Howard Leight Quiet QD1 NRR 26 Corded Reusable Earplugs (Triple-Flange) Overview

The Howard Leight Quiet QD1 is a reusable, pre-molded triple-flange earplug molded from soft TPE, supplied corded so the pair stays tethered around the neck between tasks and is far less likely to be dropped on a shop floor. It carries a laboratory Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 26 dB per ANSI S3.19, which puts it in the mid-protection band β€” well-suited to most general-industry noise exposures without the over-attenuation that can cut a worker off from alarms and speech.

Because it is a washable, flanged plug rather than a single-use roll-down foam plug, the QD1 is sized to seal on insertion without the roll-and-hold technique foam requires. That makes it a practical choice for in-and-out jobs β€” machine tending, maintenance rounds, material handling β€” where workers pull plugs in and out repeatedly across a shift. Browse the full range of reusable ear plugs and corded ear plugs, or compare against foam ear plugs if your noise levels run higher.

Real-world protection is lower than the label. The NRR 26 figure comes from ideal lab fitting. Under OSHA's enforcement method for estimating protection at the 90 dBA permissible exposure limit (PEL), the field-adjusted value is (NRR βˆ’ 7) Γ· 2 = roughly 9.5 dB, and NIOSH applies its own derating to account for imperfect real-world fit (NIOSH derates labeled foam NRR by 25%, with steeper reductions for other plug types). Use the labeled NRR to compare products, but size your protection to the measured noise level on your job β€” see how to calculate NRR and what is NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 hearing conservation sets the 85 dBA action level and 90 dBA PEL that drive that decision.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
General-industry noise 85-95 dBA Strong fit NRR 26 covers most plants, warehouses, and shops; field-adjusted attenuation comfortably clears the 85 dBA action level for typical exposures.
Frequent in-and-out tasks (maintenance, machine tending) Strong fit Reusable flanged design re-seats fast without roll-down; the cord keeps the pair on the worker between insertions.
Workers who must hear alarms and speech Good fit Mid-band NRR 26 protects without the over-isolation of NRR 32-33 plugs, preserving situational awareness on the floor.
Very high noise above ~100 dBA Limited fit Step up to higher-rated foam or consider dual protection; see highest-NRR options for sustained heavy-impact noise.
Dusty or shared-tool environments Good fit Washable TPE flanges can be rinsed and reused, unlike single-use foam, but issue per-worker for hygiene.
Sleeping, swimming, or concerts Not intended This is an ANSI S3.19 industrial occupational plug; it is not marketed for water, sleep, or music-fidelity use.

Earplugs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number β€” real-world protection is lower. NIOSH derates foam by about 25%, and OSHA estimates protection as (NRR βˆ’ 7) Γ· 2. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 a hearing-conservation program is required at an 8-hour TWA of 85 dBA. Insert foam plugs correctly (roll, pull the ear up and back, hold) for the rated seal, and use dual protection with earmuffs in very high noise. See how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Reusable, washable TPE triple-flange design lowers cost-per-use versus single-use foam
  • Pre-molded flanges seal on insertion without the roll-down technique foam requires
  • Corded so the pair stays tethered between tasks and is less likely to be lost or dropped
  • NRR 26 (ANSI S3.19) suits the majority of general-industry noise without over-attenuating alarms and speech
  • Fast re-seating makes it practical for frequent in-and-out wear across a shift
Cons
  • NRR 26 is mid-band; very high or sustained heavy-impact noise may need a higher-rated or dual-protection setup
  • Flanged plugs fit a narrower range of ear canals than compressible foam, so fit-test before bulk ordering
  • Real-world attenuation is well below the labeled 26 dB once OSHA/NIOSH field derating is applied
  • Reusable plugs require cleaning and inspection; flanges must be replaced when stiff or damaged

How It Compares

Within Howard Leight's reusable and corded lineup, the Quiet QD1 (NRR 26) sits in the mid-protection band. If you need more attenuation, the disposable Howard Leight MAX-30 corded foam plug carries NRR 30 and the X-TREME XTR-1 reaches NRR 32, but both are single-use roll-down foam rather than washable flanged pods β€” better dB, higher ongoing cost, and a roll-down technique requirement. For a reusable alternative with similar fit philosophy, the 3M 1270 reusable corded earplugs (NRR 25, multi-flange) is the closest cross-brand match. If you run hotter noise and want a reusable corded pod, the Moldex 6985 Glide corded earplugs (NRR 31) step the rating up. Choose the QD1 when you want a tethered, washable, mid-NRR plug that re-seats quickly for in-and-out work; step up to foam when measured noise demands more headroom. Compare across the full hearing protection range to match the rating to your job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the Howard Leight Quiet QD1?

