- Contact heat versus radiant heat
- Gloves are tested against distinct hazards - contact heat, convective heat, radiant heat, molten metal splash. A high rating in one does not imply protection in another.
- Time at temperature
- Heat ratings are time-limited. A glove rated for brief contact at a temperature will not protect for sustained handling at the same temperature.
- Cuff length
- Most burns in hot work happen to the wrist and forearm, above the glove. Cuff length is often the deciding factor.
- Moisture is dangerous
- A damp glove conducts heat rapidly and can produce steam against the skin. Wet heat-resistant gloves are removed from service until dry.
