Types of Fall Protection Lanyards

What does a shock-absorbing lanyard do, and when should I use one?
A shock-absorbing (energy-absorbing) lanyard contains a tear-away pack that extends during a fall to limit arrest forces on the body to OSHA's 1,800 lb maximum. Use one when you have an overhead or near-overhead anchor and adequate fall clearance below. With a standard 6 ft lanyard, total fall distance can exceed 18 ft, so verify clearance first.
What does a 100% tie-off (twin-leg) lanyard provide?
A 100% tie-off, or twin-leg, lanyard has two legs so you stay continuously connected while moving between anchor points: connect the second leg before disconnecting the first. Models like the ShockWave 2 and EZ-Stop 100% Tie-Off are ideal for climbing or traversing structures where you must transition anchors without ever being unattached.
How much fall clearance do I need with a shock-absorbing lanyard?
You must account for lanyard length, energy-absorber deployment (often up to about 3.5 ft), the worker's height below the D-ring, plus a safety margin. With a 6 ft lanyard this commonly totals roughly 18.5 ft of required clearance. If you cannot guarantee that distance, use a self-retracting lifeline, which arrests faster and needs far less clearance.
What is a tie-back lanyard and when is it appropriate?
A tie-back lanyard, such as the Protecta PRO Tie-Back models, lets you wrap the lanyard around a beam or structural member and clip back to itself, eliminating a separate anchor connector. Only use lanyards specifically rated and marked for tie-back use, and anchor to a member that meets the 5,000 lb anchorage requirement under OSHA 1926.502.
Can I reuse a shock-absorbing lanyard after a fall?
No. Once the energy absorber has deployed or the impact indicator shows activation, the lanyard must be removed from service immediately and destroyed or returned per the manufacturer, never reused. Also inspect lanyards before each use for cut or frayed webbing, damaged stitching, and corroded or deformed snap hooks, plus a documented annual competent-person inspection.