The Quiet QD1 is rated NRR 26 dB under ANSI S3.19. That is the EPA-labeled laboratory value; real-world protection is lower once OSHA or NIOSH field derating is applied, so size protection to your measured noise level.

Is the Quiet QD1 corded or uncorded?

This QD1 model is corded. The cord tethers the pair so they hang around the neck between tasks and are less likely to be dropped or lost on the floor. The uncorded sibling in the Quiet series is the QD30.

Is the Quiet QD1 reusable or single-use?

It is reusable. The soft TPE triple-flange plugs can be rinsed, inspected, and reused, which lowers cost-per-use versus single-use foam. Replace them when the flanges stiffen, tear, or no longer seal.

How much noise does NRR 26 actually block on the job?

Less than 26 dB. OSHA's field estimate at the 90 dBA PEL is (NRR-7)/2, which is about 9.5 dB for an NRR 26 plug. NIOSH applies its own derating to account for imperfect real-world fit. Use the label to compare products, not as your guaranteed field attenuation.

Will the QD1 protect me in a 95 dBA work area?

For most general-industry exposures in the 85-95 dBA range, NRR 26 provides adequate field-adjusted protection to get below the 85 dBA action level when worn correctly. For sustained noise above ~100 dBA, step up to a higher-rated plug or use dual protection. See our guide on calculating the NRR you need.

How is the QD1 different from foam roll-down earplugs?

The QD1 is a pre-molded flanged plug that seals on insertion, while foam plugs must be rolled down, inserted, and held while they expand. Foam often reaches higher NRRs and conforms to more canal shapes; the QD1 trades a little rating for fast, repeatable, roll-free insertion and reuse. Compare foam ear plugs if you need more dB.

Does the QD1 meet OSHA hearing conservation requirements?

Yes. As an ANSI S3.19 NRR-labeled plug it is suitable hearing protection under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95, which requires protectors once exposures reach the 85 dBA action level. Your program still has to verify that the field-adjusted attenuation brings each worker below the limit for their specific noise.

How do I insert the Quiet QD1 correctly?

Reach over your head, pull the ear up and back to straighten the canal, and push the flanged tip in until it seats and seals. Unlike foam there is no roll-down step. A proper seal is what delivers the rating, so check the fit feels snug and muffles sound evenly in both ears.

How does the QD1 compare to the 3M 1270 reusable corded plug?

Both are reusable corded multi-flange plugs in the mid-NRR band. The QD1 is NRR 26 and the 3M 1270 is NRR 25, so they are close in rating; the choice usually comes down to which flange profile seals better in your workers' ears. Fit-test both before a bulk order.

Can I wash and reuse the QD1 plugs?

Yes. Rinse the TPE flanges with mild soap and water, let them dry, and store them in the case or on the cord. Inspect before each use and discard any plug with cracked, stiff, or torn flanges, since a damaged seal reduces protection.

Should I choose the QD1 or a higher-NRR foam plug?

Choose the QD1 for reusable, tethered, roll-free wear in typical general-industry noise where mid-band NRR 26 is enough. Choose a higher-NRR foam plug, such as an NRR 30-33 option, when your measured noise is high or impact-heavy and you need more field headroom. Match the rating to the noise, not the highest number available.

Is the QD1 an Amazon affiliate purchase through WC Safety?

Yes. WC Safety is an Amazon Associate; the buy button sends you to Amazon to complete the order, and Amazon handles pricing, fulfillment, and shipping. We earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Great value, comfortable
I have rather small ear canals and these are super comfortable. No pain even after wearing for a few hours.

Hard center, not as expected
Thought these would work great, looking at their design. But wasn’t expecting that outer center piece to be hard & go through ear plug. I do have smaller ear canals, so find fully soft moldable plugs work better.

dissapointed
They go in too far to the ear canal. They are too slippery and work their way out during work. Not very effective at stopping medium noise. The extracting stick is too short. Overall a bad product.

easy to use, but not quite as quiet as the diposables
These are fine, but they don't block as much noise as the disposable ones. Maybe that's a plus for some people, but not for me.

Still my shooting favorites
The usual good protection for shooting & comfortable to wear. My small ears need the "post" inside so I can fully seat them to be effective. Better noise reduction IMO than big [uncomfortable] external earmuffs. And not in the way.

So easy to insert, and comfortable!
People should get these earplugs rather than any other brand or type! Really, I don't know why they do! I was introduced to this brand when I was "on the job" in noisy environments; I was perusing a catalogue of industrial safety items when I read about these. I ordered a small amount for me and my team. We were so impressed! I talked to my boss about them and soon our whole department was wearing them! They are so very easy and quick to insert. Now retired, I use them for personal use. I like personally the ones without the lanyard but when I was working I did like the lanyard ones because I could put a loop of it thru the back of my hard hat band and just pull out the ear plugs from my ears without having to put them anywhere. They go in so much more quickly than ones that you have to squish up then insert!

