What exactly does N95 mean?
N95 is a NIOSH particulate filter class under 42 CFR Part 84. N means the filter is not resistant to oil-based aerosols, and 95 means it captures at least 95 percent of airborne non-oil particles. It is the most common filtering facepiece tier, well suited to dust, fibers, and many fine non-oil mists, but not to gases or vapors.
N95 vs P100: when do I need to step up?
N95 blocks 95 percent of non-oil particulates; P100 blocks 99.97 percent and is oil-proof, the same efficiency as HEPA. Choose P100 (such as the 8293) when oil-based aerosols are present, when the particulate is highly hazardous, or when you want maximum filtration. For ordinary non-oil dust at moderate levels, N95 is typically sufficient and easier to breathe through.
Is an N95 enough for paint, solvents, or chemical fumes?
No. An N95 is a particulate filter only; it does not stop gases or vapors such as solvent or paint fumes. Some models add nuisance-level organic vapor or acid gas relief, but that only reduces odors below the OSHA permissible exposure limit. For real vapor exposure, use a reusable respirator with a NIOSH-approved chemical cartridge matched to the contaminant.
How do I make sure an N95 actually protects me?
Protection depends on the seal. Press the respirator firmly to bare skin, mold the nosepiece, and do a user seal check by exhaling and inhaling to feel for leaks. Facial hair at the sealing surface prevents a seal. In regulated workplaces, OSHA 1910.134 requires fit testing and a medical evaluation before relying on a tight-fitting respirator.
How long does an N95 last and when should I throw it away?
N95 filtering facepieces are single-use. Discard one when it is damaged, soiled, or deformed, when breathing becomes noticeably harder, or when you cannot maintain a good seal. Replace it after contaminated or aerosol-generating work, and never share it. Unused respirators stored clean and dry in original packaging keep their performance until that point.
