N95 Respirators (2026)
An N95 is the most common respirator in the world and the most commonly misunderstood. The letter means it is not resistant to oil aerosols; the number means it filters at least 95 percent of the test particulate. NIOSH certifies them under 42 CFR Part 84, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 assigns them a protection factor of 10 while requiring fit testing, medical evaluation, and a written program wherever they are required at work. How to choose an N95
How do you confirm you have NIOSH-approved N95 masks?
Check the facepiece itself, not the box. A genuine unit prints four things directly on the respirator: the NIOSH name or logo, the TC approval number in the format TC-84A-XXXX, the manufacturer or brand name, and the model or part number. If any of those are missing, if the approval number does not resolve, or if the mask has ear loops rather than head straps, treat it as suspect — NIOSH-approved N95s use two head straps, not ear loops. Cup, flat-fold, or low-profile?
These are fit strategies, not quality tiers. Cup-style holds a fixed dome and suits faces it happens to match; it is rigid, which some people find more stable and others find impossible to seal. Flat-fold designs like the 3M Aura flex into a three-panel shape that conforms to more face geometries and store flat in a pocket. Low-profile and handystrap variants reduce bulk for work in tight spaces or under a face shield. Does a small N95 mask actually exist, or is that just marketing?
It exists, and it matters. Manufacturer-designated small sizes in this collection include the Moldex 2201N95, the Moldex 2601N95 low-profile, and the 3M 1860S. This is a genuine safety issue rather than a comfort preference: a standard-size facepiece on a small face leaks at the cheeks regardless of strap tension, and the wearer will fail a fit test on it every time. Valved or unvalved?
An exhalation valve vents warm humid air, cutting heat buildup and lens fogging on strenuous work. When is an N95 the wrong choice?
Three cases. Oil aerosols — machining coolant, cutting fluid, oil-based paint mist — degrade N-class media, so those need R or P class. Gases and vapors pass straight through any particulate filter, so solvents and paint fumes need a cartridge respirator. And an N95 does nothing about oxygen deficiency; if the atmosphere may be oxygen-deficient or IDLH, only supplied air will do. A dust mask respirator is for dust.
Regulatory context: approval, fit testing, and KN95
NIOSH approval covers a complete assembly and is what makes an N95 a respirator in a US workplace. That has a commercial consequence people trip over constantly: KN95 is certified to a Chinese standard and FFP2 to a European one — neither is NIOSH-approved, so neither satisfies an OSHA respiratory protection program however comparable the filtration claim appears — the three-way comparison is worked through in N95 vs KN95 vs P100. Beyond that, no N95 is compliant on its own. OSHA requires medical evaluation, then fit testing on the exact make, model, and size before first use and at least annually, plus a user seal check every time it goes on, and facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator entirely. N95s are the cheapest respirator per unit and often the most expensive per year, because a crew typically consumes one per person per shift in dusty work. Two things control real cost without touching protection. Buy the size that actually fits your people — a case of the wrong size is a total write-off, since fit is not adjustable — and standardize on one model where you can, because fit testing is annual and per-model, so a two-model crew doubles that recurring line item. What exactly does N95 mean?
N means not resistant to oil aerosols; 95 means the filter captures at least 95 percent of the test particulate. It is a NIOSH class defined under 42 CFR Part 84 and describes particulate filtration only.
How do I verify a respirator is NIOSH approved?
Look on the facepiece for the NIOSH name or logo, a TC approval number formatted TC-84A-XXXX, the manufacturer name, and the model number. Missing markings, an unresolvable approval number, or ear loops instead of head straps all indicate a product that is not a NIOSH-approved N95.
Is a KN95 the same as an N95?
No. KN95 is certified to a Chinese standard and is not NIOSH-approved, so it does not satisfy a US workplace respiratory protection program regardless of how its filtration claim compares.
Is there such a thing as a K95 or N94 mask?
No. Neither designation exists in any standard — K95 and NK95 are misspellings of KN95, and there is no N94 class. NIOSH classes are N, R, or P combined with 95, 99, or 100.
N95 vs P100: when do I need to step up?
When oil aerosols are present, since N-class is not oil resistant, or when an assigned protection factor of 10 does not bring measured exposure below the permissible limit. P100 is oil proof and filters at 99.97 percent, at the cost of higher breathing resistance.
Is an N95 enough for paint, solvents, or chemical fumes?
No. Vapors pass straight through a particulate filter. Spraying requires a cartridge respirator; an N95 only captures the paint mist, never the solvent vapor carrying it.
Do N95 respirators come in small sizes?
Yes — manufacturer-designated smalls include the Moldex 2201N95, Moldex 2601N95, and 3M 1860S. A standard size on a small face leaks at the cheeks no matter how tight the straps, so sizing is a protection issue, not a comfort one.
Do N95s have ear loops?

How long does an N95 last and when should I throw it away?

Can I wash or disinfect an N95?
No. Washing, alcohol, and heat degrade the electrostatic charge the filter media relies on, reducing filtration without any visible change. Discard rather than clean.
Are valved N95s allowed everywhere?
No. The valve releases unfiltered exhaled air, so valved models are unsuitable in sterile fields, cleanrooms, food handling, and anywhere else source control is part of the requirement.