These Work
These ear plugs are much better than the spongy models and do nicely in eliminating high to moderate noise levels for my sleeping. They are pretty comfortable and the design works pretty well. I would make one suggestion and that is to extend, lengthen the plug so it does not get stuck in the ear from pushing them in that little extra that shuts out most all sound. I had surfers ear and my ear canal was drilled out so the canal size is a bit larger than the average ear, resulting in the occasional time when the plug got stuck and my wife used tweezers to remove. This happened much more frequently when using the sponge type of plugs that are all shorter than these plugs. So far these are the best plugs I have used and I have tried at least 11 brands of insert ear plugs for night time sleep.

Howard Leight by Honeywell Quiet Reusable Earplugs, 100 Pairs (QD1)
These work great for my purpose. I use these at night to help sleep and not be awakened by extraneous noises. I took a pair of nail clippers and took out each blue rod in the earplugs. Then I cut off a few mm of length. You have to experiment and see what works best for you. Then I put them back in the earplugs. This enables me to have extra comfort when I sleep on the sides of my face so the plastic post does not cause pain in my ear. These are the best ear plugs that I have found and I own 3 boxes of the QD1 large. You have to be careful if a man to order large because some are medium or small and do not work well. You can try 2 or 4 by ordering them on Ebay and make sure large works for you. I hope this helps some folks who need a good pair of earplugs. Regards

Easy to use earplugs and not too pricey to replace
These are great ear plugs for temporary noise reduction, but not that great for every day use (like if you're trying to block out snoring while sleeping). They aren't the most comfortable plugs on the market, but they are a good value-priced pair and do the job, so if you're just looking for something to take to a concert or something like that, these are fine. They're a little too bulky for sleeping use though.

They do the job
They do the job - I use them in cinemas when people mistake them for restaurants and it just becomes too noisy. These block the popcorn and nachos cracking sounds entirely, while still allow to hear conversation (and movie of course, quite clearly). Now, for the heavy duty, as in drilling sounds, or loud snoring - I would look for something else. It's quieter, sure, but you can hear it in the background and once it starts getting on your nerves, this is just not enough. One sidenote - the little "stick" in the middle of the plug is actually dark blue, not orange. Makes them stick out even more. They used to offer these in skin color, which I preferred.

BEST I'VE FOUND
I've used them to cancel out hearing snoring or other noise at night because I am a light sleeper otherwise who also has a hard time getting to sleep, especially with hardly any noise around me. I've been sleeping with earplugs for probably 30 plus years. Over that time I've tried many kinds. These are hands down the easiest and Most Comfortable to me. I've stayed with them for for over 20 years!

Most Reusable Ear Plugs I have found
These are the most reusable ear plugs I have found. When they get dirty you can remove the rubber cores and wash with soap and water, let dry, reassemble, and use again. They are slightly stiffer than foam plugs so they can get somewhat uncomfortable after several hours of use. This may be because my ear holes are on the smaller side, so your results may vary.I buy several pairs at a time and leave them hanging on equipment(mower, chop saw, etc) for use the next time. When they get lost or too dirty to clean I replace them.

Very comfortable and easy to insert.
The best thing I can say is I have used "Quiet Ear plugs" for over 35 years because they are comfortable and have an excellent noise reduction. I have protected my hearing in heavy industrial by purchasing these myself. So much easier to insert than roll-up foam. What's more they can be cleaned and reused. A little more expensive than rolled foam, but what is your hearing worth to you?

Thank goodness for these!
I use these every night to sleep because I am a very light sleeper. These do not block out ALL noise, however. I use them to block sounds like the ticking of the clock, car doors slamming, and my cats walking around - things like that. But it will not block out the sounds of very loud music or a loud TV playing in the room. These are much easier to use than the foam kind of earplugs. I would recommend these to anyone looking to purchase earplugs.

Wonderful noise blocker!
I've used these earplugs for years and love them! The stem makes it sooooo much easier to get them the perfect amount into your ear - put them in, wait a little for them to adjust to your ear, and then push them in a little farther if you don't have a good seal. I use them for sleeping to block out the noise of leaf blowers, nearby road or house construction, or noisy partiers at campgrounds. It blocks the sound of snoring well, too.The box includes 100 PAIRS of earplugs - I found the description on the Amazon web page confusing on this. The plugs last through many uses - I usually lose them before they wear out enough to be ineffective.
