An NRR 31 muff with hardened cushions isn't an NRR 31 muff; the kit restores the number you bought.

3m peltor hyx5 hygiene kit — what the listing actually specifies
What to check before you buy
The rating on the box is a laboratory number, not the protection you will get. NIOSH derates the labelled NRR because real-world attenuation is consistently lower than the test-lab figure - the fit a trained subject achieves under supervision is not the fit a worker achieves on the fifth donning of a shift.
- Replacement parts affect the rating
- Ear cushions and foam inserts are part of the tested assembly. Worn or substituted parts change the attenuation the muff actually delivers.
- Hygiene kit intervals
- Manufacturers specify replacement intervals for cushions and inserts, typically measured in months of regular use. Hardened cushions leak.
- Compatibility is model-specific
- Cushions and inserts are matched to specific muff models. A near fit is a leak.
- NRR is a laboratory figure
- Real-world attenuation is typically well below the printed Noise Reduction Rating. Fit and condition determine what the wearer actually gets.
