Kidde COPDLG Explosive Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Plug-In (UL 2034 5th Ed) Overview

The Kidde COPDLG explosive gas and carbon monoxide alarm is a plug-in home alarm that detects both carbon monoxide and explosive gas, specifically natural gas (methane) and propane. It plugs into a 120V AC outlet with AA backup batteries, sounds an 85-dB alarm, and shows the CO level in ppm on a backlit digital display, or the word GAS when explosive gas is present.

As the Kidde COPDLG, this explosive gas and CO alarm gives low-level CO alerts starting around 30 to 70 ppm to help protect vulnerable people. As a natural gas and propane detector it adds combustible-gas coverage, and as a low-level CO alarm and plug-in combination gas alarm it is a strong single-unit home safety choice. It is UL 2034 5th Edition tested and ETL Listed.

This is a residential alarm, not a smart WiFi alarm, an air quality monitor, or an industrial instrument. Compare it against carbon monoxide alarms and detectors, the wider Kidde CO alarms range, and gas leak detectors, or a smart CO alarm if you want app alerts, before ordering.

What This Alarm Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Homes with gas appliances Purpose-built Detects CO plus natural gas and propane in one unit.
Protecting vulnerable people Strong Low-level CO alerts around 30 to 70 ppm.
Clear hazard identification Strong Display shows CO ppm or the word GAS.
Outage-resilient protection Strong AA backup keeps it running in a power cut.
Smart alerts or air-quality data Not suitable No WiFi or app; choose a smart CO alarm for that.

A combination CO and gas alarm is a life-safety device, so respond fast and correctly. If the display reads GAS, treat it as a gas leak: do not operate electrical switches or anything that could spark, get everyone outside, and call your gas utility from outside. If it alarms for CO, move everyone to fresh air and call for help. This is a residential early-warning alarm; it is not built for occupational settings where carbon monoxide can climb to IDLH concentrations or where combustible gas needs industrial monitoring, so use the right tool for each environment. Install and place it per the Kidde manual and local codes, remembering that natural gas rises and propane sinks, keep it plugged in with fresh AA backup batteries, and replace the unit at end of life. Learn placement and CO risks in our CO detector placement guide and carbon monoxide exposure symptoms guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gases does the Kidde COPDLG detect?

It detects carbon monoxide plus explosive gas, specifically natural gas (methane) and propane. The digital display shows the CO level in ppm, or the word GAS when it senses combustible gas, so you know which hazard triggered the alarm.

What is low-level CO alerting?

The COPDLG alerts earlier, around 30 to 70 ppm, with a distinct light and sound pattern to help protect vulnerable people such as young children, older adults, pregnant women, and pets. At higher levels it uses a separate pattern to signal danger for everyone.

Is this a smart or WiFi alarm?

No. The COPDLG is a standalone plug-in alarm with a local horn and digital display; it does not connect to WiFi or a phone app and does not monitor air quality. If you want app alerts, choose a smart CO alarm instead.

How is it powered?

It plugs into a 120V AC outlet and uses AA backup batteries to keep working during a power outage. The rotating plug lets it fit vertical or horizontal outlets so the display stays readable.

Is it certified?

Yes. Kidde states the COPDLG is tested to UL 2034 5th Edition, the current CO alarm standard, and is ETL Listed. It also carries a 7-year limited warranty. Confirm current markings on the product packaging.

What should I do if it alarms for explosive gas?

If it shows GAS, treat it as a gas leak: do not operate electrical switches, lights, or anything that could spark, get everyone outside, and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not re-enter until it is declared safe.

What should I do if it alarms for CO?

Treat a CO alarm as an emergency: move everyone to fresh air immediately, call emergency services or your gas utility, and do not re-enter until it is cleared. Then have the CO source found and fixed by a qualified professional.

How loud is the alarm?

It sounds a loud 85-decibel alarm, which is designed to be heard through a home. Combined with the backlit digital display and LED indicators, it gives both an audible and a visual warning of a CO or gas event.

Is this a smoke detector?

No. It detects carbon monoxide and explosive gas, not smoke. For fire protection, use a dedicated smoke alarm or a combination smoke and CO alarm in addition to this unit.

Where should I install a combination CO and gas alarm?

Follow the Kidde manual and local codes. Placement can differ for CO and for combustible gas, since natural gas rises and propane sinks, so consider the gas type and appliance locations. Confirm the recommended mounting height in the manual.

Is it a replacement for an industrial gas monitor?

No. It is a residential alarm. Workplaces with combustible-gas or high carbon monoxide hazards need occupational gas-detection instruments and procedures, not a home alarm. Match the device to the environment.

How long does it last?

The alarm carries a 7-year limited warranty, and CO and gas sensors have a finite service life, so replace the unit per the end-of-life indication and the Kidde manual to keep protection current.

Peace of mind with a plug
This is one of those household items you hope you never actually hear, but you're glad is there. The setup is incredibly straightforward since it just plugs into a standard outlet, and the included extension cord gives you plenty of flexibility on where to actually mount the sensor. The digital display is a nice touch, giving you a clear reading rather than just a flashing light. It also has a battery backup, so it doesn't quit on you if the power goes out. It’s a small price to pay for a unit that covers both CO and explosive gas leaks in one footprint.- Extremely easy to install and move if needed.- Long extension cord allows for ideal placement away from the outlet.- Digital display provides clear, real-time levels.- Battery backup keeps it running during power failures.Verdict: 5/5. Simple, effective, and flexible. It’s a must-have for any home with gas appliances.

Good quality and easy to use
We bought this because we had an odd smell in our bathroom and wanted to be sure it wasn’t any type of gas. This device is nice because it detects several different types of gases and is easy to plug in. The only hard part I had a difficult time with was trying to open the battery compartment but once you get that open everything you need (including the battery) is there and easy to plug in and then you’re all set. Id buy again.

Does the job
We’ve had this brand for a few years. Once the sensor dies, it will flash β€œend” for end of life. It picks up gas well. We tested it with propane. Alarm is quite loud. Standard size. Back up battery

For Peace of Mind/Safety
I've had this exact same alarm for over 2 years. We heat mostly with propane. It gives me peace of mind, it easily fits into a low outlet in our living room. The only time it has gone off thankfully is when the 9 volt battery got low and it let us know as alarms do that it needed to be replaced. When we tested it, the alarm is loud just like you'd want it to be. The battery lasted a long time. I recently bought this new one for my granddaughter who has small children because she worried about gas leakage. Now she also has peace of mind. With small children it's best not to place it at a low outlet so it's in the kitchen at an upper outlet. So worth the cost which is reasonable for what it does.

Saved our lives!!
Saved our lives! We had a CO scare in our basement after running our generator and if not for this alarm, we surely would have met a different fate. I recommended having one or two on every floor of your house if possible! Accurate readings that matched what the fire department used when they came to our home as well and very user friendly. Don’t delay buy it today! Could be the difference between life and death.

Every home owner absolutely MUST have one of this in their home to protect the ones you love!
Long story. The gas company notified me of a leak on my property. The pinpointed it to be underneath my house! I about fainted! I could not smell gas, the technician could not smell gas. I asked him what could I do in the event this should ever happen again. He said "Get a leak detector". I had no idea such a device existed! I ordered this on minutes after he said that and I had it installed by the next afternoon. I highly recommend on for every homeowner who has natural gas or propane service! Installation was a breeze.
