Huberd's Shoe Grease leather conditioner and waterproofer

A safety toe is impact and compression protection, not electrical isolation. ASTM F2413 treats them as separate ratings: only a boot carrying the EH mark is tested for secondary protection against open electrical circuits, and that protection is voided by wet soles, worn outsoles or embedded metal. Work on or near energised parts is controlled by a zero-energy state and the NFPA 70E arc-flash program first; footwear is the last layer, never the plan.

The Huberd's Shoe Grease leather conditioner and waterproofer is a beeswax-and-pine-tar formula that has been in production since 1921. In one step it softens, conditions, and waterproofs heavy work-boot leather, saddles, and gear. If you run thick, stiff leather boots that need to be broken in and kept water-shedding, this is the old-school grease that does it.

Boot care comes down to two jobs. Conditioning restores the oils that keep leather flexible so it does not dry out and crack; waterproofing adds a barrier that sheds water. The Huberd's pine-tar-and-beeswax grease penetrates thick leather to soften and condition it, then leaves a wax layer that repels water, so a single tin covers both jobs on a rugged waterproof work boot or any full-grain pair from the safety footwear range.

How often to treat: condition when the leather feels stiff or dry, or after a soaking and full dry-out. During heavy outdoor use that can be every few weeks; for lighter wear, monthly or less. Apply to clean, dry leather, work it in, and let it cure. One caution: like any oil-and-wax grease, Huberd's darkens leather and is for smooth full-grain leather only. Keep it off suede and nubuck, where the grease mats the nap. For napped leather, use a dedicated suede and nubuck spray.

It shines on thick leather logger and work boots such as the Irish Setter Mesabi logger boot, the Carolina 8-inch logger boot, or the Wolverine Floorhand steel-toe boot.

Which boots it fits, and how to use it

Use Huberd's Shoe Grease when you need to break in and waterproof thick, stiff leather. Clean and dry the boots, apply a thin coat, work it into the leather and seams, and let it cure. Expect the leather to darken and to carry the pine-tar scent for a while. It is a natural fit for rugged pairs in the waterproof work boots collection and for leather steel-toe boots that live outdoors. Want to keep the leather's original color? Use the won't-darken Bickmore Bick 4 conditioner instead, or the water-based Nikwax Conditioner for Leather if you want no fumes. For heavy salt and chemical duty, compare the Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP. See the full boot care and waterproofing collection and the footwear accessories hub.

How Huberd's compares to our other boot care

Product Base Darkens? Best for
Huberd's Shoe Grease Beeswax + pine tar Yes Softening and waterproofing thick leather
Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP Beeswax + oil Yes Heavy-duty salt and chemical resistance
Nikwax Conditioner Water-based Minimal Sponge-on conditioning without fumes
Bickmore Bick 4 Cleaner + conditioner No Clean and condition without darkening

Choose Huberd's when your priority is softening stiff, thick leather and speeding break-in; choose the Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP when salt and chemical resistance top the list. Both pastes darken leather. If color retention matters, use the won't-darken Bickmore Bick 4. New to this? Start with our best boot care products guide.
