EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.5/5 β€” WC Safety Review of the Moldex MX-6, a comfort-first NRR 27 passive muff with PVC-free cushions.
Editorial assessment by the WC Safety Editorial Team, based on published Moldex specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Moldex MX-6 (6130) is a passive over-the-head earmuff rated NRR 27 to ANSI S3.19, with PVC-free cushions the listing describes as non-conductive, a roomy earcup, and a padded band for comfort-first, full-shift wear. It sits in the middle of Moldex's MX line β€” more comfort and isolation than the budget MX-5, without jumping to the cap-mount MX-7 β€” for workers who cannot stand the squeeze of a cheap muff by lunchtime.

Why the Moldex MX-6 is a comfort-first passive muff

A muff only protects when it stays on, and comfort is what keeps it there through a full shift. The MX-6 leans into that with a roomy ear cup, a padded over-the-head band, and Moldex's PVC-free cushions, all delivering certified NRR 27 to ANSI S3.19. It lands in the upper-moderate noise band β€” air tools, mowers, routers β€” and sits in the middle of the MX line as the comfort upgrade over the budget MX-5 without the cap-mount format of the MX-7. As ear muffs go, this is the comfort-first passive pick, and the passive ear muffs guide and NRR explainer cover how the ratings work. It is the muff for workers who wear protection all day.

Safety first: the listed NRR 27 is a laboratory rating β€” real-world attenuation is typically lower because fit and seal vary, and anything that breaks the cushion seal (safety-glasses arms, long hair, a poor fit) cuts protection further. The PVC-free cushions are described as non-conductive, but treat that as a material note rather than a certified dielectric rating. Match the muff to your measured noise under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 and pair muffs with plugs when the noise climbs. Check your exposure with the OSHA 1910.95 guide and the when-do-you-need-hearing-protection guide.

What the Moldex MX-6 listing documents

From the published specs: NRR 27 certified to ANSI S3.19; an over-the-head passive design; PVC-free cushions described as non-conductive; a roomy earcup and padded band; and the 6130 large, black/green format. These are true over-the-head earmuffs and genuine nrr 27 earmuffs β€” comfort-first pvc-free earmuffs for full-shift wear.

How the Moldex MX-6 compares to other ear muffs

For the budget Moldex sibling, the Moldex MX-5; for a value NRR 27 muff, the Pyramex PM3010 or low-profile Pyramex PM9010; for headgear compatibility, the behind-the-head Peltor Optime 101 or cap-mount Pyramex CM6010; and for situational awareness, the electronic Howard Leight Impact Sport. The construction muffs guide compares picks.

Choosing the right hearing protection for your noise

Muffs, plugs, and doubling up all have a place. For the full range, the hearing protection collection and best hearing protection guide; for jobsite noise, the construction hearing collection; for in-ear options, the foam ear plugs collection and plugs-vs-muffs guide; and for the loudest work, the highest-NRR guide and NRR 33 plugs.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The comfort-first MX-6 suits shops, plants, landscaping crews, and general construction where full-shift comfort at NRR 27 matters β€” see awareness options in the electronic vs passive guide if you also need to hear speech. Its PVC-free cushions and roomy cups earn their keep on long days, so confirm each wearer gets a full seal and retire any muff whose cushions have hardened. For crew orders, quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account β€” volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations, with the walkthrough linked in our footer.

Easy on the ears, tough on the top of the head
A few years ago I bought a pair of Howard Leight by Honeywell Leightning L3 Shooting Earmuffs to wear while mowing. Although the cups felt fine at first, after less than two hours, they felt like they were crushing my ears. I bought these because the cups were supposed to be larger. They are. I can wear them for extended periods without hurting my ears. Unfortunately, either the padding on the headband is not as good as that on the Howard Leight pair or the extra 2.1 ounces makes a big difference in comfort. Rather than hurting my ears, these hurt the top of my head after a couple of hours use. The noise attenuation seems to be about the same for both pairs.

Very comfy
Very comfortable and good sound attenuation. Excellent for when my children decide to scream as loud as they can when they don’t want to do their homework. I noticed my daughter’s high pitched screaming interacts with the sides of my eyeglasses and the sound gets transmitted through, however.Okβ€”I’m also an industrial hygienist and have evaluated a variety of ear muffs. These really are good
