Howard Leight Quiet QD1 Cordless Earplugs, NRR 26 (Reusable No-Roll) Overview

The Howard Leight Quiet QD1 cordless earplugs are a washable, reusable pre-molded plug rated NRR 26 in the US β€” a quick, clean alternative to rolling foam. Under OSHA 1910.95, hearing protection is required when noise reaches an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA, and a reusable plug like this is a low-waste way to meet that day after day.

As reusable no-roll earplugs, the QD1's design is the draw: a contoured bell shape with a patented no-roll design and a built-in insertion stem, so you hold the stem and push it in rather than rolling and waiting for foam to expand. These Quiet NRR 26 earplugs are washable earplugs β€” clean them with mild soap and water β€” and with proper care they last roughly 2 to 4 weeks of daily use.

Like any item in hearing protection, match the plug to your measured noise exposure and to how you work. As uncorded reusable earplugs the QD1 avoids a cord that could snag; the same Quiet plug is sold corded as the QD30. Compare this reusable earplug against other cordless plugs and weigh reusable versus disposable in our hearing guides before ordering.

What These Quiet QD1 Earplugs Are Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
In-and-out of noise zones Purpose-built No-roll insertion is quick and clean each time you re-enter noise.
Daily reuse / lower waste Strong Washable and reusable for about 2 to 4 weeks, cutting single-use foam.
Dirty hands / clean insertion Strong The stem lets you insert without touching the sealing surface.
Snag-risk areas (moving equipment) Good Uncorded avoids a cord catching; choose the corded QD30 to avoid drops.
Highest attenuation for extreme noise Consider foam NRR 26 is solid; a well-fitted foam plug can rate higher.

Hearing protection only works when it fits. The labeled NRR is a laboratory value that overstates real-world attenuation, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it β€” a common method subtracts 7 from the NRR and halves the remainder when estimating protection against a time-weighted average exposure. Wear hearing protection whenever noise reaches an 8-hour TWA of 85 dBA under OSHA 1910.95, push the no-roll plug in by its stem until it seals, wash and inspect reusable plugs regularly, replace them when they harden or no longer seal, and use dual protection (plugs plus muffs) only per your safety program for very high noise. Learn more in what NRR means and foam vs reusable ear plugs.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Reusable and washable β€” lower waste and cost over time
  • Patented no-roll bell shape with a built-in insertion stem
  • Quick, clean insertion without rolling foam
  • NRR 26 attenuation in a pre-molded reusable plug
  • Uncorded to avoid snags (corded QD30 also available)
Cons
  • NRR 26 is lower than a well-fitted foam plug for extreme noise
  • Needs cleaning and periodic replacement (about 2 to 4 weeks)
  • Uncorded β€” easier to drop than the corded QD30
  • Field attenuation depends on a correct seal

How It Compares

The Howard Leight QD1 Quiet is the uncorded, reusable no-roll option. Weigh it against the alternatives before ordering:

Option Form NRR Best for
Quiet QD1 (this page) Uncorded reusable no-roll 26 Quick clean reuse, in-and-out of noise
Quiet QD30 (corded) Corded reusable no-roll 26 Preventing dropped plugs
Disposable foam plug Single-use foam 30-33 Highest attenuation for extreme noise

Choose the uncorded QD1 for quick reusable protection, the corded QD30 to avoid drops, or a disposable foam plug for the highest NRR. Compare in our disposable vs reusable ear plugs guide and the wider hearing protection range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Howard Leight Quiet QD1 corded or uncorded?

The QD1 is the uncorded (cordless) version. Howard Leight sells the same Quiet plug with a cord as the QD30 for applications where a neck cord helps prevent dropping. Choose the uncorded QD1 where a cord could snag on moving equipment.

What is the NRR of the Quiet QD1?

The Quiet QD1 is rated NRR 26 in the US. That is solid attenuation for a reusable pre-molded plug, though lower than a well-fitted foam plug. NRR is a laboratory value, so derate it for real-world use rather than assuming full protection.

Are the Quiet QD1 earplugs reusable?

