Howard Leight Multi Max MM-1 Cordless Earplugs Overview

The Howard Leight Multi Max MM-1 Cordless Earplugs are cordless single-use foam ear plugs from Howard Leight, rated NRR 31 dB. With no cord to catch or snag, they keep a low profile for tight and confined spaces β€” the most economical choice for high-volume single-use. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The Howard Leight Multi Max MM-1 belong to the cordless ear plugs range. They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy); for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 31 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 31 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~83 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~88 dBA after derating Good fit
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~78 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the Howard Leight Multi Max MM-1?

Buy them if you want single-use foam hearing protection in a low-profile uncorded design at NRR 31 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare Airsoft DPAS-1, FirmFit FF-1, TRUSTFIT. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The Howard Leight Multi Max MM-1 reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a low-profile uncorded NRR 31 plug that won’t snag in tight spaces.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

Best earplugs I found for sleeping
I've tried almost every earplug on the market and have been using these for several years. My husband snores, and I need complete quiet to sleep. These earplugs are easy to roll between your fingers, insert quickly, and they expand to a comfortable, secure fit. They are very soft, block out most noise, and stay comfortable throughout the night. I also love that each pair is individually packaged, which makes them convenient for travel. If you're looking for comfortable, effective earplugs for sleeping, these are the best I've found.

200 pairs of the world's best earplugs, cheap. Don't be fooled by look-alike knockoffs!
If you are looking for earplugs, then as far as I am concerned, the only question is: do you want them on a string, or no string?I have been through hundreds, maybe thousands of earplugs in my life. Everything from the rough yellow nerf cylinders to expensive reusable "audiophile" earplugs. The short version is, these are the ones to get. And don't be fooled by the CVS or Walgreen's look-alikes, you want the actual Howard Leight brand, especially at this price (cheaper than the knockoffs!) They are not made of the same material/construction!These earplugs have a super-soft, crinkly/squishy sort of texture that only this brand seems to get right. They compress down to practically nothing, then gradually fill up your ear-hole with a super-comfortable, super-thorough seal. The result is a VERY effective and consistent "turning down the volume" of the world. It neither makes you deaf, nor does it ruin your ability to hear a full spectrum of frequencies, which is important for musicians, and also for people who just need to hear and understand their co-workers in a noisy environment. If you're a musician, these make stage volume sound like the same material at club volume, instead of making loud volume sound like loud muffled bass and nothing else. If you're on a shooting range or a noisy job site, you'll still be able to hear and understand speech, it will just sound like the volume knob is turned down. If you are trying to sleep, your alarm clock will still cut through, these are just going to take the volume of traffic, road, and background noise down a few notches.Other earplugs, including other ones that look the same, are not as good. This specific brand is consistently:- The most comfortable- The easiest to insert and use- The best at reducing broadband sound levels- The best at not just muffling highs while letting deafening lows get through. If you ever use earplugs in your life, buy these. The only question is whether you want the ones with strings (for job sites and places where you need to take them in and out throughout the day) or stringless (for sleeping or appearance). Buy the Howard Leights and don't look back. You can spend more, but you won't get better.

Among the best earplugs currently available for market
As someone who likes to sleep in as close to pure silence as is possible, I am truly pleased with these specific earplugs. I've found them to be among the best in terms of noise cancellation, comfort, and general quality.Generally, I do not hear any of the various noises that would bother me, such as individuals being loud downstairs while talking or playing something from speakers. Yes, that is an issue I often have to deal with since everyone in this house has awkward sleeping schedules, generally different from each other. On that note, when I stay up too late and want to finally turn-in, these are great to help block out a barking dog or chirping bird that just won't stop.In terms of comfort, they're easily the least uncomfortable foam earplug I've tried. This may be a personal thing, but these sorts of plugs are always uncomfortable after being in long enough, so this is a bit of an awkward area to judge. That being said, it's usually never bad enough after an hour or two of use. In most cases, this is more than enough time to either get to sleep or have whatever noise it is you're trying to avoid expire. They stick in pretty well if you properly and deeply insert them. Can't say how big or small the size is relative to my ears, since I don't know if my inner ear is smaller or larger than average; all I can say is they do pretty well staying put. I don't think I've had any issues with them coming out after a night's rest. There's was one time where they were removed from my ears as I woke up, but given that they were in a neat pile on my side table, I'll assume I removed them in a half-awake state at some point.I appreciate how each set of plugs is individually wrapped, and I have noticed no weird smell or film on any of them I've used so far. I've re-used a set about three or four times, which leads me to believe they're fairly durable as they keep shape and effectiveness at least up to that point. This effectively triples the value of the product, which is a huge win for me.Finally, and most importantly, the aesthetics are legit. The strawberry lemonade color scheme is pretty radDon't think I can say much more than that. I've shopped around, trying various different earplugs, both foam and silicone, yet these are the ones that stand out. I'll likely keep stocked on these going forward, and if you require a massive reduction in any inconsiderate noise pollution, you should too.

