Carhartt Carthage Safety Glasses with Vented Foam Carriage β€” 3 Lens Options

The Carhartt Carthage is a full-frame safety eyewear with a vented foam carriage β€” a foam gasket that seals the lens frame against the face to block dust and debris while still allowing air circulation. Unlike fully enclosed safety goggles, the Carthage's open vent design prevents fogging during active work while the foam seal provides additional protection over standard open-frame safety glasses. The Carthage fits comfortably over most prescription glasses, making it a popular choice for outdoor construction, landscaping, farming, and general industrial work where dust ingress is a concern but full goggle seal is not required. ANSI Z87.1+ rated for high-impact protection. Available in clear, gray, and sandstone bronze anti-fog lenses β€” each with permanent anti-fog coating.

Lens Option Comparison

Lens Color Model # ASIN Price Best For
Clear Anti-Fog CHB410DTP B000XO0EP4 $17.47 Indoor, low-light, overcast conditions; variable or changing light
Gray Anti-Fog CHB420DTP B000XN22XW $19.59 Bright sunlight; outdoor work; reduces glare without color distortion
Sandstone Bronze Anti-Fog CHB418DTP B00GGUMLR8 $19.40 Outdoor variable light; contrast enhancement; construction and landscaping

Key Features

  • Vented foam carriage β€” padded foam gasket around lens perimeter seals against face for enhanced dust and debris protection; vented design allows airflow to prevent lens fogging during physical activity
  • ANSI Z87.1+ rated β€” tested for high-velocity impact (HV), high-mass impact (HM), and optical quality; the "+" suffix indicates compliance with the more stringent high-impact test (87 mph/140 kph steel ball at 3 meters)
  • Permanent anti-fog coating β€” all three lens colors include a factory-applied anti-fog treatment on the inner lens surface; reduces fogging in temperature transitions and high-humidity environments
  • Over-the-glass (OTG) compatible β€” frame geometry accommodates most standard prescription eyeglass frames; foam carriage provides clearance while maintaining a dust-resistant seal
  • Polycarbonate lens β€” lightweight, impact-resistant polycarbonate with UV protection blocks harmful UVA/UVB radiation
  • Wraparound lens geometry β€” wide-angle polycarbonate lens provides peripheral coverage beyond the typical safety glasses frame profile
  • Carhartt Black/Tan frame β€” rugged two-tone frame construction in Carhartt's signature Black/Tan colorway; TPR nose piece and temple tips for non-slip grip
  • One size fits most β€” adjustable temples fit a broad range of head sizes; foam carriage adapts to face contours for consistent seal

ANSI Z87.1 Compliance

The Carhartt Carthage meets ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 high-impact (Z87+) requirements. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 and 1926.102 require eye and face protection to meet ANSI Z87.1 when there is a reasonable probability of eye injury. The Z87+ marking on the lens and frame confirms compliance with the high-velocity impact test β€” the appropriate standard for most industrial, construction, and agricultural environments. For operations involving chemical splash, liquid metal, or intense radiation, evaluate whether full-seal safety goggles or a face shield provides more appropriate protection.

Z87.1 Test Carhartt Carthage Status
High-velocity impact (Z87+) Pass β€” 1" steel ball at 150 ft/s
High-mass impact (Z87+) Pass β€” 17.6 oz pointed projectile
Optical quality (class 1) Pass β€” no prismatic distortion
UV protection Yes β€” UVA/UVB blocking
Anti-fog Yes β€” permanent coating (inner lens)

Typical Applications

  • Outdoor construction β€” dust, flying debris, UV exposure on jobsites; foam carriage seals out fine dust without full goggle seal
  • Landscaping & agriculture β€” dust, lawn debris, pesticide drift; over-prescription compatibility for workers who wear Rx eyewear
  • Woodworking & carpentry β€” sawdust, wood chips, finish splatter; foam seal provides better dust protection than open-frame glasses
  • General manufacturing β€” grinding sparks, chips, splash risk; ANSI Z87+ rated for impact environments
  • Warehousing & distribution β€” dust and debris in high-traffic environments; lightweight for all-day wear

