OSHA 1910.178(q)(7) requires a daily / pre-shift inspection of every powered industrial truck — and a forklift removed from service for any defect found. Work this checklist before the first lift; any failed item means tag out and report.

FAQ
Engine-off vs engine-on checks?
Do the visual walk-around with the truck off (tires, forks, leaks, fluids, data plate, seatbelt), then start it and test the operational items (brakes, steering, horn, lights, alarm, hydraulics).
What if something fails?
Remove the truck from service immediately, tag it out, and report it. OSHA prohibits operating a forklift in unsafe condition.
