TopTes RT-389 Refrigerant Leak Detector — Rechargeable HVAC Sniffer

The TopTes RT-389 refrigerant leak detector is the affordable, rechargeable way into refrigerant leak detection — a gas leak detector with three sensitivity modes and three alarm types covering halogenated refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs and HC blends). It pinpoints the leak; it does not measure whether a space is safe.

What the TopTes RT-389 detects (and what it doesn’t)

It detects halogenated refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs and HC blends) — not combustibles, CO or oxygen. For natural-gas or propane leaks use a combustible sniffer such as the TopTes PT520A; for CO see the Carbon Monoxide Alarms & Detectors range. As a leak locator it finds the source, not atmosphere safety — use a Portable Gas Detectors monitor for occupied-space decisions. Use the three sensitivity modes to locate the area, then pinpoint the joint.

Cross-shopping? This unit sits in our Gas Leak Detectors hub alongside Klein Tools ET120, Forensics Gas Leak Detector, TopTes PT-830S, TopTes PT520A. For other gas-detection form factors see Portable Gas Detectors, Personal & Wearable Gas Detectors, Fixed Gas Detection Systems, or browse the full Gas Detectors range.

How the TopTes RT-389 compares

The RT-389 is the budget rechargeable refrigerant option. For higher peak sensitivity, the Fieldpiece DR58 (heated diode) is the pro pick; the Elitech ILD-200 offers a long-life infrared sensor for lower lifetime cost.

  • Choose the TopTes RT-389 for affordable, rechargeable refrigerant detection with selectable sensitivity.
  • Step up to the Elitech ILD-200 for a long-life infrared sensor.
  • Choose the Fieldpiece DR58 for pro-grade heated-diode sensitivity.

Frequently asked questions

What refrigerants does the TopTes RT-389 detect?

It detects halogenated refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs and HC blends) — including newer HFO and HC blends. It does not detect combustibles or CO.

Is the RT-389 rechargeable?

Yes — it uses a rechargeable battery, so there are no disposable cells to manage between service calls.

What are the three sensitivity modes for?

They let you start on high sensitivity to find the leak area, then step down to pinpoint the exact joint without constant false triggering.

How does it compare to the Fieldpiece DR58 and Elitech ILD-200?

The RT-389 is the budget rechargeable option; the Fieldpiece DR58 is a pro heated-diode tool with higher peak sensitivity, and the Elitech ILD-200 uses a long-life infrared sensor.

Can it tell me if a space is safe to enter?

No — it locates refrigerant leaks only. For occupied-space safety use a Portable Gas Detectors monitor.

Does it detect natural gas or propane?

No — it is refrigerant-specific. For combustibles use a sniffer like the TopTes PT520A.

What alarm types does it have?

Three — audible, visual and vibration — so you get clear feedback in noisy or bright environments.

Is it good for automotive A/C work?

Yes — it suits automotive A/C diagnostics as well as light HVAC/R service, at an entry price.

How do I pinpoint a leak?

Set a higher sensitivity to find the area, then lower it and sweep slowly along joints and coils to isolate the exact leak.

Is it in stock and how does it ship?

Use the Amazon buy button for current availability and delivery timing through our fulfillment partner.

Is the RT-389 sensitive enough for small leaks?

It handles typical leaks well; for the smallest losses, the pro Fieldpiece DR58 or long-life Elitech ILD-200 are more sensitive.

Does the sensor need replacing?

Verify performance against a known refrigerant source periodically; budget refrigerant sensors have a shorter service life than infrared units.