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the vented foam carriage and how is it different from safety goggles?
The foam carriage is a soft foam gasket bonded to the inner rim of the Carthage frame that presses against the face to create a partial seal against dust and debris. It differs from a full-seal safety goggle in that the foam carriage has ventilation β€” air passes through or around the foam to prevent fogging β€” while a full-seal goggle relies on indirect or anti-fog valves. The carriage adds significantly more dust protection than a standard open-frame safety glass but does not provide the liquid splash seal of an indirect-vent goggle. Use the Carthage where dust and debris are the primary concern; use an indirect-vent goggle where chemical splash or airborne liquid is a hazard.
Will the Carthage fit over my prescription glasses?
The Carhartt Carthage is designed as an over-the-glass (OTG) frame and will fit over most standard prescription frames. Full-rim frames with thick temples may be tight. If your prescription glasses have large frames or wrap-around temples, fit can vary. When ordering for workers with prescription eyewear, it is good practice to verify fit before requiring widespread use. Alternatively, prescription safety glasses inserts or Rx safety glasses eliminate the over-glass compatibility issue entirely.
Which lens color should I choose?
Choose Clear (CHB410DTP) for indoor work, variable light, overcast outdoor conditions, or any environment where brightness is not an issue. Choose Gray (CHB420DTP) for consistent bright sunlight β€” gray provides the most natural color perception with reduced luminance. Choose Sandstone Bronze (CHB418DTP) for outdoor environments with variable or hazy light β€” bronze tints enhance contrast and depth perception, which benefits outdoor detail work like landscaping and construction layout. For operations that require frequent movement between indoors and outdoors, a second pair of clear lenses is often kept as a backup.
Does the anti-fog coating wear off?
The Carthage uses a permanent anti-fog treatment β€” unlike topical anti-fog sprays or wipes, the coating is factory-applied to the lens substrate. It does not wash off during normal cleaning. However, using abrasive cleaning materials, solvents, or very hot water can degrade the coating over time. Clean lenses with a soft cloth and mild soap or lens-safe cleaning solution. Avoid paper towels and shop rags which can scratch the coating and lens surface.
Is the Carhartt Carthage OSHA compliant for workplace use?
Yes, provided the hazard assessment determines that Z87.1+ rated safety glasses are appropriate protection for the task. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 requires that protective eye and face equipment comply with ANSI Z87.1. The Carthage meets ANSI Z87.1-2020 high-impact (Z87+) requirements. Your site's hazard assessment may require additional protection β€” chemical splash hazards require indirect-vent splash goggles; arc flash requires arc-rated face protection; laser work requires laser-rated eyewear.
How do I clean the foam carriage?
Wipe the foam carriage with a damp cloth and mild soap; do not soak the foam as moisture can degrade the adhesive bond over time. Allow to air dry. The foam carriage is an integral part of the frame and is not designed to be removed and replaced independently. If the foam carriage degrades or detaches, replace the eyewear. For high-sweat environments or extended daily use, inspect the foam quarterly for compression set and adhesive integrity.
What is the difference between the CHB410, CHB418, and CHB420 model numbers?
All three are variants of the Carhartt Carthage Safety Eyewear with vented foam carriage. The model number suffix indicates the lens color: CHB410DTP = Clear Anti-Fog, CHB418DTP = Sandstone Bronze Anti-Fog, CHB420DTP = Gray Anti-Fog. The frame, foam carriage, and ANSI Z87.1+ rating are identical across all three. The "DTP" suffix indicates the Black/Tan frame colorway. Choose based on lighting conditions where they will primarily be used.
When should I replace these safety glasses?
Replace when: (1) the lens is scratched in the central vision zone, (2) the lens shows crazing or discoloration from chemical exposure, (3) the frame is cracked or deformed, (4) the foam carriage is detached or heavily compressed, or (5) after any significant impact. Do not wear safety glasses that have sustained a major impact β€” internal lens micro-fractures may not be visible but reduce impact resistance. ANSI Z87.1 rated eyewear is designed to protect for one significant impact event; after an event, replace regardless of visible damage.

Best safety goggles I've had.
These are a game changer for yard work and any other projects around the house that need eye protection. Having the head band and foam surrounds help a lot for fog, still not perfect, but that could be my mask more than the glasses and the foam helps against other flying debris. The tint is nice but not polarized so it's still bright but much better than my previous clear glasses.

Fit well and comfortable
Use these for cutting grass. I prefer the amber shade. Nice to have the option of elastic band and glasses temples

Nice quality, but does not keep 100% of dust out.
Nice quality and good fit, but the foam seal has gaps, presumably to let air in, but it also lets some dust in. I bought this for mowing with a zero-turn. It blocks 90% of the dust and grit, but not all. I may try filling the gaps with silicone. Best solution so far is swim goggles.

Functional as all get out
Comfortable, good-looking, not too heavy. The seal is broken up to allow for some skin-breathe, which I appreciate. Performs fine alongside more expensive alternatives. The snap system feels sturdy enough, and they've been very useful on a jobsite. Can't say anything for or against the scratch resistance, because I take care of my ish.

Perfect for me, nice quality, and they look good, too!
I bought these after cataract surgery because the wind made my eyes water. Eight weeks later, and I'm still wearing them when outside on a windy day!

Nice style and fit
Fits well but lenses came with a couple scratches on them.-after a week of using- I get they aren’t the most expensive safety glasses but they definitely aren’t scratch resistant. After a week of storing them in a box with my gps after work each day both lenses have a bunch of microscratches

Great for yard work - no fogging!
I’ve only used them once so far but they worked better than expected. They are easy to adjust, fit snugly and comfortable to wear. I had them on for about 4 hours while I mowed and trimmed and they never fogged up. I suffer greatly from allergies so I also wear a mask and I was more than pleased with them. Absolutely no grass, dirt or debris made it inside and into my eyes.I definitely recommend them.

Really Like These!
Great product for the money. I really like the option of being able to take the arms off and use the retaining band instead. They are fairly comfortable to wear. I have always had issue with getting small particles of debris and dust in my eyes while mowing the lawn. These helped out tremendously with that. Even on hot days the lenses did not fog nor did I have an issue with getting sweat in my eyes. I was surprised with how breathable these are on my face without compromising safety. The only down side is they did not seem to fit the bridge of my nose the greatest but that could just be me. The tint of the lenses was a bit darker than I expected as well. Overall, I would very much recommend these.

Eye Protection - 100%%
I know this is for use as eye protection from building but I use it in Vegas with our crazy 12-20mph winds that kick up all kinds of disgusting desert-human made dirt and pollen. My eyes no longer burn when I come back in from the outside! Yay CartHartt!
