What to check before you buy
On ladder work the ladder itself is the control, not a last line of defence. The duty rating has to cover the worker plus tools plus everything carried up, the height has to suit the task without standing on the top cap, and the setup has to be right: 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(5)(i) sets the 4:1 angle for non-self-supporting ladders on construction sites, and 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(1) and 1910.23(c)(11) require side rails to extend at least 3 feet above the landing. Where the work can be done from a platform, scaffold or lift instead, that is the better control — a fall arrest system only catches the fall you did not design out.
- Duty rating, not just height
- The ANSI duty rating covers the worker plus tools plus materials. Type IAA is rated 375 lb, IA 300 lb, I 250 lb, II 225 lb and III 200 lb. Add up everything that goes up the ladder.
- Material vs. the hazard
- Fiberglass side rails are non-conductive and are the default anywhere near live electrical work. Aluminum is lighter but conducts.
- Working height vs. ladder length
- Usable height is always less than the ladder length once you account for the overlap on extension ladders and the top steps you should not stand on.
- Feet and footing
