actually work.

Perfect ear plugs!
I live in the first floor of my apartment complex and unfortunately they placed a single mom with kids above our unit. (Thought they would ideally put them on bottom floors?) anyways, while I never hear any voices, I hear the toddler who has heavy feet running around the apartment, when he drops something heavy, and he literally comes off like he’s on speed or something because this goes on all night sometimes. Irritating to my father so I offered him these ear plugs because they work great for me but he can’t sleep with anything in his ears. I put these on right when I go to sleep and I barely even hear our central AC. Hell, I can’t even hear when my dad calls me outside my door. He literally has to knock pretty hard on my door to get my attention. I think these have the highest dbl canceling level so just be aware of that if u have babies and wonder why u can never hear them. LoL I love these as it does it’s purpose. I always have my phone on silent so that’s not a problem but my dad and I have walkie talkies I just bought for when he needs me, he can just page me thru it but it’s been a couple nights that he’s called me thru the walkie, and I don’t hear him! So use caution. I’m gonna try to use just one in my right ear since I sleep on my left to see if it’s enough to let me sleep but enough to hear for any emergencies. But yes, these are definitely worth the price (not expensive at all). Don’t go with name brand ones as they don’t work as well as I’ve tried them all. And the fact that they’re purple is a plus! Just make sure to twist them them enough and pull down ur ear lobe for proper installation into ur ear canal. It says to pull them up but pulling the lobe down while inserting, makes a difference. Sleep well my friends!

GREAT earplugs! My new go-to. Now I can sleep! --Review Updated!
I was desperate for good earplugs. I've always had a hard time getting to sleep & staying asleep, but it got worse when I got married and had another human sleeping in the same bed. Sometimes my husband snores, sometimes he squalls, sometimes he just plain breathes weird, and then sometimes our dog decides that the best way to spend the nighttime hours is running back & forth in the yard, barking as hard & as loudly as possible. I had tried a few other kinds of earplugs; one that was perfect but got discontinued, one that worked well until I started having an allergic reaction to the material they were made of, and a few that didn't block out noise at all. I found these and tried them out of sheer desperation. I was very pleased. They block out the barking dog and the snoring and squalling noises my husband sometimes makes. Sometimes the softer noises still get through, like weird breathing (which I've also noticed in most other earplugs that I've tried, too), but really they block almost all of the nerve-wracking nighttime sounds that drive you nuts. So effective that once or twice I didn't even hear my alarm going off (that's very rare though, not something to be concerned about). Seem to be made of very good materials (no reactions in my ears), they compress & expand nicely, and are good to reuse multiple times. One of the best earplugs you can buy! So glad I found these.Bought a second time because I ran out and these were the only earplugs I wanted. Thank goodness they're still fantastic. NO decrease in quality. Will definitely purchase AGAIN when I'm out. Highly recommend!

Much softer and more comfortable than other Moldex earplugs
I’ve used Moldex earplugs before (the colorful ones), and those were more dense and firm. These are completely different β€” much softer and more comfortable to wear, especially for longer periods. They expand gently and don’t put pressure in the ear, which makes a big difference when sleeping. I can barely feel them once they’re in. At the same time, they still block noise really well.If you didn’t like the firmer Moldex version, definitely try these β€” they’re much more comfortable. I’ll be sticking with this version from now on.
