Editorial assessment by the WC Safety Editorial Team, based on published Sellstrom specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Sellstrom S80226 is an ANSI Z87.1 Odyssey II smoke/gray-lens safety goggle with indirect ventilation, a reliable face seal, and an adjustable elastic strap, built to manage glare in bright outdoor industrial, refinery, and oil-and-gas environments — a sealed goggle; confirm the D3 splash marking on the listing.

Why the Sellstrom S80226 cuts outdoor glare in a sealed goggle

Bright open sites, reflective tanks, and sunny refinery decks throw sustained glare that clear lenses cannot manage — and squinting is a safety problem. The S80226 Odyssey II answers with a smoke/gray lens that lowers visible light transmission to control glare and eye strain, while keeping neutral color rendering so instrumentation and color-coded signage still read true. It carries the same sealed Odyssey II platform: a reliable face seal, indirect ventilation, and an adjustable strap, certified to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. As safety goggles go, this is the outdoor smoke-lens pick, and the best eye protection guide and the ANSI Z87.1 guide explain the markings. It seals the eyes and tames the glare.

Safety first: the S80226 is a sealed indirect-vent goggle, so it covers dust, debris, and mist that open glasses cannot — but for a chemical splash hazard, confirm the D3 splash marking on the listing to verify the splash rating for your task. The smoke lens is for glare, not arc or UV welding work. For concentrated splash, add a face shield over the goggle, and see the glasses vs goggles guide for when a sealed goggle is required.

What the Sellstrom S80226 listing documents

From the published specs: an ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 sealed goggle; a smoke/gray lens that manages glare with neutral color rendering; indirect ventilation; a reliable face seal; and an adjustable elastic strap. These are true smoke lens safety goggles and indirect-vent safety goggles credentials in a sealed safety goggles format. Confirm the D3 marking and fit on the listing.

How the Sellstrom S80226 compares to other eye protection

For the clear-lens version of the same frame, the Sellstrom S80225 Clear; for a chemical Flex Seal goggle, the Uvex S3405HS Flex Seal; for a panoramic sealed goggle, the Uvex Futura; for an indirect-vent 3M splash goggle, the 3M Centurion 454AF; and for open impact glasses with a smoke lens, the Pyramex Venture II. The eye protection buyer's guide covers the range.

Choosing the right goggle and lens tint

Match the lens tint, seal, and vent style to the light and hazard. Browse the eye protection and anti-fog eyewear collections; for the tint choice, the clear vs smoke guide and the polarized vs non-polarized guide; and for the goggle decision, the glasses vs face shields guide.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The S80226 smoke suits oil and gas, refinery, mining, and utility work in bright, reflective conditions, pairing with the clear S80225 for workers who move indoors — see the oil and gas eyewear guide and the outdoor eyewear guide. Standardizing the crew on the Odyssey II platform in clear and smoke simplifies procurement while matching the lens to the light — see the manufacturing eyewear guide for selection. Confirm the D3 splash marking and fit on the listing, and retire the goggle when the lens is scratched enough to impair vision. Not totally sealed, but here's why...
I bought this product based upon the apparent popularity on Amazon, despite some of the negatives that were touted. Biggest thing seemed to be a lack of proper fit which didn't allow for a total seal. I decided to take a flier on this anyway, and I'm really not disappointed.I'm a retired firefighter, and I was looking for a goggle that I could use in a brush fire situation. I live in a wildland area, and I was recently forced to work in fire zone while helping to evacuate our horse (among others) just recently. With this incident, I didn't have goggles, and I regretted it from the outset. Winds up to 50 mph along with embers and debris made me wish I had my goggles, but I didn't have them. That's why I looked to buy a set. This set is seemingly well made and is comfortable. Many of the goggles I looked at online are designed to work with a helmet, which meant the headband might be overly big. Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't want to take the chance. Not the case with this goggle. It is easily adjusted to fit a head without a helmet.I was looking for a non-vented goggle to help protect from smoke intrusion. This goggle seemingly met that description, so I pulled the trigger. Fit-wise, most of the periphery of the goggle makes a very good seal for me. That's a plus. However, since this goggle is designed to go over glasses, there is a slight gap in the seal at the temple which allows for glasses earpieces to pass through. No amount of adjustment can make up for this gap.Maybe I'll look to see if I can fill that gap with silicon, but maybe I won't. If you are in a brush fire situation, the smoke will be bad, but blowing debris and ash will be the biggest hazard for your eyes. These will certainly fill the bill for that. These were purchased specifically for use while working around a brush fire. They haven't been tested yet in that regard, but it seems to be a very good product for the price. If you're simply looking for eye protection for other tasks (chainsaw or other situations where the eye might be threatened), these will certainly fill the bill.I gave this five stars based on what I was looking for and what was delivered. I may be proven wrong down the road, but I'm happy with this purchase at the outset.

