We say plainly what a collection contains rather than what its name suggests. Power type, sealed-battery life and display are recorded as the manufacturer states them, and we keep CO, smoke and carbon dioxide firmly apart, because they are three different hazards detected by three different devices.

Home safety differs from workplace safety in a way that changes the whole frame of reference. There is no OSHA standard for your own house, no employer hazard assessment and no written program — so the governing references are NFPA 72, which sets alarm placement and maintenance practice, and the manufacturer's own listing. That makes the decisions more personal and, in one respect, more important: nobody is going to audit whether the alarm outside your bedroom still works.

Building a home safety checklist that covers the real hazards

Is a CO alarm the same as a smoke alarm?

No, and assuming otherwise is the most consequential mistake in home safety equipment. They detect entirely different things — smoke alarms sense combustion particles, CO alarms sense a gas produced by incomplete combustion — and a fire can occur with no CO present just as CO can build with no fire at all. A house needs both. Combination units exist and are a reasonable way to cover both in one device, though they tie the replacement clocks of two different sensors together. Is a carbon dioxide monitor a carbon monoxide alarm?

No — and this one is worth being blunt about, because the search terms run together. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO) are different gases. CO₂ monitors are indoor-air-quality devices that tell you a room is stuffy and ventilation is poor. CO alarms detect a poison. A CO₂ monitor will not warn you about a blocked flue or a running generator, and nothing in this collection measures CO₂. If you are worried about carbon monoxide poisoning, you need an alarm with "carbon monoxide" on it.

Where should the alarms go?

Placement follows NFPA 72 practice: an alarm on every level of the home and outside each separate sleeping area, since CO poisoning most often kills people while they are asleep. Because CO mixes fairly evenly with air rather than rising like smoke, height is less critical than proximity to sleeping areas — but follow the manufacturer's instructions, which will state minimum distances from fuel-burning appliances to avoid nuisance alarms. Do carbon monoxide alarms expire?

Yes, and this catches people out because the unit keeps chirping and testing normally. The electrochemical sensor degrades whether or not it has ever detected anything, so alarms carry an end-of-life date typically five to ten years from manufacture, after which the device must be replaced rather than serviced. What does a low-level CO monitor add?

Standard alarms are built to a listing that deliberately delays alarming at low concentrations, to avoid nuisance activations. That is sensible for most households and unhelpful for some — people with heart or respiratory conditions, pregnant women, and infants are affected at concentrations below the standard alarm threshold. A low-level monitor alerts earlier. It is not a replacement for a listed alarm; it is an addition for households that want the earlier warning.

What should I do if the alarm sounds?
