3M Speedglas G5-03 E Welding Helmet (G5NC ADF) Overview

The 3M Speedglas G5-03 E welding helmet (09-0100-20) is a compact passive auto-darkening welding helmet with the G5NC Natural Color auto-darkening filter, not a powered respirator. The G5NC lens gives a full-color view before, during, and after welding, with selectable shades 3, 5, and 8-12, a shade 3 light state, three arc sensors, and a 9.03 square-inch viewing area.

As the 3M Speedglas G5-03, this Speedglas G5-03 E uses the Speedglas G5NC ADF and welds low-amp TIG down to about 1 amp. Instead of a flip-up, this Speedglas G5-03 Natural Color helmet uses Tap technology to switch between welding and grinding; on Speedglas G5-03 vs G5-01, the G5-03 is lighter and more compact.

It protects the eyes and face from the arc but does not protect your lungs; for welding fume, add a respirator, and note the G5-03 platform upgrades to the 3M Adflo powered air on the Pro Air version. Compare the flip-up Speedglas G5-01 with Adflo and the Speedglas 9100, and browse the range in welding helmets.

What This Helmet Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Stick, TIG, MIG welding Purpose-built Shades 8-12; low-amp TIG to about 1 amp.
Natural color view Strong G5NC lens; full color before and after welding.
Quick weld-to-grind Strong Tap the side to switch, no flip-up needed.
Welding fume protection Add a respirator Wear a respirator or upgrade to Adflo powered air.
Oxygen-poor or emergency air Not applicable Not a respirator; use supplied air or an air tank.

Match the protection to the hazard. The Speedglas G5-03 E is eye, face, and head protection: the auto-darkening lens shields your eyes from the arc, but it provides no respiratory protection on its own. Welding fume still reaches your lungs, so pair the helmet with a suitable respirator, or move to the G5-03 Pro Air or a G5-01 with the 3M Adflo powered air system, matched to your exposure. Because the helmet is not a respirator, it has no assigned protection factor and is never a substitute for respiratory protection; oxygen-poor or IDLH atmospheres require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, not a welding helmet. Always set the correct shade for the process, use grind mode only for grinding, replace scratched cover plates, and follow the 3M manual and OSHA welding requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 3M Speedglas G5-03 E welding helmet?

It is a compact passive auto-darkening welding helmet with the G5NC Natural Color auto-darkening filter. The E model is the non-respiratory version; it protects the eyes and face from the arc but is not a powered respirator.

What shades does the G5NC lens cover?

The G5NC Natural Color lens offers selectable shades 3, 5, and 8-12, with a shade 3 light state. It gives a full-color view of the work before, during, and after welding, and welds low-amp TIG down to about 1 amp.

What is Tap technology?

Instead of a flip-up front, the G5-03 uses Tap technology: you tap the side of the helmet to switch between welding and grinding. It is a quick, one-motion change that keeps the helmet down and your hands free.

How does the G5-03 compare to the G5-01?

The G5-03 is lighter and more compact, uses Tap-to-grind, and is the value option. The G5-01 is the heavy-duty flip-up flagship. They share filters and many spares, and both G5-03 Pro Air and G5-01 accept the Adflo PAPR.

How large is the viewing area?

The G5NC lens has a 9.03 square-inch viewing area with three arc sensors. The G5-03 also offers more coverage than many helmets in its price range, which helps in a range of positions and processes.

Is this a powered respirator?

No. The G5-03 E is an auto-darkening welding helmet, not a PAPR. It protects the eyes and face from the arc but does not filter or supply breathing air. For welding-fume protection you add a respirator separately.

Can I add powered air later?

The G5-03 platform is designed to accept the 3M Adflo powered air system on the Pro Air version, and the G5-03 shares Adflo spare parts with the G5-01. Confirm the correct Adflo components for the G5-03 before ordering.

Does it protect against welding fume?

Not on its own. The helmet is eye, face, and head protection; it does not protect your lungs from welding fume. Pair it with a suitable respirator, or use an Adflo-equipped Speedglas, matched to your exposure.

Can I use it for grinding?

Yes. Tap the side of the helmet to switch to grind mode, then tap again to return to welding. Never grind with the lens set to a welding shade, and confirm you are in grind mode before you start.

Can I use it in an oxygen-poor or emergency atmosphere?

No. A welding helmet is not a respirator, so it does nothing for the air you breathe and is never used for oxygen-poor or immediately dangerous atmospheres, which require a supplied-air respirator or a self-contained air-tank apparatus.

How is the lens powered?

The auto-darkening lens uses solar cells with batteries and darkens automatically when the arc strikes. Check the sensors and batteries before each shift, and keep the cover lens clean and free of spatter for a clear view.

How do I maintain it?

Inspect the lens, cover plates, sensors, and headgear before each use, replace scratched cover plates, keep the sensors clean, and store it away from heat and spatter. Follow the 3M manual for cover-plate and battery part numbers.