Yes. The QD1 is a washable, multiple-use plug. Wash it with mild soap and warm water, pat it dry, and store it between uses. With proper care it lasts roughly 2 to 4 weeks of daily use before it should be replaced.

What is the no-roll design?

Unlike foam, the Quiet plug is a pre-molded contoured bell shape with a patented no-roll design and a built-in insertion stem. You do not roll it down; you hold the stem and push it gently into the canal, which is faster and keeps the sealing surface cleaner.

How do I insert the QD1 correctly?

Hold the built-in stem, reach over your head to pull the ear up and back, and push the plug gently into the ear canal until it seals. Do not force it. If you can still hear normally, reseat it or check that you have the plug oriented correctly.

How does a reusable plug compare with disposable foam?

Reusable pre-molded plugs are quicker to insert, cleaner to handle, and cheaper over time, but often carry a lower NRR than a well-fitted foam plug. Foam can reach higher attenuation but must be rolled and inserted correctly every time. See our foam vs reusable guide.

How do I clean and store the QD1?

Wash with mild soap and warm water only, pat dry with a towel, and store the plug in its case or a clean container between uses. Inspect it for cracks, hardening, or a poor seal, and replace it when it no longer seals or after its service life.

How should I apply the NRR to real noise levels?

OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating the labeled NRR because lab conditions overstate field performance. A common OSHA method subtracts 7 from the NRR and halves the remainder when estimating protection against a time-weighted average exposure. Follow your safety program's method.

When is hearing protection required?

OSHA requires hearing protection when noise reaches or exceeds an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA under 1910.95. If you must raise your voice to be heard at arm's length, noise is likely high enough to warrant protection. See our guide on when hearing protection is needed.

Can I use these with earmuffs for very loud work?

Yes. Dual protection - earplugs plus earmuffs - is used for very high noise, but the combined NRR is not the sum of the two. Add about 5 dB to the higher of the two device ratings as a rule of thumb, and follow your safety program for dual-protection thresholds.

How many pairs are in the QD1 box?

The QD1 is commonly sold in boxes of 100 pairs for stocking a crew or workplace, and in smaller packs. Check the packaging for the exact count and choose the pack that matches how you issue and replace plugs.

Who is the QD1 best for?

Workers who move in and out of noise and want a quick, clean, reusable plug without rolling foam each time - and those who prefer a lower-waste option than single-use foam. For the highest attenuation in constant extreme noise, a foam plug may rate higher.

Great value, comfortable
I have rather small ear canals and these are super comfortable. No pain even after wearing for a few hours.

Hard center, not as expected
Thought these would work great, looking at their design. But wasn’t expecting that outer center piece to be hard & go through ear plug. I do have smaller ear canals, so find fully soft moldable plugs work better.

dissapointed
They go in too far to the ear canal. They are too slippery and work their way out during work. Not very effective at stopping medium noise. The extracting stick is too short. Overall a bad product.

easy to use, but not quite as quiet as the diposables
These are fine, but they don't block as much noise as the disposable ones. Maybe that's a plus for some people, but not for me.

Still my shooting favorites
The usual good protection for shooting & comfortable to wear. My small ears need the "post" inside so I can fully seat them to be effective. Better noise reduction IMO than big [uncomfortable] external earmuffs. And not in the way.

So easy to insert, and comfortable!
People should get these earplugs rather than any other brand or type! Really, I don't know why they do! I was introduced to this brand when I was "on the job" in noisy environments; I was perusing a catalogue of industrial safety items when I read about these. I ordered a small amount for me and my team. We were so impressed! I talked to my boss about them and soon our whole department was wearing them! They are so very easy and quick to insert. Now retired, I use them for personal use. I like personally the ones without the lanyard but when I was working I did like the lanyard ones because I could put a loop of it thru the back of my hard hat band and just pull out the ear plugs from my ears without having to put them anywhere. They go in so much more quickly than ones that you have to squish up then insert!