My favorites: individually packaged, best material comfortable to sleep with and VERY effective πŸ’€
EXCELLENT! I love that they are individually packaged pairs, so I can just hand it out and it’s 100% sanitary. The material is soft and they can be used multiple times without warping or losing their shape. These are definitely my favorite earplugs of the many I’ve tried, especially since I have very small ears. My guy likes them too, so they fit all size ears. Most importantly:They are comfortable to sleep with and VERY effective πŸ’€

Works great
They work, plain and simple. I previously bought the green, cone shaped ear plugs from "x" brand (I actually don't recall the name [nor do I ever want to think of the name again], because I threw them away as soon as I bought these.) Skip whatever other brand you were thinking of buying and give these a try first. They work!1.) Make sure you read the directions. I never knew this, but apparently there is a proper way to place the ear plugs in your ear. It takes more than just "rolling them up and shoving them in." You have to do it in such a way that they are properly placed deep inside the canal, as to provide maximum comfort, keep them from falling out during the night and maximize the sound buffering.2.) If you find that your ears are sore - if you're the kind of person who wears them at night time as I do - give it about 2 weeks. Also, take a few days off to let your ears adjust and recover. When I first started wearing them, my ears were very sore the next morning. It also felt very awkward to wear them throughout the night. But now, 3-4 weeks later, my ears are not sore at all, they stay in all night and they are only MILDLY uncomfortable. The only really annoying thing is that my ears get very itchy in the morning. Usually I can remedy this by scratching my ear OVER the ear plug. Then I just pass out again and all is well.Tip: Don't take them out during the morning, because you'll never get them back in. Your hands will A.) Be way too fatigued and tired and B.) The earplug will be much too warm and pliable. If you plan on doing that, keep a "cold" spare pair hanging around the bed somewhere that you can conveniently and easily reach. I keep a spare pair on the bottom of my window sill, since the head of my bed is near the window. What else? They do an excellent job! Also, I noticed I have less ear wax these days. I have no idea why or what the scientific explanation is behind this, but I definitely don't have as much ear wax - I would guess it has something to do with the air interacting with the skin in your ear canal and since you cut off the air supply you cut off the wax production. Kind of a cool side effect. Also, strangely enough, after about 1 month of using these, the tinnitus in my left ear has diminished dramatically. I have no idea why, but I suspect it's because i'm not using my fan for "white noise" anymore and that has probably given my ear drums a much needed rest. I always felt that I was abusing my ear drums using the fan as white noise. But no more!So give these a try! And wait 2 weeks before you make any conclusions.

This is the only ear plug I will ever buy again. They don't hurt & I sleep through the night.
I've tried dozens of ear plugs. My sister gave me these and said she loves them. I wrote her a thank you note. These stay is place, don't hurt in the middle of the night and block all noise. They're easy to put in the ear, you don't worry about quality and the best part is when they expand in your ear and all the noise goes away. 10 out of 10 for Quality, fit, and seal.

you won't "err" with these 'plugs
there is, of course, a certain subjectivity inherent to the evaluation of an earplug's utility. The prime issue is that of the ear canal and whether or not yours are normal shaped pathways that provide a snug home for foam noise blockers or are, like mine, misshapen corridors of bone and flesh to which no earplug material seems to conform. With that in mind, these particular Howard Leight's do the best total job of getting in my ear, staying there, and blocking out noise. There are some that are better at the last item in that list, but there's no real point in using them if they constantly wiggle and pop out. YES. Before you say it. YES, I do know how to put an earplug in. Many still won't stay in there - perhaps it's because of my strangely shapen inner ear regions, or perhaps it's just a secret truth of earplugs. Whatever it is, THESE work well. Oddly enough, the other Howard Leight make I tried - the MAX 1 - was AWFUL. Again though, I think there's some subjectivity here that's unavoidable due to ear shape and so forth. Whatever the case may be, these particular plugs are my jam and that's that.SPECIFICALLY:1) noise reduction - very good. I live in a noisy apartment and if I use them along with a loud circular fan, I can sleep through the night. Good for dulling out loud voices, cancelling out regular ones. No ear plug or ear muffs ever made will block out the thudding noise of footfalls or idiots slamming doors, alas. While it goes beyond the scope of this review, I beg of you, if you are sensitive to noise, be sure to rent on the top floor.2) comfort - very comfortable. they fit in nicely and stay there.3) aesthetic - very nice futuristic style that seems akin to a rocket ship or a beautifully designed nuclear power plant cooling tower. They look cool when I find them on the floor or see them sitting in the garbage. Makes me think I live in a special era of human progress.

Only ones that work for me
I wear earplugs to bed every night. There's something weird about my ear canals and I can't put this type of foam ear plugs in the "correct" way. These have a flare at one end. So I put them in "backwards". They are very comfortable and still block most of the small noises, like the fridge or outside noises so I can fall asleep. These are also a good deal for the quantity you receive. I cant' say that they "stay in place" because I use them backwards, but these are the only earplugs that work for me.

Yes!!
It's lightweight and so soft in the ear. Others I've tried are too hard on the ear and can be uncomfortable. But these, I often forget it's in, it's truly unnoticeable in your ear after it adjusts for a few seconds. They help me sleep all night from the sound blocking. I'm truly unsure if their ability to block out sound is better than the average ear plug because I'm sleeping while I wear them, but I haven't woken up to the usual sounds that happen at night (my AC wakes me up without ear plugs, we have a train near us that honks every night and my cat is loud. Nothing has woken me up so I would say they work as intended.)
