Nightstick XPP-5422GMX Intrinsically Safe Flashlight overview

The Nightstick XPP-5422GMX Intrinsically Safe Flashlight is a UL-913, Class I Div 1 dual-light built for hazardous locations — refineries, chemical plants, oil and gas, utilities, grain handling, and confined-space entry where a light cannot be allowed to become an ignition source. It's ETLus-listed intrinsically safe, rated Class I Div 1 Groups A-D T3 for flammable gases and Class II & III Div 1 Groups E-G for combustible dust, above and below ground. Two independent light sources — a focused 235-lumen spot rated to 187 meters and a 130-lumen floodlight, or 300 lumens combined — cover distance and close work from one compact body. For where it sits among job-site lights, see our best work lights guide and the work lighting collection.

The magnets are the quiet hero: one in the base of the handle and one in the pocket clip let you stick the light to any steel surface and work hands-free. It runs on 3 AA batteries (sold separately), carries an IP-67 dust/waterproof rating with impact and chemical resistance, and includes a removable lanyard. If you need a single-beam version, the XPP-5420G is the sibling, the XPP-5422GMXA is a closely related dual-light variant, and the Streamlight Dualie 3AA is the comparable intrinsically safe dual-light from another brand. Because these lights live in the same hazardous atmospheres as gas monitoring, most crews carry both — see our best personal gas detector guide.

Safety note — intrinsic safety stops ignition, not bad air.

This light is certified so it won't ignite a flammable atmosphere — but that is all intrinsic safety does. A hazardous location can still be oxygen-deficient or hold gas at IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) levels, so pair the light with atmospheric testing, ventilation, and, where required, supplied air or an SCBA. The certification prevents an ignition source; it is not a substitute for a gas monitor or a confined-space entry program.

Where it fits

It's a natural fit for hazardous-location and confined-space work — a compact, non-igniting light for entering tanks, vaults, and process areas where flammable gas or combustible dust may be present. It also earns a spot in general maintenance and emergency kits that occasionally cross into classified areas. Because it's part of a hazardous-location toolkit, it pairs with atmospheric monitoring from the gas-detector lineup — the 4-gas vs single-gas and combustible-gas detector guides help match the meter — and with intrinsically safe respiratory gear like the 3M Versaflo IS PAPR when the air itself is the hazard.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Genuine UL-913 / ETLus Class I Div 1 intrinsic safety
  • Dual-light: 235 lm spot (187 m) + 130 lm flood, 300 combined
  • Dual magnets for hands-free positioning
  • IP-67, impact/chemical resistant, 3 AA power
Keep in mind
  • Batteries (3 AA) not included
  • Approved battery types only — protects the IS rating
  • Not rechargeable (this model)
  • Intrinsic safety ≠ safe atmosphere; still test the air

Frequently asked questions

What safety certification does the XPP-5422GMX hold?

It is UL-913 intrinsically safe and ETLus-listed, rated Class I Div 1 Groups A-D T3 for flammable gases, Class II and III Div 1 Groups E-G T135°C for combustible dust, and Class I Zone 0 AEx/Ex ia IIC T3 Ga. That covers both above- and below-ground hazardous locations where explosive gases or dust may be present.

What does "intrinsically safe" actually mean?

Intrinsically safe means the device is engineered so it cannot release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite a specified flammable atmosphere, even in a fault condition. It is a certified rating (here, UL-913), not a marketing term, and it is different from the looser phrase "explosion-proof."

What is the dual-light design?

The light has two independent sources: a focused 235-lumen spot beam with a deep parabolic reflector for distance, and a 130-lumen unfocused floodlight for close-up work. Run either alone, or both together for a combined 300 lumens, using the dual body switches.

How far does the beam reach?

The 235-lumen spot beam is rated to about 187 meters, which is genuinely long-range for a compact AA light. The floodlight is designed for close, wide illumination rather than distance.

What batteries does it use, and are they included?

It runs on 3 AA batteries, which are not included. Using a quality alkaline or the battery type specified by Nightstick keeps it within its intrinsic-safety certification, so follow the manual on approved cells.

Where are the magnets, and what are they for?

There are dual magnets — one in the base of the handle and one in the pocket clip — for hands-free positioning against steel surfaces, so you can aim light at a task while keeping both hands on the work.

Is it waterproof and rugged?

Yes. It carries an IP-67 dustproof and waterproof rating, plus impact and chemical resistance, an engineered-polymer housing with a non-slip grip, and a removable lanyard.

Can I use it around combustible dust as well as gas?

Yes. The Class II and III Div 1 Groups E-G rating covers combustible dust locations in addition to the Class I gas rating, which is why it suits grain, coal, and similar dusty hazardous environments as well as fuel and chemical settings.

How does the GMX differ from the XPP-5420G or the GMXA?

The XPP-5422GMX is the dual-light model with dual magnets. The XPP-5420G is a single-beam intrinsically safe light, and the XPP-5422GMXA is a closely related dual-light variant — match the model to whether you need dual-light output and magnets.

Does being intrinsically safe make it safe to enter any hazardous area?

No. Intrinsic safety only means the light will not be an ignition source. It does nothing about breathable air or overall entry hazards, so it never replaces atmospheric testing, ventilation, or a confined-space entry program.

What jobs is it built for?

Oil and gas, refining, chemical processing, utilities, grain handling, and confined-space or hazardous-location work where a non-igniting light source is required. It's a common addition to a hazardous-location entry kit.

Can I use rechargeable AA batteries in it?

Follow Nightstick's manual: intrinsic-safety approval is tied to specified battery types, so substituting a different chemistry can void the rating. When in doubt, use the cells the manufacturer lists as approved.