These Work
These ear plugs are much better than the spongy models and do nicely in eliminating high to moderate noise levels for my sleeping. They are pretty comfortable and the design works pretty well. I would make one suggestion and that is to extend, lengthen the plug so it does not get stuck in the ear from pushing them in that little extra that shuts out most all sound. I had surfers ear and my ear canal was drilled out so the canal size is a bit larger than the average ear, resulting in the occasional time when the plug got stuck and my wife used tweezers to remove. This happened much more frequently when using the sponge type of plugs that are all shorter than these plugs. So far these are the best plugs I have used and I have tried at least 11 brands of insert ear plugs for night time sleep.

Howard Leight by Honeywell Quiet Reusable Earplugs, 100 Pairs (QD1)
These work great for my purpose. I use these at night to help sleep and not be awakened by extraneous noises. I took a pair of nail clippers and took out each blue rod in the earplugs. Then I cut off a few mm of length. You have to experiment and see what works best for you. Then I put them back in the earplugs. This enables me to have extra comfort when I sleep on the sides of my face so the plastic post does not cause pain in my ear. These are the best ear plugs that I have found and I own 3 boxes of the QD1 large. You have to be careful if a man to order large because some are medium or small and do not work well. You can try 2 or 4 by ordering them on Ebay and make sure large works for you. I hope this helps some folks who need a good pair of earplugs. Regards

Easy to use earplugs and not too pricey to replace
These are great ear plugs for temporary noise reduction, but not that great for every day use (like if you're trying to block out snoring while sleeping). They aren't the most comfortable plugs on the market, but they are a good value-priced pair and do the job, so if you're just looking for something to take to a concert or something like that, these are fine. They're a little too bulky for sleeping use though.

They do the job
They do the job - I use them in cinemas when people mistake them for restaurants and it just becomes too noisy. These block the popcorn and nachos cracking sounds entirely, while still allow to hear conversation (and movie of course, quite clearly). Now, for the heavy duty, as in drilling sounds, or loud snoring - I would look for something else. It's quieter, sure, but you can hear it in the background and once it starts getting on your nerves, this is just not enough. One sidenote - the little "stick" in the middle of the plug is actually dark blue, not orange. Makes them stick out even more. They used to offer these in skin color, which I preferred.

BEST I'VE FOUND
I've used them to cancel out hearing snoring or other noise at night because I am a light sleeper otherwise who also has a hard time getting to sleep, especially with hardly any noise around me. I've been sleeping with earplugs for probably 30 plus years. Over that time I've tried many kinds. These are hands down the easiest and Most Comfortable to me. I've stayed with them for for over 20 years!

Most Reusable Ear Plugs I have found
These are the most reusable ear plugs I have found. When they get dirty you can remove the rubber cores and wash with soap and water, let dry, reassemble, and use again. They are slightly stiffer than foam plugs so they can get somewhat uncomfortable after several hours of use. This may be because my ear holes are on the smaller side, so your results may vary.I buy several pairs at a time and leave them hanging on equipment(mower, chop saw, etc) for use the next time. When they get lost or too dirty to clean I replace them.

Very comfortable and easy to insert.
The best thing I can say is I have used "Quiet Ear plugs" for over 35 years because they are comfortable and have an excellent noise reduction. I have protected my hearing in heavy industrial by purchasing these myself. So much easier to insert than roll-up foam. What's more they can be cleaned and reused. A little more expensive than rolled foam, but what is your hearing worth to you?

Thank goodness for these!
I use these every night to sleep because I am a very light sleeper. These do not block out ALL noise, however. I use them to block sounds like the ticking of the clock, car doors slamming, and my cats walking around - things like that. But it will not block out the sounds of very loud music or a loud TV playing in the room. These are much easier to use than the foam kind of earplugs. I would recommend these to anyone looking to purchase earplugs.

Wonderful noise blocker!
I've used these earplugs for years and love them! The stem makes it sooooo much easier to get them the perfect amount into your ear - put them in, wait a little for them to adjust to your ear, and then push them in a little farther if you don't have a good seal. I use them for sleeping to block out the noise of leaf blowers, nearby road or house construction, or noisy partiers at campgrounds. It blocks the sound of snoring well, too.The box includes 100 PAIRS of earplugs - I found the description on the Amazon web page confusing on this. The plugs last through many uses - I usually lose them before they wear out enough to be ineffective.
