EDITORIAL REVIEW — Louisville Ladder 16-foot Fiberglass Extension Ladder, 300-Pound Load Capacity, Type IA

Where the model sits in the range

The 16-foot is the compact end of Louisville's fiberglass extension pair: Type IA 300-lb duty rating, non-conductive rails — sized for single-story eaves, gutters, and utility access with a working reach a person can actually manage alone.

Sizing rule: the ladder must top the support point by the overlap the manual requires, and fiberglass is the electrical-work default. The 24-footer covers two-story reach — buying short to save money is how people work off the top rung.

Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

Amazon customer rating: 4.5 / 5 - WC Safety review of the Louisville Ladder 16-foot Fiberglass Extension Ladder, 300-Pound Load Capacity, Type IA.

The Louisville Ladder 16-foot Fiberglass Extension Ladder, 300-Pound Load Capacity, Type IA is one of our picks for the ladder lineup. Everything below comes straight from the manufacturer's published listing - specs, capacities, and dimensions are theirs, not ours.

Ladder selection starts with the duty rating - the ANSI Type stamped on the label is the working-load ceiling including you, your tools, and anything carried. Fiberglass rails are the default around electrical work because they are non-conductive when clean and dry. Set up per the label and OSHA 1926.1053, and keep three points of contact.

Key details, quoted from the manufacturer's published listing:

  • NON-CONDUCTIVE: Crafted with fiberglass for non-conductive safety assurance, this extension ladder combines strength and durability.
  • MAXLOCK RUNG LOCK: Engineered with your safety in mind, custom engineered specifically for our extension ladders from a patented, advanced molecular polymer.
  • QUICKLATCH SYSTEM: Seamlessly offers a straightforward and intuitive solution for our extension ladders, securing both the fly and base sections during extension.
  • SAFE AND STABLE: Steel Swivel Safety Shoe with metal shield specifically designed for extension ladders, ensures stability and safety even on uneven surfaces.
  • STURDY AND STRONG: With its 300-Pound capacity, elegant design and smooth finish, you won’t find a more durable, reliable 16-foot Extension Ladder.

What to check before you buy

On ladder work the ladder itself is the control, not a last line of defence. The duty rating has to cover the worker plus tools plus everything carried up, the height has to suit the task without standing on the top cap, and the setup has to be right: 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(5)(i) sets the 4:1 angle for non-self-supporting ladders on construction sites, and 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(1) and 1910.23(c)(11) require side rails to extend at least 3 feet above the landing. Where the work can be done from a platform, scaffold or lift instead, that is the better control — a fall arrest system only catches the fall you did not design out.

Duty rating, not just height
The ANSI duty rating covers the worker plus tools plus materials. Type IAA is rated 375 lb, IA 300 lb, I 250 lb, II 225 lb and III 200 lb. Add up everything that goes up the ladder.
Material vs. the hazard
Fiberglass side rails are non-conductive and are the default anywhere near live electrical work. Aluminum is lighter but conducts.
Working height vs. ladder length
Usable height is always less than the ladder length once you account for the overlap on extension ladders and the top steps you should not stand on.
Feet and footing
Slip-resistant feet only work on a firm, level base. Soft ground, sloped surfaces and smooth tile all need attention before the first step.
