sas safety nsx turbo safety glasses β€” what the listing actually specifies

What to check before you buy

Impact protection and splash protection are different tests. ANSI Z87.1 rates spectacles for impact, but only a device marked for splash (D3) is evaluated against a chemical splash hazard; safety glasses with open sides do not qualify, and a face shield is a secondary protector worn over primary eye protection rather than instead of it.

Z87 versus Z87+
The Z87 marking means the product meets ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. The plus sign indicates it passed the high-impact test. Both the lens and the frame carry markings.
Lens tint against the environment
Clear is for indoor and low light, gray for bright sun without color distortion, amber for contrast in low light. Tinted lenses indoors are a hazard, not a preference.
Anti-fog is a real specification
Fogged lenses get removed, and removed glasses protect nothing. Anti-fog coatings vary widely and wear out with cleaning.
Coverage and fit
Wrap-around designs address the side entry path that flat lenses leave open. Gaps at the temple and brow are where particles get in.

What the Z87.1 marking on the frame means

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is a marking standard as much as a test standard: what the device passed is stamped on it. Z87 alone is basic impact; Z87+ is high impact, tested with a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 feet per second and a pointed drop weight. The plus sign is the difference between eyewear rated for grinding and eyewear rated for dust.

Hazard letters follow: D3 splash and droplet, D4 dust, D5 fine dust, W with a shade number for welding, U for UV scale, L for visible light filter, R for infrared. The frame and the lens carry marks independently, and a frame rated Z87+ fitted with an unrated lens is not rated eyewear.

Fit is the part that fails first

Eye protection only works while it is in front of the eyes. The most common failures are not impact failures - they are eyewear pushed up onto the forehead because it fogged, slid, or pinched at the temples over a shift. Adjustable temple length and a frame matched to face width do more for real protection than a higher impact rating on eyewear that comes off.

Side protection is part of the requirement, not an extra. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 eye protection must provide side protection where there is a hazard from flying objects, which is why a rated frame carries integral side shields or a wrap-around lens rather than clip-ons.

The trade-offs behind this choice are worked through in amber vs clear lens safety glasses, anti fog safety glasses guide, anti fog vs anti scratch safety glasses, best face shields, best face shields for welding grinding and cutting.

The rest of the range sits in 3m safety glasses, 3m virtua safety glasses, anti fog safety glasses.

Unexpectedly Pleased
I needed to order a pair of safety goggles. There are 10,000 to choose from on Amazon. I went back to a store I ordered from once before called Mega Mart and I was surprised at how perfect they are. They fit well, sturdy, and seemingly shatter resistant. I thought all goggles were basically the same but somehow these seem better than any I've had before, and I've been through my share. That's two purchases from Mega Mart and both were affordable and delivered timely and safely. I may not be a fan of safety glasses but I am now a dedicated customer of Mega Mart. PGR