Great COVID-19 goggles. Here's a hack for reading glasses wearers...
First the goggles, and then my hack:GOGGLES: As described by another reviewer, these goggles have slots for the temples of eyeglasses, so they are not 100% tight. However, that was very easy to remedy with a little piece of foam weather stripping. The goggles are a pretty good fit to my face, which is pretty average for European ancestry. Flatter and broader noses probably wouldn't fit well, and there is not a lot of forgiveness (cushion) in the fit. The lenses DO NOT FOG, even if you try to fog them directly with your breath. They are very clear and of good optical quality. They are reasonably comfortable and easy to put on. They may not fit well with all masks, but there is generally pretty good space over the nose. Furthermore, the nose area of the goggles can hold down the edge of most masks.MY HACK (see photos): I cannot read without my reading glasses, and this pandemic is driving me nuts. When I put on my specs, I have to take off my goggles. And I'm worried I might infect myself by transferring germs to my eyes. No longer! These goggles seem to have an attachment area for some accessory around the nose, and I used it for attaching reading specs. I cut a notch in the rubber and zip-tied a pair of Noble brand flat reading specs to the mask. The specs can flip up or down. In the down position, I get a tiny "bifocal" area down low, which works for most purposes. In the up position, the specs are in the center of my visual field - suitable for reading a computer screen. I had to make one tiny modification to the specs: The bridge is a plastic "spring" that grips the nose. I had to heat the bridge very carefully to soften the plastic, so that I could re-form it with the lenses in a more "flat" orientation.Overall, I'm very pleased with the goggles and am giddy that I now have specs I can use without doffing my PPE and risking contamination! :-D

Comfortable and work well with glasses.
These goggles are very comfortable and fit well, even when wearing glasses. I'm not sure if they are 100% airtight since there is a small gap for the eyeglass frame to pass through to the ear. But they're close. They have a foam seal which is very comfortable, and I prefer it over standard safety goggles.

The Best Eye Protection I've Found!!!
These are terrific goggles! I have RCE, and must protect my eyes from air movement to avoid tearing a cornea. The Sellstrom Fire Safety Goggles are the VERY BEST I've found! They cost a bit more, and are so very worth the price! They're easy to adjust, slow to fog up, (although I do switch pairs halfway through shoveling when we have a snowstorm,) and make a wonderful seal around my face. The tinted ones provide good sun protection and are still easy to see through. I've invested in many goggles, and these are my absolute FAVORITE!

Slightly Narrow but Very Comfortable
Excellant product, Extremely comfortable, they feel similar to oakley ski goggles and they seem to be well built. I use the clear ones and they don't limit my vision at night at all, I see just fine. They're pretty good fitting, I'd like them a bit wider but not bad to wear for 20 minutes at a time.

Good product for the cost
This is a high-quality product, well designed and fits tightly on the face. I will wear these in smoke, wind, debris swelling, and feel comfortable my eyes are protected. They fit over my eyeglasses, but it takes a bit of maneuvering since one has to hold it away from the face long enough to cover the glasses while holding the glasses steady. It's a two-handed action, but once in place the goggles leave plenty of room for your glasses. There is not the sense that you are crunching your face. These function well and are a good value for the money.

Well made & reasonably priced eye protection.
I purchased these for working in my wood shop & working on the house but their design would definitely work in the event of a wildfire. I spent a lot of time comparing goggles in both quality and price point. I chose to buy this brand due to its shape, construction and the elastic band it uses. As soon as they were delivered to my house, I got them out and fit tested them with and without my glasses, over a baseball hats and over my old fire helmet (from my 34 year career in the California fire service). So far so good but time will tell. I've already used them while cutting and shaping wood on a table saw, miter saw and router table. They did exactly what I needed them to do and worked well in tandem with dust masks and respirators. No pair of goggles, regardless of cost, will do everything, block all smoke/dust and be fog-free. Most every pair of goggles I've owned needed some type of modification. A good anti-fog would be my first thought for these and maybe a protective cover when in storage. It would be great if Sellstrom offered replacement lenses on their page. It's inevitable that the original lens will get scratched or damaged in some way. While I could just buy another pair of goggles, it would be nice to have a couple extra replacement lenses on hand.I will revisit my review after some time using these goggles to give more insight into have they hold up, perform, etc.

Fog problem
Why did you pick this product vs others?:They fog so muchhhhhhhh I don’t get how. I was too late to return but I’m always having to take off and wipe every 2 minutes it’s so annoying. They fit good and the lens color is perfect but holy fog! My dirt bike goggles never do this

Bought To Use After Getting PRK/Lasik Eye Surgery
I had corrective eye surgery done. I wasn't supposed to be around smoke, dust, etc. That includes a lot of things like dirt biking, using my leaf blower, anything in general that was going to expose me to dust or smoke - which included grilling and using my smoker. Screech! Halt? I want the best outcome for this eye surgery but the grill and smoker is tough. I generally grill every night to get some lean protein. I'm exposed to this smoke not only close to the appliance, but since they are in a semi-enclosed porch with a small hole to the attic to my house. I also used them as I wanted to plant some new flowers in a flower bed. I have a small rotor tiller and when I use it there will be some dusty/dirt kick-up. Used these while I was doing that to keep any dirt/dust from getting into my eye. The thing I was most impressed with is that it was hot while I was rotor-tilling and planting these flowers. I was sweating a lot. No sweat ever made it to my eyes while wearing these and they did not fog up at all!So for no other reason - got these so I could grill/smoke food and do dusty yard work after corrective eye surgery. I will admit, I did purchase another pair of goggles like this not available on Amazon. Full-fledged forest fireman goggles from Ft Collins, CO. But...I didn't realize they wouldn't arrive till several days after my surgery. So these were a temporary fix. No 5 star as they aren't the best.
