EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.3/5WC Safety Review β€” Moldex 6870 Meteors Cordless Earplugs

Best For: corded reusable flanged hearing protection at NRR 33 dB in a low-profile uncorded design.

Not For: non-noise hazards, or noise that earplugs alone can't bring under ~85 dBA (add earmuffs).

Bottom Line: a practical reusable flanged plug at NRR 33 dB β€” the uncorded low-profile fit suits tight spaces and high-volume single-use.

Moldex 6870 Meteors Cordless Earplugs Overview

The Moldex 6870 Meteors Cordless Earplugs are cordless reusable flanged ear plugs from Moldex, rated NRR 33 dB. With no cord to catch or snag, they keep a low profile for tight and confined spaces β€” the most economical choice for high-volume single-use. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The Moldex 6870 Meteors belong to the cordless ear plugs range and the NRR 33 ear plugs group. They are reusable and washable across many shifts; for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 33 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 33 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~82 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~87 dBA after derating Good fit
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~77 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the Moldex 6870 Meteors?

Buy them if you want reusable flanged hearing protection in a low-profile uncorded design at NRR 33 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare 6430 Alphas, 6450 Jetz, 6598 BattlePlugs. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The Moldex 6870 Meteors reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Industrial & construction noise

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a low-profile uncorded NRR 33 plug that won’t snag in tight spaces.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

They are reusable and washable across many shifts.

How do I insert the Moldex 6870 Meteors?

To fit them, push the pre-molded flanges gently into the canal until sealed; no rolling needed. A proper seal is what delivers the rated protection.

Best ones I have found
Best disposable ear plugs I have ever used, been using them for over a decade. 95% of the time they're the same size, every now and then one will be a bit softer/smaller, I put it in my smaller ear

inconsistent material
Individual packages are great - super handy when travelingSize is consistentMATERIAL IS INCONSISTENTSome are way too soft, just bend and do not extend into the ear far enough to workSome are way too firm and will not compress enough to fit into the ear canalThe rest are fineBackground - I've been through 400 pairs over 10 years (two purchases of 200)This quality variability indicates a mfg process that is out of control

My personal favorite
I've worn these for several years in an industrial setting and I've found them to be very comfortable and also provide excellent noise reduction. I would say that these are a particularly good fit for smaller ear canals although they would probably also wear well with larger ear canals as well.

GREAT PURCHASE!
I have small ear canals so I try to buy the smaller ones--these are still a little big but I can cut them down a little with scissors and they work VERY well! I re-use them a few nights before having to change them out, so this box is lasting me a LONG time! GREAT PURCHASE!

Yes! MIST comfy!
I’ve tried many earplugs! These are by far the best and most comfortable! Am on my third box of 250 pairs! I also re-use them several times and have never had an issue! 100% recommend for light sleepers and people living with snorers! Life and marriage savers!

hurts my ears now
I have been buying this brand, and only this brand, of earplugs for over a decade because I am obsessed with them. They were always the best earplugs I have ever used. Recently, I bought a new box and it seems they have changed their "formula" for manufacturing. I don't know if they are using cheaper/different chemicals or what, but after a single use these earplugs make my ear canals BURN intensely now. The skin where the earplugs rub against is extremely sore and raw and it's quite painful, which has never happened in the past with this brand. There was also an intensely strong chemical smell immediately upon opening them, which never existed before. So my theory is they switched to cheaper chemicals that make my ear canals burn now and it's really unfortunate because these are my favorite earplugs and I wanted to be a lifelong customer. I have to find earplugs that are free of chemicals/irritants now...

the contour lets me sleep with them in
Love these earplugs. I always carry a pair in my wallet (for the subway, a bar, etc) and always wear them for flights. also, I've been sleeping with these earplugs most nights for 2 years, and haven't had any injuries, like a wax impaction.these block out as much noise as the other earplugs of the brand, but the contour really helps for wearing these frequently and for lengthy duration.

The best earplugs made!
Fabulous! I can sleep! I have been considered an earplug connoisseur by my family for over 30 years. Having a baby(even if years ago) changed my ability to sleep. The lightest of sounds trigger an adrenaline surge telling my body to β€œCheck The Baby!” I have tried numerous brands and varieties. These have a little ridge that enables easy removal after a peaceful night’s rest.
